Rebel Up SebCat’s Afro Tuga ‘Hand of Timba’ mixtape

This mixtape was made by Rebel Up SebCat for Celeste Mariposa‘s radio show Radio Balanço in Lisboa (Vodafone FM) during the April lockdown, as the Festa Afro Tuga party on 10 April in Recyclart got cancelled due to the obvious. The mix is mostly filled with music from the past & present of the Afro Portuguese PALOP scene but not exclusively, with tunes from other African countries and the wider African diaspora included as well, from semba to afrohouse, kuduro, funana and more. Tracklisting can be found in the mixtape comments.

The image used is of the Hand of Timba monument at the Pidjiguiti docks in Porto de Bissau, Guiné-Bissau. The Pidjiguiti massacre was a dock worker strike that took place on 3 August 1959 in which the Portuguese colonial authorities killed about 50 people and put the blame on revolutionary party PAIGC (Partido Africano para a Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde). 3 August is now a public day of remembrance in Guinea-Bissau. Near the docks, a large black fist known as the Hand of Timba was erected as a memorial to those killed.

The current political situation in Guiné-Bissau far from good, with President Umaro Sissoco Embalo having taken power via a military coup earlier this year just before the COVID-19 crisis. Soldiers loyal to Embalo took control of national radio and public television buildings, and several public buildings including the government palace and the Palace of Justice to impose their power and ushering a new era of censorship and political oppression.

Fri 25 Oct: Nightshop Festa Afro Tuga #6: ANGOLA special @ Recyclart, Bxl

Festa Afro Tuga started in 2016 by the NGHE Mediatheque and Rebel Up as a party in Brussels to celebrate Afro Portuguese music culture, with guests DJ’s from Celeste Marisposa, Principe Discos label and live artists from the Afro Portuguese diaspora. 5 epic & wild editions were held so far in various Brussels venues. This edition in the new Recyclart in Molenbeek melts together with the Nightshop concept as an Angolan special. Gente sabi, puxa!

CelesteMariposa (AO/PT / Lisboa)
is a DJ from Lisbon who has been known for unconventional sets since 2010: rare vinyl pearls from the Lusophone (‘Portuguese-speaking’) African music, inspired by African ‘bailes’ from the 5 former Portuguese colonies (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, San Tomé & Principé). Most of these recordings are totally unknown in the West but afrobaile is the hot swinging cradle of any kind of groove. A powerful selection from instrumental Cape Verde funana to the raw Angolan merengue and semba, as well as gum from Guinea Bissau and Mozambique marrabenta. Simply irresistible.

Diron Animal (AO/PT)
Nirox Romao aka Diron Animal brings infectiously rhythmic dance music from the Angolan ghettos, fusing electronic production with traditional music. He is an ex-member of rock kuduro band Throes + The Shine where he played for several years and released his debut album ‘Alone’ in 2017 on the British Soundway label. Now his 2nd album ‘Pair’ has been released on Rebel Up Records just before summer, so his set is a true first premiere for Brussels! He will perform as a power trio, aided by percussion and guitar.

Lua Preta (AO/PL)
Angolan/Polish duo consisting of vocalist/MC Ms. Gia of Angolan descent and experienced Polish DJ and producer Mentalcut. Together they bring the frenetic mixture of modern electronic music and African genres characteristic not only to Ms. Gia’s native Angola but also to the whole continent – including kuduro, afrohouse, gqom and more. They released various EP’s and remixes in the last 2 years and are now awaiting their forthcoming EP “Polaquinha Preta”.

DJ Nervoso (STP/ Lisboa)
Nervoso was born in São Tomé and Príncipe, but based around Lisbon for more than 2 decades now. As the godfather of the Príncipe label, he is well known for a bare bones approach to rhythm, working the basic hypnotic feel of pounding drums to mesmerizing effect in his permanent quest to make people move. His sound is meant to unite, not divide, the dancefloor. Even before he started producing, Nervoso was quick to perceive that some people were alienated in parties where Angolan kuduro got played, for the simple reason they didn’t command the specific moves associated with the style or its variations. So his production focused on adapting the beats of this much-loved dance music, changing the codes for a more inclusive experience. Some call it techno.

Sat 23 June > Festa Afro Tuga #4 *Live* w/ Africa Negra & Celeste Mariposa @ Les Ecuries van de Tram, Schaarbeek

This special summer Afro Tuga *Live* edition is a concert night with a live band all the way from Sao Tomé e Principe, Conjunto África Negra, who bring Rumba, Socopé and Semba!

Africa Negra (Sao Tomé e Principe)
For over 40 years, África Negra holds the musical scepter of Sao Tome and Príncipe, an archipelago off the west coast of Central Africa. They are extremely popular in Portuguese-speaking African countries such as Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Angola and Mozambique, even in Colombia and in the Afro Portuguese diaspora around the world! Their music was a symbol of the first years of independence in 1975. They are idolised for their inimitable line of guitar based Rumba and Socopé from Sao Tome or Congolese Soukous, with also some happy notes of Highlife from Ghana. They are back, without losing their original sound of the 70s and 80s and with most of the original lineup. If you were at their incredible and wild concert last year in Muziekpublique, you know the musical fire they will bring. Puxa pa!

CelesteMariposa (Lisboa)
Wilson Vilares aka Celeste Mariposa started out in the techno scene but the powerful music of the African ex-Portuguese colonies lured him in and he became a true connoisseur of the Luso-African music diaspora from Angola & Cabo Verde, Guinee Bissau, Sao Tomé and further. Celeste Mariposa is also a label, releasing talented Luso-African artists living in the Lisboa area such as Chalo Correia and Julinho da Concertina (both played in Bxl the last 2 years). Expect wild funana, funky coladeira, electro passada, shaking semba, rebita and much more!

Brussels global crew Rebel Up! are no secret with their eclectic global nights allover town, their monthly radio show Nightshop and Kiosk Radios session. Expect some hot warming up in Luso African spheres, from vintage sounds to contemporary LX beats.

Le Grand Méchant Loop (Bxl)
Founder of the Giraffes & Penguins party, he will take us on a surprising journey, spiced up with live percussion, where the genuine sounds of ferrinho and gwoka blend to create the kind of groove that can only be explained on a dancefloor!
