Fri 28.08 > Rebel Up @ Beirut Solidarity, Sounds of a City, Recyclart, Bxl

This friday, a solidarity fundraiser event for Beirut in Recyclart.

6 Brussels DJ’s will donate their art to support the victims, NiXiE, Rebel Up SebCat, Deejay Kwak, Soumaya Phéline, DC Salas and Sara Dziri. Finally, to close gently, we will be guided by Mikhali, a young DJ from Beirut who has recently moved to Brussels.

Supporting the Remeil district which is located a couple of hundreds meters away from the harbour. This neighbourhood is the home of several major hospitals, several schools, studios of artists, a park for whom – prior to the events – the residents were fighting to save this rare green area of the town. The complicated political and economical situation makes it still hard to transfer funds to Lebanon and to identify associations clearly offering the guarantees that are required.

With the help of the team at Belgium for Lebanon – België voor Libanon – La Belgique pour le Liban, you can give your donation in confidence. This is a genuine civic work between Lebanese on location as well as the large diaspora network of the Lebanese diaspora living all around the globe.

Another way to contribute is to listen and buy Lebanese artists’ albums, via Bandcamp links (we put the link below), a great way of supporting them and discovering an outstanding music scene.

Fri 25 Oct: Nightshop Festa Afro Tuga #6: ANGOLA special @ Recyclart, Bxl

Festa Afro Tuga started in 2016 by the NGHE Mediatheque and Rebel Up as a party in Brussels to celebrate Afro Portuguese music culture, with guests DJ’s from Celeste Marisposa, Principe Discos label and live artists from the Afro Portuguese diaspora. 5 epic & wild editions were held so far in various Brussels venues. This edition in the new Recyclart in Molenbeek melts together with the Nightshop concept as an Angolan special. Gente sabi, puxa!

CelesteMariposa (AO/PT / Lisboa)
is a DJ from Lisbon who has been known for unconventional sets since 2010: rare vinyl pearls from the Lusophone (‘Portuguese-speaking’) African music, inspired by African ‘bailes’ from the 5 former Portuguese colonies (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, San Tomé & Principé). Most of these recordings are totally unknown in the West but afrobaile is the hot swinging cradle of any kind of groove. A powerful selection from instrumental Cape Verde funana to the raw Angolan merengue and semba, as well as gum from Guinea Bissau and Mozambique marrabenta. Simply irresistible.

Diron Animal (AO/PT)
Nirox Romao aka Diron Animal brings infectiously rhythmic dance music from the Angolan ghettos, fusing electronic production with traditional music. He is an ex-member of rock kuduro band Throes + The Shine where he played for several years and released his debut album ‘Alone’ in 2017 on the British Soundway label. Now his 2nd album ‘Pair’ has been released on Rebel Up Records just before summer, so his set is a true first premiere for Brussels! He will perform as a power trio, aided by percussion and guitar.

Lua Preta (AO/PL)
Angolan/Polish duo consisting of vocalist/MC Ms. Gia of Angolan descent and experienced Polish DJ and producer Mentalcut. Together they bring the frenetic mixture of modern electronic music and African genres characteristic not only to Ms. Gia’s native Angola but also to the whole continent – including kuduro, afrohouse, gqom and more. They released various EP’s and remixes in the last 2 years and are now awaiting their forthcoming EP “Polaquinha Preta”.

DJ Nervoso (STP/ Lisboa)
Nervoso was born in São Tomé and Príncipe, but based around Lisbon for more than 2 decades now. As the godfather of the Príncipe label, he is well known for a bare bones approach to rhythm, working the basic hypnotic feel of pounding drums to mesmerizing effect in his permanent quest to make people move. His sound is meant to unite, not divide, the dancefloor. Even before he started producing, Nervoso was quick to perceive that some people were alienated in parties where Angolan kuduro got played, for the simple reason they didn’t command the specific moves associated with the style or its variations. So his production focused on adapting the beats of this much-loved dance music, changing the codes for a more inclusive experience. Some call it techno.

Fri 13 Sept: Rebel Up Records evening, 10inch vinyl release Satanic Samba Trio (BR) @ Recyclart, Bxl

Satanique Samba Trio: it’s not really a trio and they don’t play samba but they are quite satanic…. this mythical Brazilian band from the capital Brasilia performs funny, pertinent and surprising sound collages, an ongoing investigation into the aesthetic deconstruction of Brazil’s most popular musical traditions.

Friday September 13th, 2019 will be remembered in Music History for the release of their new 10inch vinyl “Mais Bad”, a conceptual sequel of the 2015 release “Mó Bad”. “Mais Bad” is a new collection of low fidelity bagatelles, forged into existence by Satanique Samba Trio’s thirst for aesthetical deconstruction. All instruments in this 10-track vinyl have been recorded with the same cheap cell phone from the early 2000’s. It is meant to sound desperate, harsh and absolutely surreal. A little over the top, maybe? Yeah, but hey: that’s just how a country in crisis should look and sound like. Right?

Listen here to “Mais Bad” on our Bandcamp, and see new videoclip below, warning: graphic medical images 🙂

Friday 19 July: Rebel Up @ Recyclart Holidays with concerts Echoes Of Zoo + Cyril Cyril, Recyclart, Bxl

yes yes, Recyclart Holidays festival is back again!
in the new venue with the renovated rooms and big pavé courtyard. food, music, drinks and more.

This friday a real special night with 2 live concerts between punk jazz, psyche folk and many other outernational sounds. and a Rebel Up dj set before, between & afterparty.

Echoes Of Zoo (BE)
Belgian jazz cat quartet with a animalistic punk jazz sound. Spearheaded by Nathan Daems (Black Flower), Falk Schrauwen, Bart Vervaeck and Lieven van Pée. Sometimes beastly violent, then again erudite & delicate. The generosity of the band works radically contagious on audiences. With echoes from the Balkans, the middle east but just as much from the nervous urban context. In other words, our village fanfare, which is an ode to the hybridity of Molenbeek. Listen here.

Cyril Cyril (CH)
Ancestral sounds from the underbelly of psychedelic folk. The duo Cyril Cyril (of La Tene / Bongo Joe Records) produces sounds that make you long for a nomadic existence in unknown mountains. Armed with a banjo, guitar, drum kit and prophetic words, they take us like a phoenix to the dance floor. Listen to their album here.

Rebel Up will mix up raw punk with spiritual jazz to outernational psychedelic beauties and ethnic folklore.
