Hussein Rassim is a young Iraqi musician and player of the oud (Eastern lute), who studied at Iraq’s best music schools. Hussein is also a member of the bands Solo Baghdad, Arumbo and Nawaris. He has recorded an album titled Amerli with Refugees for Refugees, and Migration with Nawaris.

Sunn Trio hail from Phoenix, Arizona. Surrounded by deserts like the Middle Eastern guitar music that is one of the notable influences on their sound, along with free jazz and harsh exotica and touchstones as disparate as Sonny Sharrock ,John McLaughlin, Sir Richard Bishop and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. Sunn Trio’s Fayrus album on the Unrock label last year is a kaleidoscope for the ears featuring sax, saron, gong, boning, lap steel, tambura, oud lute and even a Gameboy, echoing from behind a curtain of bitter haze and sun-beaten punk. In the words of Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls), “Wielding Indo-Arabian Saz & white lightning six-string shrapnel amidst an alligator snapping turtle’s rhythm section, this trio-quartet-sextet may also sprout horns, flutes, animal skins, or shadow gamelan to faithfully demolish that whiny and predictable listening experience of today’s tepidly lazy, underachieving experimental music scene. Not a “safe” environment.”

This friday, Rebel Up & Friends evening at Cafe Maison du Peuple in St Gilles.

with special guests: Tropical DJipsies. They united their feminine forces just before the International Women’s Rights Day. This mysterious female quartet has members from various countries and are part of the Brussels global underground attached to local crews like Giraffes & Penguins, Rebel Up and MEDEX. Global dancefloor sounds from all corners of the world, from feminist to activist songs and just pure global beat bangers, attached to their own southern roots and backgrounds as well as sounds from other continents.

This sunday > AB40 KICK OFF : GLOBAL STREET SOUNDS.
This year it will be at the Anspachlaan right in front of the AB entrance with afterparty in the Club room. Free in and the Club room will be hosted by Rebel Up Records with 2 live acts and DJ’s.

with concerts by La Yegros (AR), Daniel Dzidzonu (TG/BE), SUSOBRINO (BE/BO), Nuri (TN) and Rebel Up DJ’s.

Daniel Dzidzonu
A powerful trumpet player with roots in Togo, and proud of them too: he’s been known to wear a Mobutu hat and has coined in jest the slogan ‘Make Africa Great Again’. His highly infectious Afrobeat, however, is an extremely faithful interpretation, influenced by such greats as Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela of course, Salif Keita, and Mory KantĂ©. He’s finally completed his first ‘full’ album which he will present. We are expecting a lot of people both in front of the stage and on it. Video and new one!

La Yegros
A thrilling blend of folktronica and ‘nu cumbia’. The Argentinean Mariana, aka LĂ  Yegros, offers delightful, highly danceable sounds built upon cumbia, chamamĂ© and other folk influences with an injection of electronica. Hence the term ‘folktronica’. She has recently completed work on her new CD, ‘Suelta’ (Salvation). And you’re sure to know her from her summer hit & video ‘Viene De Mi‘.

Susobrino
is the alter ego of 24-year-old producer and instrument collector Bart Van Obbergen. His Bolivian roots have inspired his passion for exotic sounds, especially traditional South American percussive music. He blends his own field recordings and other music with digital ingredients into a rhythmic and energetic soundtrack.

Nuri
released the LP ‘Drup’ in collaboration with Tunisian label Shouka: a tribute to his Tunisian heritage, with percussion and vocals from all over the African continent, and all that in a digital mix, an ‘amalgam of then and now.’ Video here.
