After 10 albums dedicated to the aesthetical disassembling of Brazilian music’s most recurrent clichés, Satanique Samba Trio aims its ongoing research at a new formula for musical fuckery: the artificial combination between forró, the popular Brazilian groovy rhythm and horror synth, the not-so-popular music genre extracted from old keyboard-ridden horror film scores.
Think of what would happen if the most syncopated of all Brazilian folk rhythms incorporated a bunch of obsolete-but-nowadays-trendy giallo soundtrack tropes. Mathematically speaking, forró + horror synth = forrór synth. And that is where Forrível is coming from.
Well, enough of homework. It’s Halloween once again (or Dia das Bruxas – Witches Day, as it’s called in Brazil) – and it’s raining in Brazil. As we are slowly descending into a renewed global lockdown, here some soundtrack sounds for these dark times.
Last tuesday we had our Rebel Up show at BRUZZ radio. We did our 1st ever live video show with special guest Murat Ertel of Turkish psychedelic band BaBa ZuLa, interviewing him about life in lockdown times and their new live album ‘Hayvan Gibi‘.
Look at the video show or listen to the show on Mixcloud below, with full tracklisting.
This month’s Rebel Up Nightshop show (April 2020, via Radio Campus Bruxelles) is done in quarantine, home recorded as a big 2 hour mixtape with 10(!) albums of the month. Look out for some current candid COVID19 spoken word soundbites throughout the show as awareness or social political counteraction.
Starting with a psychedelic oriental tune by Baharat on Batov Records and followed by the new Ethiofunk-meets-dub album ‘Yene Mircha’ by Hailu Mergia on Awesome Tapes From Africa. After this, Argentinian outsider band Los Siquicos Literalenos and their experimental chamame folk sound out on Hive Mind Records and followed by the reissue of Peruvian Amazonian cumbia band Ranil Y Su Conjunto on Analog Africa, rare recordings from the 1970’s. We travel to Turkey via German Turkish migrant communities on the Uzelli Electro Saz compilation with psychedelic folk from 70’s & 80’s and followed by contemporary northern Greek folk music album by Evritiki Zygia on Teranga Beat label. Then we travel to Morocco, to the Master Musicians of Jajouka & Bachir Attar reissue on vinyl by Zehra label from a 1991 recording and we travel up into the Iberian peninsula for the compilation Codex Futura Vol.1 on Samain Music digital label with contemporary electronic folk music from Spain & Portugal. El Buho brings his new electronic latino album ‘Ramas’ on Wonderwheel label and we end the show in oriental electronic rave sounds via French duo Ko Shin Moon (‘Leila Nova’) on Akuphone and Palestinian duo Zenobia (‘Halak Halak’) on Crammed Discs. Echoes Of Zoo (BE) Belgian jazz cat quartet with a animalistic punk jazz sound. Spearheaded by Nathan Daems (Black Flower), Falk Schrauwen, Bart Vervaeck and Lieven van Pée. Sometimes beastly violent, then again erudite & delicate. The generosity of the band works radically contagious on audiences. With echoes from the Balkans, the middle east but just as much from the nervous urban context. In other words, our village fanfare, which is an ode to the hybridity of Molenbeek. Listen here.
Cyril Cyril(CH) Ancestral sounds from the underbelly of psychedelic folk. The duo Cyril Cyril (of La Tene / Bongo Joe Records) produces sounds that make you long for a nomadic existence in unknown mountains. Armed with a banjo, guitar, drum kit and prophetic words, they take us like a phoenix to the dance floor. Listen to their album here.
Rebel Up will mix up raw punk with spiritual jazz to outernational psychedelic beauties and ethnic folklore.
