Our albums of the month first take us to Africa with folk sounds from the Comores islands on Glitterbeat, southern Moroccan Amazigh blues music by Hassan Wargui (Hive Mind), Mdou Moctar’s tamashek rock album (Matador), Les Pythons de la Fournaise and their maloya & sega sounds (Catapulte) and Brussels female duo Mazima and their modern afropop children songs. Some strong jazz, afrobeat & afro cuban funk by Muito Kaballa Power Ensemble (Rebel Up) and a Jamie Branch live album in fiery jazz mood (International Anthem) In a more tropical mood with the roots-dub-cumbia by Krak In Dub (Galletas Calientes) and the compilation Club Coco selected by Coco Maria with lots of new latin artists and EP by Cameroon producer Nkom Bivoué in afrohouse and bass sounds. This saturday, Cinema Colombiano teams up with Pantropical in WORM Rotterdam, for a party finale that continues into the small hours. Los Guaqueros, aka renowned DJ’s Mario ‘Gala’ Galeano (Los Pirañas, Frente Cumbiero, Ondatrópica) and Barba Roja, will open their treasure chest of rare vinyl for a unique musical trip through Colombia.
For more than a decade, Mario ‘Gala’ Galeano has been an innovator in the prolific music scene of Bogotá and Colombia at large. The dizzying range of projects he is active in includes Frente Cumbiero’s electronically-augmented vinyl archaeology, Ondatrópica’s Caribbean-Afrocolombian mash-up, and Los Pirañas’ Cumbia-surfpunk hybrid. Together with visual artist and fellow DJ/digger Mateo Rivano, Mario takes on the shape of Los Guaqueros (literally “The Looters”) – tomb raiders who dig their way through decrepit record vaults to find the gems of Colombia’s musical roots, aiming to reintroduce its unique rhythms and styles to audiences. This saturday 21 july, Rebel Up SebCat and Duckfood will split their musical forces to divide themselves over 2 festivals.
Rebel Up SebCat will spin at Welcome To The Village festival in the far north of Friesland near Leeuwarden, together with DJ Francesco, closing off the Blessum stage from 1 to 3 am. Be ready for some hot global sounds!
During the day, great bands & performers such as Mark Lanegan, Kuenta i Tambu, Romperayo, Kanipchen Fit and Yuri Landman will play.

and the same day, Rebel Up Duckfood will go to the northern outskirts of Utrecht for De Leuke festival in de Voorveldse Polder.
You can catch him at the Yallah Yallah stage, run by our buddy DJ Tommi and also with Ramses 3000 of Caïro Liberation Front and Pushin Wood playing at another stage. Be prepared for some heavy arabic sounds, from dakbe to chobi and electro chaabi!
