Deejay Narciso + Nuno Beats > Rsproduções(PT / Príncipe Discos) The RS Produçoes (‘Rinchoa Stress’) collective from the Rinchoa northern Lisboa suburb was launched in 2016 by a then 17-year-old Narciso, and is made up of DJ/producer Nuno Beats, DJs Nulo and Lima, producer Farucox and MC Pimenta. Their album ‘Bagdad Style’ on Lisboa label Principe Discos last year features 8 original compositions by DJ Narciso and Nuno Beats and moves from “muscular batida” to “metallic cargaa” via “semi-tarraxos” and ravey house and kuduro jams. The crew plays regular shows at Príncipe’s monthly Noite Príncipe parties in Lisbon and will be playing in Brussels for the 1st time. Festa Afro Tuga started in 2016 by the NGHE Mediatheque and Rebel Up as a party in Brussels to celebrate Afro Portuguese music culture, with guests DJ’s from Celeste Marisposa, Principe Discos label and live artists from the Afro Portuguese diaspora. 5 epic & wild editions were held so far in various Brussels venues. This edition in the new Recyclart in Molenbeek melts together with the Nightshop concept as an Angolan special. Gente sabi, puxa!
CelesteMariposa (AO/PT / Lisboa) is a DJ from Lisbon who has been known for unconventional sets since 2010: rare vinyl pearls from the Lusophone (‘Portuguese-speaking’) African music, inspired by African ‘bailes’ from the 5 former Portuguese colonies (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, San Tomé & Principé). Most of these recordings are totally unknown in the West but afrobaile is the hot swinging cradle of any kind of groove. A powerful selection from instrumental Cape Verde funana to the raw Angolan merengue and semba, as well as gum from Guinea Bissau and Mozambique marrabenta. Diron Animal (AO/PT) Nirox Romao aka Diron Animal brings infectiously rhythmic dance music from the Angolan ghettos, fusing electronic production with traditional music. He is an ex-member of rock kuduro band Throes + The Shine where he played for several years and released his debut album ‘Alone’ in 2017 on the British Soundway label. Now his 2nd album ‘Pair’ has been released on Rebel Up Records just before summer, so his set is a true first premiere for Brussels! Lua Preta (AO/PL) Angolan/Polish duo consisting of vocalist/MC Ms. Gia of Angolan descent and experienced Polish DJ and producer Mentalcut. Together they bring the frenetic mixture of modern electronic music and African genres characteristic not only to Ms. Gia’s native Angola but also to the whole continent – including kuduro, afrohouse, gqom and more. DJ Nervoso (STP/ Lisboa) Nervoso was born in São Tomé and Príncipe, but based around Lisbon for more than 2 decades now. As the godfather of the Príncipe label, he is well known for a bare bones approach to rhythm, working the basic hypnotic feel of pounding drums to mesmerizing effect in his permanent quest to make people move. His sound is meant to unite, not divide, the dancefloor. Even before he started producing, Nervoso was quick to perceive that some people were alienated in parties where Angolan kuduro got played, for the simple reason they didn’t command the specific moves associated with the style or its variations. So his production focused on adapting the beats of this much-loved dance music, changing the codes for a more inclusive experience. Silvino Branca Trio * live funaná * (Cabo Verde/Lisboa) Born in the neighbourhood of S. Domingos (Santiago island, Cabo Verde), Silvino Branca is an important figure in modern funaná, part of the generation that inherited the sound of Codé di Dona, Sema Lopi, Julinho, Bitori or Tchota Suari. Like them, Silvino Branca is a ‘homi di gaita’ (accordion man) and fully embodies the new funaná generation raised in the ghettos of Cabo Verde, where he started playing at the tender age of 7. With the inspiration and influence of the old masters, he brings traditional funaná in its newest accelerated style: Cotxi Pó. A wild mix of shorter funaná accordion melodies with abrupt changes and more obvious hypnotism, dropping lyrics and references to times of poverty, drought and persecution experienced by the previous generation. These roots, strength and muscle have made the Cotchi Pó style extremely popular in Cabo Verde. Silvino is joined by bass guitar player Carlos da Veiga (Julinho da Concertina / Pedrinho band) and his wife Maria Das Dores Diop on ferro. CelesteMariposa (Lisboa) Wilson Vilares aka Celeste Mariposa started out in the techno scene but the powerful music of the PALOP countries lured him in and he became a true connoisseur of Luso-African music from Angola & Cabo Verde, Guinee Bissau, Sao Tomé and Lisboa. Celeste Mariposa is also a label imprint, releasing talented Luso-African artists living in the Lisboa area such as Chalo Correia and Julinho da Concertina (both played in Bxl the last few years). DJ Kolt (Lisboa/Sao Tomé / Príncipe Discos) Adjalme Noronha aka Kolt is the founding member of the Blacksea Não Maya crew from Lisboa on the other side of the Tejo river, known as Margem Sul. Together with Dj Perigoso, Dj Joker and his younger brother Noronha they have released 2 LP’s on the crunching Principe Discos label from Lisboa. The Blacksea Não Maya sound is an urban blend of Afro Portuguese ghetto beats, spanking percussion and electronic tones, like slower funaná crossed with the rudiments of kuduro, tarraxo and socopé rumba. His younger brother DJ Noronha played at our Festa Afro Tuga #2 night in 2017 and halfway his set the Brussels police stopped the party. that’s how wild it got.
