Since 15 years, American label SUBLIME FREQUENCIES enriches the music world as a specialist in non-western music. Besides music, they also publish books, documentaries and films. Tonight they present two live artists signed on their label: Senyawa (Indonesia) and Baba Commandant (Burkina Faso), also joined by their friends Praed (Lebanon). DJ support comes from the label owner Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies and the Rebel Up dj’s.
this duo from Yogyakarta is headed by Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryardi. Indonesian traditional music forms the basis, but the duo uses playing techniques from experimental genres to create a completely unique sound. Hardcore metal, improvisation and traditional ritual music played with an intensity as if punk. Singer Shabare uses vocal traditions of the island in his singing but can also heavy metal grunting. Suryardi plays self-built instruments with names like ‘Gary’, ‘Bambu Wukir’ and ‘Aker Mahoni’. During performances, the duo uses homemade electronics to edit the sound of the vocals and instruments live. Their new album ‘Sujud’ has just been released.
Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band
from Burkina Faso and was born as Mamadou Sanou and earned his spurs as a dancer and then as a singer and musician with groups like Dounia and the accompaniment band of Burkina Faso’s greatest star: Victor Démé. Baba Commandant plays the ‘ngoni’, the traditional instrument of the Donse tribe, traditional hunters in the region of Burkina Faso and Mali. He is aided by his Mandingo band of veteran musicians of the mandinko tradition, enfused with rock. The main influences of the group are Nigerian greats Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade but also Moussa Doumbia, the Malinese response to James Brown. Check their debut album ‘Juguya’ and their afro rocker album ‘Siri Ba Kele’ has which just been released
“The band’s body of work mainly explores the terrain of Arabic popular music (“Shaabi”) and its interconnectedness with other psychedelic and hypnotic musical genres in the world, such as free jazz, space jazz, and psychedelic rock among others. Since its inception, Praed has shown a very keen interest in this music as a medium that reflects Egyptian society’s complicated fabric. Through the research it conducted, the band began to discover a strong cultural connection between “Shaabi” sounds and the “Mouled” music that is played in religious trance ceremonies. The hypnotizing psychedelic effect that was embedded in this genre also triggered thoughts around its similarity to other popular music in the world that employ forms of sonic delirium, such as free jazz and psychedelic rock.”

With 2 special guests from Lisboa, Portugal, for a night of true Afro Portuguese music styles from vintage styles to urban afro tech & beats >
Celeste Mariposa (Lisboa / PT) /
Wilson Vilares started out as techno dj but the powerful music of the African ex-Portuguese colonies lured him in and he became a true connoisseur of the Luso-African music diaspora from Angola & Cabo Verde, Guinee Bissau, Sao Tomé and further. Last year a label under the same name, releasing talented Luso-African artists living in Lisboa such as Chalo Correia, Julinho da Concertina (both in Recyclart last 2 years). Expect wild funana, funky coladeira, shaking semba, rebita and much much more!
DJ Noronha – BlackSea Não Maya crew- (Principe, Lisboa / PT)
Only 24 years old, DJ Noronha aka Fabio d’Alva Noronha is a young and talented producer / dj of the Lisbon southside Bairro da Jamaica area, across the river Tejo river. Part of the Blacksea Não Maya crew together with Dj Kolt, Dj Perigoso & Dj Joker who have released 2 LP’s already on Principe Discos. The Blacksea Não Maya sound is an urban blend of Afro Portuguese ghetto beats, spanking percussion and electronic tones, like slower funaná crossed with the rudiments of kuduro. Alien rumba for ballroom dance matinées. Puxa pa!
Rebel Up! SebCat (Bxl)
The only non-Portuguese dj on the bill as local support. Part of the Brussels global crew Rebel Up!, which needs no introduction for those who come to their underground global nights. Expect some hot warming up in Luso African spheres, from vintage sounds to modern beats.

Driven by their love for the analog sound, DJ duo Calacas explores the world of tropical grooves as cadencelypso, cumbia, guaguanco, afro disco and more. Their ultra-danceable sets leave no dance floor unmoved! Immerse yourself in a heavy sweaty trip through the Creole univers.

Time for another Rebel Up! late thursday night in Bonnefooi bar, and with 2 special guests!
DJ PANKO (Barcelona, ES)
The beatmaking DJ of the famous Spanish nu-flamenco hiphop mestizo band Ojos de Brujo, has produced many of their albums and remixes, toured the world allover. Nowadays he also works on musical projects like Lenacay and Electrorumbaiao and is quite busy spinning ethnic tunes from all over the world with loops and electronics. Expect a fine selection of flamenco, rumba, psychedelia, northern african sounds, indian spheres, colombian tropicalism and much more. Remezcla mundial! Check out all his special remixes here >
DJ KUMBIA BEATS (BO / Antwerp)
is the dj alter ego of Marco Bustamante born in Beni, Bolivia, descendant from the Quechua culture and plays all the native Bolivian folk music instruments like quena, charango, pinkillos, tarkas, zampoñas, etc. In 2010 he started his own concept about Colombian cumbia combined with electro, drums and bass, funk, Bolivian folk, global bass and rock. He’s also the leader of cumbia band ‘Los Demonios de la Cumbia’ a live group playing traditional cumbia combined with beats and synth samples by Dj Kumbia Beats. Cumbia for life!
DJ SEBCAT (Rebel Up! Bxl)
On his own tonight as LeBlanc is away on business… Bonnefooi says > This guy is one of Brussels’ most underestimated Global Groove Dj’s, with a musical network from Rajasthan to New Yorkistan and a musical selection that goes even farther and deeper into tropicalism and obscure global dance music. Sebcat is also a fulltime musical nexus, the way he blends his global grooves together in a party he also re-arranges, feeds and stimulates musical culture. Whatever you will get from him, in sound or food, it will be filled with specials spices and hotness. Caliente!
