Fri 16 May Rebel Up! Sebcat @ Pantropical party, WORM R’dam with Yan Koy & Color Rumba (RDC/BE)

color rumba 16mei

This coming friday 16 May, Pantropical organises a super special Congolese night in Worm are totally psyched to finally be able to host a rare LIVE show by Color Rumba! They are masters at playing classic Congolese rumba soukous from the sixties to the eighties; super infectious and dancable music! Some of their bandmembers performed with famous Congolese bands such as Franco’s Orchestre T.P.O.K. Jazz, Zaiko Langa Langa and Demba. Don’t miss out on this one!

+++++++++++++++++++

Yan Koy & COLOR RUMBA (RDC/BE)
This band’s mastery of the Congolese soukous from the 1960s to 1980s will bring you to dance! Rumba is a genre of dance music that originated from Cuban Rumba in the Belgian and French Congo during the 1940s and later garnered popularity throughout Africa, followed by the Soukous style with a more modern upbeat sound from the late 70’s onwards. Led by singer Yan Koy, Color Rumba is a band with a revolving cast of members such as luminaries Petit Poisson (guitar), Pappy Muntu (bass), Alonzo Baba (drums) and others who played in famous Congolese bands like Franco’s TPOK Jazz and Zaiko Langa Langa. In their two hour live set, Color Rumba will take you to the Congolese nirvana of tropical rock with beautifully cascading, sparkling guitar melodies, a super tight and hypnotic rhythm section and polyphonic vocals. Absolutely essential!

• ALEX FIGUEIRA (VE – Vintage Voudou, Music with Soul)
Venezolan/Portugese Alex Figueira is a pleasantly obsessed vinyl junkie, label man, musician and dj. He is a true music specialist on afro-venezuelan culture and runs the Vintage Voudou vinyl shop in the midst of Amsterdam’s red light district; a treasure trove of obscure 2nd hand tropical gems. Alex also puts out 45’s on his label Music With Soul and plays in the bands Papa Upa and Fumaça Preta. At Pantropical, Alex will spin the dopest African and Caribbean music. Raw but dancable stuff, vinyl only!

• SEBCAT (BE – Rebel Up!)
This boss man selector operates from Bruxelles; unearthing, filtering and mixing the best diasporic & rougher sounds from the global underground. He’s the motor behind many great party and concert nights in wellknown clubs like the Recyclart and Bonnefooi. Sebcat also writes for Gonzo magazine and recently honoured the seminal Sublime Frequencies label with the ‘Rajasthan Street Music’ 2lp compilation.

• LA PANTHЀRE NOIRE (CIV/NL)
Upbeat local kid Dani who once twiddled knobs and rearranged cable salads at Worm as part of the technical team. Using the same moniker for his paintings, he will do the buildup of this night, with a mix of soukous and afrohouse. More of the latter.

Fri 25 April > Rebel Up! Soundclash *what king?* night @ OCCII, A’dam w/ Ian Nagoski (US), Cian Nugent & The Cosmos (IE) + dj Eddy De Clercq

flyer-Rebel-Up-25-apr

Ahoy folks!
a new Rebel Up! Soundclash night coming up again!  *what king*?

IAN NAGOSKI returns to Europe for another series of his hypnotic interactive lectures on disappearing music of the 20th Century, this time with an exploration entitled “100 Moons: Stories of Great Forgotten Musicians and the Boundaries of Humanness from 78rpm Records”. His label Canary Records (pressed and distributed by Mississippi Records) reissues early 20th century recordings in languages other than English like a modern day Harry Smith. In the past year, he has published acclaimed collections of Hindustani classical vocal music (100 Moons and Kesarbai Kerkar 1944-54), Greek urban folk music (Rita Abatzi – 1933-37), the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Widow’s Joy: Eastern European Immigrant Dances, 1925-30), and published writing in Yeti, Sound American, Ephemerotera Quarterly and The Wire. In recent years, he also published compilations on the Dust-to-Digital (Black Mirror: Reflections in Global Musics) and Tompkins Square (To What Strange Place: Music of the Ottoman-American Diaspora) labels. Nagoski’s work is now highly regarded, with high profile admirers ranging from DJ/rupture to Henry Rollins, and you can also still read several interview with and articles by him from 2013 at the Sound American site.   100-moons

