New release on Rebel Up Records: Nikanor – Bajo El Sol. Album release weekend with shows in Gent & Brussels

Nikanor – Bajo El Sol (RUP015)
releases 15 january
on vinyl, CD & digital
Chicha cumbia, cumbia Amazonica and psychedelic rock from Peru via Brussels.

Nikanor is a Peruvian band based in Brussels, fronted by vocalist Marx Sánchez Sosa and guitarist Angel Loaiza. Together they play Chicha cumbia, a unique genre based on Andean melodies blended with tropical percussion and psychedelic rock.

The first Chicha cumbia bands appeared in Peru during the mid-1960’s and was very popular until the mid-1980’s. In recent years, ‘la Chicha’ is experiencing a renaissance, with bands and audiences from around the world (re)discovering its power and sound. Taking the big names and bands from the Chicha cumbia era as a reference, Nikanor started in 2016 as a cover band, to play the most remarkable and strongest songs to gain recognition in the Belgian scene. Since then the band has evolved into a group that writes their own music and songs.

Nikanor’s songs are a mix of rock, Chicha cumbia, tropical cumbia and Andean folk. Songs like ‘La Bajada del Kuraka’, with its Afro-Peruvian rhythms, or ‘Cóndor Blanco’, with its Quenas (Andean panpipes), make this album a trip in sound into Peru. Listening to the songs you feel like flying through landscapes and rhythms from all around the country. All of this in a rock structured format that invites to dancing and partying in a live setting.

LISTEN / ORDER vinyl/ CD via Bandcamp!

Wedn 30 Oct: Rebel Up @ Combo Chimbita concert, Beursschouwburg, Bxl

This wednesday evening @ Beursschouwburg: Storytelling, psychedelic punk and cumbia-not-cumbia. The future is tropical. Live concert by Colombian band Combo Chimbita.

The mysterious Combo Chimbita combines psychedelica, folk and a strong shot of punk to create what they call ‘tropical futurism’. The four first-generation New Yorkers from Colombia take inspiration from the musical traditions of South America, the Carribean and Africa, invoking the spiritual wisdom of our global ancestors through a melding of past and future. Their performances range from the hypnotically ritualistic to the darkly danceable, with the contralto voice of high priestess/frontwoman Caolina Oliveros supported by the groovy basslines, sharp synths, smouldering guitars and ecstatic drumming of her bandmates.

Demons, Possession & Trance. Djérid desert, Sahara, Tunisia

Adorcism. Your personal DEMON possesses your BEING, and this for ALWAYS.
IFRIQIYYA ELECTRIQUE is a project apart. More than a concert, it is the true adorcist ritual of Sidi Marzûq practiced by the Banga community. Music recomposed with electric guitars, traditional instruments and computers, a transcendental and post-industrial ceremony.

OSILASI
experimental Brussels folk

Duo made up of Léa Roger (Guili Guili Gulag / Félon) and Célia Jankowski (Vitas Guerulaïtis / Flies Rattle / collective H.A.K.). Influenced as much by traditional music as by experimental music, OSILASI creates a narration with extensible contours, playing on sound dynamics, rhythmic shifts and modulation in repetition. Their music oscillates between interiority and physicality, always in tension, always on the wire. “One can refer to a fine blend of post-velvet experimentation, spiritual free jazz, French folk prog and Malinese music, but that would equally distract one’s attention from their wild beauty and imagination.” (Kraak Festival)
