*Arabstazy*
Far from the current Ayatollah Oriental fashion, which flood us with Orientalist and post-colonial clichés, Arabstazy is the action that created its own movement. The collective was founded in 2013 by a handful of artists spread across Tunis, Paris and Berlin, they organize their independence by starting to organise their own parties and edit their tracks on their home label Shouka (*thorn* in Arabic). They establish unthinkable links between different pieces of the puzzle of the North African identity, moving smoothly to esoteric Sufi Stambeli possessions … Thus, in the hands of this young Franco-Tunisian collective the united spirit of North African trance is fully expressed.
At their parties, eclectic artists such as SKNDR, Tropikal Camel, Wetrobots N3rdistan were all part of the amazing Project Chaos made in Tunis. True to their taste for dark superstitions, Friday the 13th they will tread the soil of BXL for the first time. They are missioned by their guru Mettani 滅, producer Deena Abdelwahed, female VJ Waf and shaman Tropikal Camel, who just released his 11th album on Shouka in K7 format.

A night for musical visionaries who want to explore Arabic electronic sounds, beyond Acid Arab.

Mettani 滅
 the guru of the Arabstazy collective. His live performances are inspired by North African healing rituals, and make the link between mystical and animist possession trance. His sound is dark and organic, mixing odd polyrhythms with vibrant melodies. He invites you to explore the flip side of your soul. Coming from the noise rock scene, he uses his voice as raw material with which he sculpts his sound aided by various electronic and analogue instruments.

Deena Abdelwahed
Works hard to inject a dose of innovation and experimentation into electronic music in Tunisia. Part of the Tunisian alternative scene, she combines urban rhythms to her personal taste and brings highly energetic avant-garde music that is regarded as the future of Tunisian electronic music. In 2014, she was discovered by the collective Arabstazy and ever since she has become the prophetess.

Tropikal Camel
Born in Jerusalem and where he grew up, Roi Assayag has lived in Berlin since 2013. His new project is the musical exploration of his own Arab roots. From Kurdistan to Iraq, passing through Morocco, he takes us on the journey of conscience, through the limbo of his fragmented identity. Performer and MC extraordinary, his live sets are an experience that will leave you deeply transformed.

Wafa Benromdhan aka VJ WAF
Uses videos and photos to embody her thoughts, emotions and to translate questions. Driven by a desire to treat the idleness of sensible beings to create chronic heterotopias at her disposal, she gradually opens a creative future that puts the scenography at the center of her research. The visual soul of Arabstazy since its creation, she is also part of other projects such as Wafolyv and Planningtorock.

Rebel Up! DJ’s
resident DJ’s of the Nightshop parties. Tonite they will explore the past & future of the Northern African & Arab world in full sound, warming up & closing down.

On Friday 17th Rebel Up! helps organising a very special night at Recyclart during the always amazing Holidays festival.
as the title says > Puxa: Luso African Dance Night stands for a night filled with African dance music from the Lusophone countries such as Angola and Cabo Verde with styles like Semba, Funaná and more. Expect some serious tropical sounds impossible not to dance to.

‘Puxa’ means ‘pull’ in Portuguese (and not ‘push’ as would seem logical) and is used as a musical shout to pull your dance partner closer to you. Be ready to hear Puxa! night long!

Live concerts by Chalo Correia and Band from Angola via Lisboa, Tabanka from Cabo Verde via Rotterdam and the Celeste Mariposa dj’s from Lisboa.

Chalo Correia is Gonçalves António Correia, an Angolan musician and singer who grew up with Semba music in his blood. Chalo was born in Luanda, the capital of Angola, in 1968. During his boyhood he was fortunate to encounter musicians from revolutionary semba bands like Os Merengues, and Os Kiezos. He moved to Lisboa, Portugal in the beginning of the 90s and started to learn the classical guitar on autodidact and academic level with a strong will to make it by playing vintage Angolan music. His debut album ‘Kudihohola’ has just been released in June by Celeste/Mariposa Discos and is testimony to the development of his remarkable vision on Angolan music. Chalo Correia as a band retains the explosive, organic sounds of Semba and Rebita, but also remains in touch with the modern urban afro music scene in Lisbon. Semba is the swinging afro style from Angola, it comes from the word Masemba, which means ‘belly bumping’, a reference to some serious tight dancing. It’s the original base for styles like Brazilian Samba, Kizomba, Rebita, Kazukuta and it inspired the birth of urban Kuduro sound. Check his new video below for that sweet Semba sound.

