This saturday, Giraffes & Penguins and HAPE collective are joining forces for a night of underground african, caribbean and hip-shaking dancehall vibes with legendary DJ/producer Poirier (CA), Rebel Up, Le Grand Mechant Loop, Tropical DJipsies and Doctor Pepper (JM/BE)!
with special guest Poirier (Montreal, Canada) Specializing in warm electronic music, Poirier is a prolific, creative and eclectic Canadian producer/musician/DJ. Constant in his albums and performances is a desire to build bridges between different languages, communities, and cultures. Active in Montreal, his successful monthly dance party Qualité de Luxe is dedicated to African and Caribbean music, attracting capacity crowds for over five years. Poirier is also the man behind Bounce le Gros and Karnival, parties with legendary status in Montreal nightlife history. He produced a total of 10 albums and many EPs with labels such as Wonderwheel Recordings and Ninja Tune. In 2017, he followed up with “Be Alright”, an EP inspired by Afro house music and featuring a collaboration with the Mozambican-Canadian singer Samito on the anthem “Sowia”. 2019 will see the release of several new songs inspired by Poirier’s travels abroad and his beloved city of Montreal.

Ugandan band Nihiloxica (Nyege Tapes) is back in Brussels after their show at Les Nuits Botanique earlier this month and they will show you the essence of what we do and demonstrate how to get down and dance to it Ugandan style. They will be taking you on a cultural journey from Buganda through all the kingdoms from which they draw their rhythms.
the drum & dance workshop includes: – Learning of traditional rhythms through both drumming and dancing. – Playing on our Bugandan drum set. – Learning techniques of playing hand percussion instruments. – Q&A and traditional performance from the band.

Starting at the Studio CityGate > It’s open doors at the CityGate the whole weekend, free in and lots going on, from BBQ to open studios, expo, workshops, live painting to performances, and also live sessions by the Berlin & Israel based freejazz group Spiritczualic Enhancement Center, Daniel Dzidzonu and many deejays. Rebel Up will play a 1,5 hour global dj set from 23h til 0h30.

Afterwards Rebel Up SebCat will go & spin at the Yoppeleyeppe fundraiser party in Collectif Au Quai. Fundraiser for the yearly social camp & festival Borgofuturo in Italy. During the party we will present “Borgofuturo Social Camp #3”, a 3 days gathering made of debates, workshops and live shows where people can meet, share ideas and imagine a more sustainable society.

Nickodemus (US) & DJ BUOSIS (IT) presenting the album “Pulo NDJ – Desert to Douala” (Wonderwheel Recordings) Nickodemus can be easily called one of the ‘world beat’ pioneers, ever since he started organising the “Turntables on the Hudson” parties in New York in the late 90s. Early 2000 he started producing and set up his own label, Wonderwheel Recordings, to release his music and that of like minded producers (Zeb, The Spy from Cairo…), mixing hip hop, funk and house with African, Latin, Brasilian, Arab and Balkan flavours. By signing a new wave of global artists like Chancha Via Circuito, Populous, Thornato, Tremor and Alsarah & The Nubatones, his label stays on top of the international scene. Invited by the international Hape Collective, he went to Chad to work on a new album with local talented musicians, which resulted in the ecletic-versatile album “Pulo NDJ – Desert to Douala”, a fusion of afrobeat, hip hop, electro and traditional rhythms and instruments, to be released March 29 on Wonderwheel. In her sets, she blends sounds from various eras and areas, ranging from experimental, ethnical and underground music to dancefloor hits or even more poppy music – all of this depending on her mood, the context, place, public and the things she’s been listening to in that specific phase of her life.
