another special Rebel Up! Soundclash night at Bonnefooi and this time we go to the eastern mediterranean for some arabic spheres!

with special guest Tropikal Camel (ISR / Berlin)
Hailing from Jerusalem, currently living in Berlin, the grandson of Jewish immigrants from Morocco, Austria, Iraq and Kurdistan and growing up with hearing hebrew, arabic, french and german around him, Roi ‘Rocky’ Asayag is a true mix of Jewish and Arab bloodlines. His Tropikal Camel project is a musical mirror of a seminal journey into his Arabic roots. Soul-searching through his intricate identity, he takes us from Kurdistan and Iraq to Morocco. This is how Tropikal Camel is born; an Arab Jew chasing the lost connection to his Arab culture. Dressed in a Moroccon Kaftan cloak, he becomes a witch doctor, a master of ceremony of a musical journey that tries to raise questions and purify the spirit. His vibrant sound is a maze of dense arabic spheres from the past and present, heavy dancehall bass and tropical electro.

Fri 24 April > Rebel Up! Soundclash & Miaaauw Soundz present; The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band @ OCCII, Amsterdam

11079603_814874351941334_6586580183288662524_n(1)

The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band
The band plays vintage molam music from Isan, in the North-East of Thailand, with a 21st century twist. Featuring Kammao Perdtanon on phin (Thai lute), Sawai Kaewsombat on khaen, a type of bamboo harmonica, and backed by Piyanart Jotikasthira on bass, Phusana Treeburut on drums and Chris Menist on percussion the band have just completed a successful 2nd tour of Europe. Whilst based on the traditional molam sounds of Isan, the band also draw out the trance-like qualities of the music be it the repeated motifs of ‘Sao Sa Kit Mae’ lead by Sawai’s ethereal khaen, or the driving grooves of ‘Lam San Disco’ where Kammao’s psyched out phin comes to the fore. Rooted in tradition yet with an eye to the future, The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band have already made waves on the live stage, and their first studio recording very much continues in the same vein. Chris Menist and Maft Sai are also behind the highly acclaimed ‘The Sound of Siam’ compilations on Soundway Records, as well as releases for Finders Keepers, Light In The Attic and their own Paradise Bangkok label.

Fri 17 april, LAST Rebel Up! Soundclash @ De Vinger, Den Haag

11080354_1050914624924763_2440311213206040541_o

Hi Up! Everyone,

Sadly, this is our LAST EVER party night at De Vinger, as it soon will be closed and demolished, what a shame 🙁

We will be joined by our new Rebel Up! member DJ DUCKFOOD who will Heat Up the dancefloor for you to freely run, jive, and just dance for the hell of it. As usual, expect a fine Rebel Up! mix of old and gritty tunes with newer weirder than ever music from all around the globe: Calypso, Soukouss, Cumbia, Desert tunes and other genres in the making.

The entrance fee should be 3€ but it can also be more if you feel like helping out this bar De Vinger which as always intended to be just an open stage for young and less young local and international artists. Just providing what has become a rarity in Den Haag : a venue for alternative music.

Hope then to see you there one last time!

Sat 6 Dec > polyrhythmic dance night @ Salle Rogier Bxl Rebel Up! djs w/ Durian Brothers, High Wolf, Tav Exotic, Pizza Noise Mafia & Fyoelk

10440881_880215235352040_3206224592314889716_n
a long party night at Salle Rogier with experimental dance music, abstract techno, polyrhythmic, crooked acid etc.

THE DURIAN BROTHERS (DE)
//////polyrhythmic bounce loops \\\\\\
After their much welcomed live appearance at this year’s Petit Fays Festival, The Durian Brothers finally make it to Brussels! Assembled around the SALON DES AMATEURS club (Düsseldorf) a few years ago, playing prepared turntables, a sequencer and an array of effects, the trio blend polyrhythmic, Afro-beat inspired percussion with noise-saturated aspects of electronic minimalism. Dense and dance-oriented, this is music made for the live club setting, immediate and intense, but flows with an artistic and purposeful bent. After three EPs on Diskant, a split EP with Ensemble Skalectrik (an Ekoplekz side project) on FatCat Records, and a first Mini-LP “DAS MACHT MODERN” on swedish Kontra-Musik just recently, its time for a live-show, that ranges from click&cutting woody trance to dub-filled frenzy without missing a beat.

TAV EXOTIC (VZ/BE)
MIKEY “WEIRD DUST” CRABBé
ERNIE “BEAR BONES, LAY LOW” GONZáLEZ
//////Synth drenched acid mayhem with a noisy sauce \\\\\\

PIZZA NOISE MAFIA (FR/BE)
//////Funky minimal 6-step\\\\\\
An electronic duo composed of TG Gondard and Carrageenan. Their music is a cold and minimal funk, rhythmed by catchy acid analog modulations. A demonic war machine that will drench the most demanding dancefloors in sweat! This night will see the release of their first LP ‘i canti della malavita’ on the Slaaploos label!

FYOELK (DE) reveals the adventures by two legs of freeform acidic beat duo Laser Poodle, residing in Antwerp. His sound explorations have recently returned to the track format, utilizing MIDI technology. Driven by a love for the foundations of house music, polymorphous synth sequences and tribal percussion blend into sonic wormholes. Fyoelk runs the tape label Stenze Quo.

HIGH WOLF (FR) possesses a natural-born ability to zero in on the tones most conducive to inducing transcendental states. He will play a special live set of outerwordly psychedelic buzz beats with a rigid afro guitar vibe. Be there early to indulge yourselves into this!

Fri 21 Nov > Rebel Up! @ Le Guess Who Festival in RASA, Utrecht w/ Ogoya Nengo & Dodo Women’s Group (KY) + uKanDanZ (FR/ET)

This friday playing at Le Guess Who? festival in RASA world music venue, check their fingerlicking good lineup, just awesome and many of our friends playing too!
logo

Ogoya Nengo will do one of her first performances outside of Kenya. Born in the 1930s in a small village at the shores of Lake Victoria, she soon joined the socially critical Dodo singers, a genre and community which is in danger of vanishing. Ogoya became the rave of her time, singing to great chiefs, warriors and even colonial officers and missionaries. Despite Ogoya being a legendary Kenyan folk artist with a career spanning over three decades little people outside Kenya have had the chance of ever hearing her and her ensemble.

Inspired by traditional Ethiopian songs, uKanDanZ is an explosive musical hybrid of styles which, as the name suggests, are made to dance to. With guitar, bass, drums and tenor sax they occupy a vibrant place somewhere between rock, improvised jazz, noise and Ethiogroove. Front and centre is charismatic vocalist Asnake Guebreyes from Addis Abeba, chanting Ethiopian soul melodies that transcends the highly energetic music to unheard places. They deliberately cross all traditional musical borders, creating something new and unique while at the same time staying true to the origins of the genres they magically melt into one.

as always our Rebel Up! sounds will be in African, Latino, Caribbean, Arabic and Asian global spheres, tripping around the world in unknown sounds to make you bounce.