Tabanka is a 7 piece Cabo Verdian band from Rotterdam, playing the fast swinging funaná music, thé dance sound of Cabo Verde. Their delirious funaná is ruled by the diatonic accordeon (gaita) and the ferrinho (metal stick) for some scraping rhythms and changing speeds. The group got its inspiration by generational musicians such as Bulimundo and Américo Brito but with their own modern interpretation and sound. Check it out! >

The Celeste / Mariposa dj duo run the famous Afro-Baile dance nights in Lisboa where they bring the Lusophone music culture together in sound. Their research is all about music from the former African Portuguese colonies; Angola, Kaapverdië, Guinee Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tomé & Principé, digging up old vinyls on markets and visiting studio’s in Lisboa. They just started their own label Celeste Mariposa Disco’s on which they released Chalo Correia and for sure more Luso African releases will follow! This friday 20 Feb, another wild Nightshop party at Recyclart!

with special live guests Gato Preto, a Mozambican – Ghanaian/German duo of producer Lee Bass & Gata Misterioso who bring kuduro beats with live female MC-ing. Both artist having roots in Africa,their raw yet complex bass is influenced by a broad palette of African musical styles. Wild!

also DJ Khalab will do a special dj set – Afro future beat shake. An ongoing round trip journey between tribes and psyche, desert and spaceships, jungle and skyscrapers. and Flore, tropical bass with complex rhythms and bewitching basslines.

and ofcourse your local rebelious Rebel Up! dj’s will warm up the crowd for the first bit….

A very special cumbia Nightshop party in Recyclart on Friday 28 march!
with special guests Dengue Dengue Dengue all the way from the cumbia hotbed that is Lima, Peru, one of the hottest digital cumbia producers of the moment, expect lots of modern colours of cumbia and some psychedelic electro elements.

another special guest is Captain Cumbia of the notorious cumbia in Paris at the La Dame de la Canton boat, who is a producer, remixer and skilled dj of all sounds latin. he’ll bring a special guest to play live instruments (trumpet & more) alongside with him for his 2nd set

support by yours truly Rebel Up! Soundclash dj’s with a serious Peruvian twist since SebCat will just have returned 4 hours before the party from a musical holiday in Peru! also closing off is dj Mellow of the Low Up crew with some serious bass.

1st Rebel Up Nightshop radio show *emission 0*

Yo folks,

Our very first radio show session, “emission 0” on Radio Campus Bxl, broadcasted on 11th of january and to be repeated several times during the month. The show was actually recorded in late august and we had to wait a while before it was accepted into the Campus programme schedule. We kick off with 2 songs, followed by a label focus about the Sahel Sounds label that mostly releases current folk & electronic music from the sub Saharan region. Then we played our albums of the month, which were Hailu Mergia (on Awesome Tapes From Africa) and Grand Kallé & l’Orchestre Jazz (on Planet Ilunga), followed by a global style focus on Pandza music from the south of Mozambique, a new electronic Marrabenta Shangaan style. In the nightshop segment we interview local Afghani shop owner Raza Wasiq of the Economat shop on Av Stalingrad and he chooses 2 ‘Hazzari’ songs to play. NIGHTSHOP PARTY !MERIDIAN BROTHERS, straight from Colombia, are ready to bring their mischievous blend of Latin rhythms and psychedelic grooves to Belgium for the first time. Straddling the line between new and old, this quintet is the creation of Eblis Álvarez, one of the key figures of the experimental music scene in Bogota. A true avant-garde guitar player and composer he also plays in Mario Galeano’s band Frente Cumbiero and was involved in the recording of Ondatrópica. In September 2012 Soundway Records released his album ‘Desperanza’ that features ‘Guaracha U.F.O’, recently selected by Gilles Peterson as his #1 track of 2012.

HUGO MENDEZ‘ dj style is a unique blend of African, Caribbean and Latin rhythms – a percussive explosion that includes heavy Afro grooves, old school mambo, tropical disco, bouncing samba, calypso funk and heavy cumbia, bringing vintage styles up to date with exclusive dubplate edits and a contemporary club slant.
After some digging trips across the Caribbean, he has put together several top albums for leading record labels, like Strut, Jazzman, Soundway and Nascente. Hugo also produces the cult Rhythmagic Orchestra project with Nostalgia 77, runs the Sofrito Specials label and makes the tropical selections for 22Tracks in Paris.

Hey all,

Happy new 2010!
and yes, after A’dam & Utrecht, we’re also gonna start focussing on Brussels in 2010, and what more may come from it in Belgium or beyond!

This night will moreless be the start of our bimonthly nights in Brussels (Sat. 16th of april will be our first Rebel Up! party @ Recyclart)

Perhaps slightly different than our not-so-average Rebel Up! nights, this Climate Jockey night will be very heavy on global bass spheres. As we are starting the night with first sounds, we’ll do our best to heat up the floor with some tropical, sensual, tickling tunes from allover the globe.

We’re really proud to again play with our friend Hugo Douster from Lyon, who played with us in Utrecht last year. He sure will butter & fire up the dancefloor with his special style of tropical-rootsical bass selections, electronic body music with a tropical virus! His good friend Baxter Beez will play a similar crash course in bassheavy styles from the tropics. Further into the night, locally famed Brussels partycrasher DJ Lowdjo will spin his eclectic selections from everywhere.
