in the evening/ night, it’s the Sublime Frequencies 15 years tour!
The Rebel Up DJ’s will be doing dj support during the evening & afterparty together with Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies.

Since 15 years, American label SUBLIME FREQUENCIES enriches the music world as a specialist in non-western music. Besides music, they also publish books, documentaries and films. Tonight they present two live artists signed on their label: Senyawa (Indonesia) and Baba Commandant (Burkina Faso), also joined by their friends Praed (Lebanon). DJ support comes from the label owner Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies and the Rebel Up dj’s.

Senwaya
this duo from Yogyakarta is headed by Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryardi. Indonesian traditional music forms the basis, but the duo uses playing techniques from experimental genres to create a completely unique sound. Hardcore metal, improvisation and traditional ritual music played with an intensity as if punk. Singer Shabare uses vocal traditions of the island in his singing but can also heavy metal grunting. Suryardi plays self-built instruments with names like ‘Gary’, ‘Bambu Wukir’ and ‘Aker Mahoni’. During performances, the duo uses homemade electronics to edit the sound of the vocals and instruments live. Their new album ‘Sujud’ has just been released.

Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band
from Burkina Faso and was born as Mamadou Sanou and earned his spurs as a dancer and then as a singer and musician with groups like Dounia and the accompaniment band of Burkina Faso’s greatest star: Victor Démé. Baba Commandant plays the ‘ngoni’, the traditional instrument of the Donse tribe, traditional hunters in the region of Burkina Faso and Mali. He is aided by his Mandingo band of veteran musicians of the mandinko tradition, enfused with rock. The main influences of the group are Nigerian greats Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade but also Moussa Doumbia, the Malinese response to James Brown. Check their debut album ‘Juguya’ and their afro rocker album ‘Siri Ba Kele’ has which just been released

Praed (Lebanon)
“The band’s body of work mainly explores the terrain of Arabic popular music (“Shaabi”) and its interconnectedness with other psychedelic and hypnotic musical genres in the world, such as free jazz, space jazz, and psychedelic rock among others. Since its inception, Praed has shown a very keen interest in this music as a medium that reflects Egyptian society’s complicated fabric. Through the research it conducted, the band began to discover a strong cultural connection between “Shaabi” sounds and the “Mouled” music that is played in religious trance ceremonies. The hypnotizing psychedelic effect that was embedded in this genre also triggered thoughts around its similarity to other popular music in the world that employ forms of sonic delirium, such as free jazz and psychedelic rock.”

Sat 29 Oct > experimental evening by Rebel Up! & Lexi Disques @ NGHE Mediatheque with Porest (US/IR), Blood Stereo (UK), City Hands (NL) & Benjamin Franklin (Bxl)

Salam!
14725767_1785415645009331_8060045096061241209_nOn Saturday 29 Oct, an experimental concert night in the NGHE mediatheque! Organised by NGHE crew, Rebel Up! & Lexi Disques.

From synthesizer sounds to global cut up music, weirdo pop and adventures in sound.

Porest (US/IR)
Mark Gergis is quite a catch; founder of the Sham Palace label, long time collaborator of Sublime Frequencies and member of disbanded Asian pop group Neung Phak. Porest is his post-globalized hate pop project, with cabalistic text-to-speech drama and violent tape music against soapbox anthems and swirling barbed-wire psychedelia that indulges in the trappings of art and politics. Listen here.
At 18h, he will show 3 short movies that he made in Syria, Cambodia and Southeast Asia, in true Sublime Frequencies style!

Blood Stereo (Brighton, UK)
The masked duo Karen Constance & Dylan Nyoukis explore hand-cranked 20th century technology in combination with epiglottal gymnastics and free music modes inherited as much from punk rock’s mutilated aesthetic as utopian art styles. Music here.

City Hands (NL)
Dutch sound artist Manuel Padding aka City Hands approach brings unexpected sounds, from calm atmospheres to trippy vibrations and even poetry. His narratives generally evoke a world where humans no longer prevail, a stream of words lurking into post-apocalyptic loneliness and colourful magic.

Benjamin Franklin (Bxl)
Casio keyboard player Benjamin Franklin puts out graceful and mysterious home-taped recordings of hypnotic melodies, sweet ballad and deviant pop. Perfect warmup sounds to gently shake body & mind.

> finishing at 22h30, so please come on time!
possibly there will some veggie food too for those who come early.

18h > 3 short films of Mark Gergis (Syria – Cambodia – Southeast Asia)
