Sun 22 Sept > Rebel Up Records @ Global Street Sounds, Ancienne Belgique, Bxl *FREE IN*
This sunday > AB40 KICK OFF : GLOBAL STREET SOUNDS.
This year it will be at the Anspachlaan right in front of the AB entrance with afterparty in the Club room. Free in and the Club room will be hosted by Rebel Up Records with 2 live acts and DJ’s.
with concerts by La Yegros (AR), Daniel Dzidzonu (TG/BE), SUSOBRINO (BE/BO), Nuri (TN) and Rebel Up DJ’s.
Daniel Dzidzonu
A powerful trumpet player with roots in Togo, and proud of them too: he’s been known to wear a Mobutu hat and has coined in jest the slogan ‘Make Africa Great Again’. His highly infectious Afrobeat, however, is an extremely faithful interpretation, influenced by such greats as Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela of course, Salif Keita, and Mory Kanté. He’s finally completed his first ‘full’ album which he will present. We are expecting a lot of people both in front of the stage and on it. Video and new one!
La Yegros
A thrilling blend of folktronica and ‘nu cumbia’. The Argentinean Mariana, aka Là Yegros, offers delightful, highly danceable sounds built upon cumbia, chamamé and other folk influences with an injection of electronica. Hence the term ‘folktronica’. She has recently completed work on her new CD, ‘Suelta’ (Salvation). And you’re sure to know her from her summer hit & video ‘Viene De Mi‘.

Susobrino
is the alter ego of 24-year-old producer and instrument collector Bart Van Obbergen. His Bolivian roots have inspired his passion for exotic sounds, especially traditional South American percussive music. He blends his own field recordings and other music with digital ingredients into a rhythmic and energetic soundtrack.
Nuri
released the LP ‘Drup’ in collaboration with Tunisian label Shouka: a tribute to his Tunisian heritage, with percussion and vocals from all over the African continent, and all that in a digital mix, an ‘amalgam of then and now.’ Video here.

Fri 29 March > Rebel Up Sebcat @ Rumbaristas concert, Ancienne Belgique
Rumbaristas is a crazy quartet with Spanish, French and Belgian roots. They present cheery ‘balkanorumba’ and this international explanation is included in that: ‘Rumbaristas stands for an unbalanced lively and colourful mix of Latin American flavour, with the passion of the Balkan music. A pretty senseless mix of Catalan rumba and Sicilian tarantella, spiced up with a touch of ska, folk, reggae, cumbia and even avant-garde.
DJ support from 19h onwards & after the show by Rebel Up SebCat & Miguel Menendez (Rumba Hispano Belga) in rumba sounds to southern european and latin american folk.

and in the evening, Rebel Up is supporting as dj warmup at concert night in the Ancienne Belgique.
◊ FANNA-FI-ALLAH
This seven-man company from Pakistan & Canada is celebrating the Pakistani qawwali tradition – an ancient form of Sufi religious music from Asia – such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan did in the 80s-90s. And although they have been active for 20 years, the band seems to break through this year with a wider audience.
◊ RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA & the Indo-Pak Coalition
Pitchfork recently described his style as ‘jaw-dropping’ and called him ‘one of the finest saxophonists going’. AllMusic also lauded and titled: “One of the strongest voices of the jazz scene.” His latest album ‘Agrima’ reflects ‘the vibrant presence of Indian rhythmic and melodic elements in a charged, modern improvisational framework born of the New York jazz scene’.

Sun 21 May > Rebel Up! @ Ancienne Belgique, Latin Day w/ Systema Solar (CO), La Chiva Gantiva (CO/Bxl), Orkesta Mendoza (MX) and La Negra Albina (ES/Bxl)
This sunday @ Ancienne Belgique > cumbia, mambo, rocknroll, countrytwang, champeta, etceterarara
SYSTEMA SOLAR is a crazy Colombian collective ‘from near the Caribbean’ and you might already know them from other nights & festivals? Apparently they will be bringing ‘berbenautika’ and that is then a cross between the champeta ‘pikos’ soundsystems and the ‘verbena’ parties!? Or, as they say: ‘Whatever. Party!’
LA CHIVA GANTIVA is also of Colombian origin but is known to dancing music-lovers as international, diverse, from Brussels, and even as ‘neighbour to AB’. In 2017, they finally release a 3rd album. We’re happy to repeat it too: with their extra tambore, alegre, llamador and maracones they are sure to get you back on the champeta, chirimia and mapalé!
ORKESTA MENDOZA gathers in Tucson, Arizona, and is linked to Calexico via their frontman Sergio Mendoza. Here is a phenomenally infectious mix of texmex, cumbia, mambo, merengue, ranchero, rock‘n’roll, country-twang, psychedelica & Perez Prado… The whole hot hog, wittily played with class, passion, and pleasure (and released on the brilliant Glitterbeat label!)
LA NEGRA ALBINA, our friend Paula Leon lead this group: as homebase Brussels – on the street or in parks if need be – but most definitely with Latin or Hispanic or South America roots, and what they present is quite simply extra-territorially enjoyable.
