This saturday, Giraffes & Penguins and HAPE collective are joining forces for a night of underground african, caribbean and hip-shaking dancehall vibes with legendary DJ/producer Poirier (CA), Rebel Up, Le Grand Mechant Loop, Tropical DJipsies and Doctor Pepper (JM/BE)!
with special guest Poirier (Montreal, Canada)
Specializing in warm electronic music, Poirier is a prolific, creative and eclectic Canadian producer/musician/DJ. Constant in his albums and performances is a desire to build bridges between different languages, communities, and cultures. Active in Montreal, his successful monthly dance party Qualité de Luxe is dedicated to African and Caribbean music, attracting capacity crowds for over five years. Poirier is also the man behind Bounce le Gros and Karnival, parties with legendary status in Montreal nightlife history. He produced a total of 10 albums and many EPs with labels such as Wonderwheel Recordings and Ninja Tune. In 2017, he followed up with “Be Alright”, an EP inspired by Afro house music and featuring a collaboration with the Mozambican-Canadian singer Samito on the anthem “Sowia”. 2019 will see the release of several new songs inspired by Poirier’s travels abroad and his beloved city of Montreal.

Thu 30 May: Nihiloxica drum & dance workshop @ Collectif Au Quai + afterparty @ Café Midpoint, Bxl
Ugandan band Nihiloxica (Nyege Tapes) is back in Brussels after their show at Les Nuits Botanique earlier this month and they will show you the essence of what we do and demonstrate how to get down and dance to it Ugandan style. They will be taking you on a cultural journey from Buganda through all the kingdoms from which they draw their rhythms.
the drum & dance workshop includes:
– Learning of traditional rhythms through both drumming and dancing.
– Playing on our Bugandan drum set.
– Learning techniques of playing hand percussion instruments.
– Q&A and traditional performance from the band.

It’s open doors at the CityGate the whole weekend, free in and lots going on, from BBQ to open studios, expo, workshops, live painting to performances, and also live sessions by the Berlin & Israel based freejazz group Spiritczualic Enhancement Center, Daniel Dzidzonu and many deejays. Rebel Up will play a 1,5 hour global dj set from 23h til 0h30.

A weird-looking caravan is progressing slowly through the desert. The Bedu-Penguins are approaching, followed by dozens of robot giraffes carrying their massive soundsystem. They travel from town to town to spread traditional and futuristic arabic sounds, night after night after night… Soon they will reach their next destination – a wild oasis called Au Quai.

Producer/DJ Gan Gah is set to cause a storm on the music scene
with his melting pot fusion of Electronic music and North-African vibes accompanied by rhythmic beats. Gan Gah edges more into Gnawa and Berbers territory with his music like you’ve never heard before, hypnotising his audiences with dancing spells and creating a movement that no other producer has yet to make. The Moroccan born producer is bringing his childhood Agadir roots into Brussels with his memorable sets, effortlessly gathering unity and culture together through his music. In 2015 he released an album dubbed ‘Souktronics.’ The following year was a big one for Gan Gah as he dropped two albums, ‘Moroccan Affair Remixed’ Featuring Jabo, and ‘Chaâbitronics.’ Gan Gah has performed at Dour festival, Sfinks Mixed Festival and the infamous ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event). Xavier Riembau aka Diego Armando is a dj from Barcelona playing an eclectic mix of groovy tunes from around the world.
A 24 h digger moving from Jamaica To Cuba across New Orleans and back to Gypsy rumba Barcelona. His specialty is dancefloor killers from the afroamerican music, exotic themes from Brasil to Africa, & also Disco & Acid house anthems. A true visceral dj who plays vinyls since 20 years active in Barcelona & Catalunya. His name is an hommage to the best football player of the planet aka Diego Armando aka La Mano de Dios. Mani (bass player from Stone Roses /Primal Scream) gave him this name after a big party in La Costa Brava. He played festivals like Sónar, Faraday, Rock Circus (Italy), Mostra Sonora i Visual & venues like Razzmatazz (BCN) and Sala Apolo (BCN). He also opened for The Streets, Ike Turner, Mdou Moctar, Mammane Sani, KIng Ayisoba or Maceo Parker to name a few. He is part of the Finis Africae collective and also has an experimental & ethnological project called Wunderkammer with Enrique Doza a venezuelan artist. A clash between roots & electronic music.
