Fri 7 June: Rebel Up @ Sakili concert afterparty, Muziekpublique, Bxl

This friday, concert of trio Sakili, acoutstic sega & tambour music from the Indian ocean!

Sakili’s music reflects the history of Rodrigues Island, combining European and African influences: waltz, polka, mazurka, schottische, they all blend harmoniously to the rhythms of sega drumming, traditional from the times of African slaves. Moreover, as globalization also influences the vast expanses of the Indian Ocean, there are of course, in some of the songs, elements of overlap with the western world or more recent preoccupations.

The Creole sega is sensual music and dance, with African influences, which was, in origin, a cultural form of resistance by slaves against the colonial rulers, but the culture turned little by little into a ritual that has in the end become rooted in tradition and lastingly incorporated in the way of life. The style of performance, sega drumming, is a vibrant mixture of music, consisting mainly of percussion, sin or status.

The Trio Sakili comprises three major ambassadors of Rodrigues sega: Vallen Pierre Louis is a banjoist well known and highly appreciated on the island. Francis Prosper belongs to one of the most important musical clans of the island and is without any doubt the best traditional percussionist and provides, with his warm timbre, the powerful voice of Sakili. Third in the line-up, Ricardo Legentile plays the accordion, the leading local melodic instrument, a heritage of the multiple influences on the island. The repertoire and the subtleties of his playing technique have been handed down from father to son for several generations of the family, while his mother, Yolande Legentile, belongs to the famous singers, the Mareshals of Sega in Rodrigues.

Afterparty in foyer by Rebel Up SebCat & Drache Musicale. Also stand by NGHE Mediatheque with special cassettes between maloya and sega.

Tue 5 March > Rebel Up support @ Kokoko! concert, Het Bos, Antwerpen

this tuesday 5 march, a special concert of KOKOKO! in Het Bos, the best underground venue in Antwerp or even Flanders!

Rebel Up SebCat takes care of the support in Afro spheres via vinyl to the newest digital tunes.

KOKOKO! is a collective born in Kinshasa, a creative collision of different artists which fused at a block party. The collective consists of musical instrument inventors from the Ngwaka neighbourhood, electronic producer débruit, Makara Bianko (aka the Lingwala devil) and his dancers bursting forth from the Lingwala neighbourhood.

They’re best known for creating a contemporary aesthetic all their own by re-wiring and up-cycling materials such as metal, cans, engine parts and plastic containers found in Kinshasa’s streets into vital sculptural resonant dance music. Their distorted fast rhythms and spontaneous lo-fi electric sounds provide the chaotic soundtrack for the city’s harsh yet abundantly creative realities. It’s a brand new scene – radical, dangerous and thriving in a country whose political instability is felt first and most urgently on the streets of Kinshasa, an urban patchwork stretching further than the eye can see in Africa’s 3rd largest capital city. KOKOKO! is the spectacular sonic backdrop, the new, no holds barred aesthetic emanating from the downtown clubs (in between the government-imposed power cuts).

Sadly the concert is already SOLD OUT for some weeks now, but check the FB event to see if there are some tickets flowing around.

Fri 1 March > Rebel Up Soundclash *Sahel special* with Studio Shap Shap (NE) & Pal/Secam @ OCCII, Amsterdam

Sounds from the Global Underground | Sahel Special

Another special Rebel Up Soundclash night in the OCCII, where we invite the band Studio Shap Shap for their only NL show this tour. Not to be missed!

Studio Shap Shap started off in 2015 as a project that was inspired by a new radio station in Niamey, which was searching for local musicians who could create 27 songs in three days for its broadcast programme. Studio Shap Shap are Oumarou Adamou (Niger), Boubacar Siddo Diallo (Niger), Seyni Halidou (Niger), Haruna Abdou (Niger), Christian Koulnodji (Chad) and Laetitia Cecile (Reunion). The six-piece ensemble is known for fusing traditional and contemporary beats, inspired by nature, the communities they live in and the band members’ musical backgrounds. Mixing nature and city, traditional and electronic techniques, spoken word and vocals magnify the traditional instruments. Ancient knowledge to rely on and beyond modernity for a true contemporary African sound. Despite the challenges, the group managed to independently release their debut album ‘Chateau I’, which was recorded outside and under a hut and with the sound of birds and city noise around them. They have grown a lot since their first album and have been busy recording new songs. This is their only show in Netherlands. Travel with them into the modern sound of the Sahel!

in the evening/ night, it’s the Sublime Frequencies 15 years tour!
The Rebel Up DJ’s will be doing dj support during the evening & afterparty together with Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies.

Since 15 years, American label SUBLIME FREQUENCIES enriches the music world as a specialist in non-western music. Besides music, they also publish books, documentaries and films. Tonight they present two live artists signed on their label: Senyawa (Indonesia) and Baba Commandant (Burkina Faso), also joined by their friends Praed (Lebanon). DJ support comes from the label owner Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies and the Rebel Up dj’s.

Senwaya
this duo from Yogyakarta is headed by Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryardi. Indonesian traditional music forms the basis, but the duo uses playing techniques from experimental genres to create a completely unique sound. Hardcore metal, improvisation and traditional ritual music played with an intensity as if punk. Singer Shabare uses vocal traditions of the island in his singing but can also heavy metal grunting. Suryardi plays self-built instruments with names like ‘Gary’, ‘Bambu Wukir’ and ‘Aker Mahoni’. During performances, the duo uses homemade electronics to edit the sound of the vocals and instruments live. Their new album ‘Sujud’ has just been released.

Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band
from Burkina Faso and was born as Mamadou Sanou and earned his spurs as a dancer and then as a singer and musician with groups like Dounia and the accompaniment band of Burkina Faso’s greatest star: Victor Démé. Baba Commandant plays the ‘ngoni’, the traditional instrument of the Donse tribe, traditional hunters in the region of Burkina Faso and Mali. He is aided by his Mandingo band of veteran musicians of the mandinko tradition, enfused with rock. The main influences of the group are Nigerian greats Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade but also Moussa Doumbia, the Malinese response to James Brown. Check their debut album ‘Juguya’ and their afro rocker album ‘Siri Ba Kele’ has which just been released

Praed (Lebanon)
“The band’s body of work mainly explores the terrain of Arabic popular music (“Shaabi”) and its interconnectedness with other psychedelic and hypnotic musical genres in the world, such as free jazz, space jazz, and psychedelic rock among others. Since its inception, Praed has shown a very keen interest in this music as a medium that reflects Egyptian society’s complicated fabric. Through the research it conducted, the band began to discover a strong cultural connection between “Shaabi” sounds and the “Mouled” music that is played in religious trance ceremonies. The hypnotizing psychedelic effect that was embedded in this genre also triggered thoughts around its similarity to other popular music in the world that employ forms of sonic delirium, such as free jazz and psychedelic rock.”