‘Lecture’ may seem too formal a term for something so immersive and transporting as one of Ian’s 90-minute explorations of the disappearing music he unearths and its social/cultural roots and routes. Ian shares his love of his findings both in words and by listening to and discussing various carefully chosen shellac gems with you.
CIAN NUGENT & THE COSMOS (NO QUARTER RECORDS)
Debut tour for Cian Nugent & The Cosmos from Ireland; a 5 piece band (guitar, bass, viola, drums, organ) lead by guitar player Cian Nugent, performing material from/based on his album ‘Born With The Caul’ on No Quarter Records, just came out this November 12th.

After exploring the acoustic guitar on his 2011 album “Doubles “, VHF Records, which was acclaimed by the likes of Pitchfork ( http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15618-doubles/ ) and The Wire “(…) Nugent has: already mastered dynamics, articulation and tone. He introduces each new melody and change of emotional tenor at precisely the right moment to keep you on the edge with him”, with “Born with Caul”, Cian has now moved to electric, where he is equally stunning; and his music has enrichened with Blues, Country and Psych Rock influences.

DJ EDDY DE CLERCQ – TOWNSHIP JIVE & KWELA JAZZ VINYL SET (1940-60)
The Belgian but Amsterdam based longtime dj Eddy de Clercq will play his collection of rare vintage South African jive & twisting gems from International Library of African Music (ILAM).This is joyous, irrepressible stuff, which sounds much fresher in its original incarnation than it ever did in American appropriations (yes, Paul Simon, we’re talking to you!). check out his excellent Soul Safari blog!

Sun 20 April special *Peruvian Chicha Cumbia* vinyl set by SebCat @ Bonnefooi, Bxl

This sunday afternoon, he’ll be playing a special chicha cumbia vinyl set at the Bonnefooi from 16:00 til 20:00.

cult band Los Shapis

cult band Los Shapis

Chicha cumbia is the Peruvian style of psychedelic cumbia originated in the Amazonian north and taken to the big cities, becoming famous allover the country and stil is! In those times, the chicha cumbia was looked down upon by many people (of higher so-called *sophisticated* classes), seeing it as music for the poor, the drunk, the criminals, the immigrants from the north or highlands. Indeed, it was the music of the poor labourers, those who lived & worked in shantytowns, music that sung about their hardships, giving them inspiration at the same time. All this makes for a wonderfull vintage style that possesses a special power through enchanting melodies, tremolo guitars and strong lyrics.

cropped-choledades-21

The biggest bands of that era were Los Destellos, Los Diablos Rojos, Los Mirlos, Los Shapis, Chacalón Y La Nueva Crema, Juaneco Y Su Combo, Los Wemblers de Iquitos and many more. If you like to get this music, we can highly recommend the excellent Roots of Chicha compilations on Brussels label Crammed Discs or the refined Cumbia Beat compilations on Vampisoul.

22 Feb > You India Like? Rajasthan Street Music LP release party @ Studio Marcel, Brussels

you india like

A special night in Studio Marcel (Recyclart) this saturday 22 Feb >>>>>>  >>>> > > >>>>> > >

Our very own Rebel Up! SebCat will let us see contemporary street level India (Rajasthan) through his eyes but also through other eyes, through photographs, live movie clips and video clips. Rajasthan culture without the safe typecasted tourist view but roughly enhanced by encounters with locals, having stayed in their homes and villages and getting a close feel of their daily lives.

The Indian streets are the main theme tonight, as this is also the release party of the double vinyl ‘Rajasthan Street Sounds’, recorded by Seb and just out now on the amazing outernational SUBLIME FREQUENCIES label. The sounds on this LP are sincere and filled with context by who sings & plays them > no big artists, but the Rajasthani street folk musicians who have a tough life and never get the right respect for their musical skills within their own society. These recordings were made in 2007 with folk musicians on the street or in their homes, on regional folk instruments such as ravannattah violin, kamaycha cello, ektara lute of morchang jewish harp.

a sufi & hindu spiritual concert by the Ali Kawa Brothers (Rajasthan) who hail from a musical family of Rajasthani master musicians from the pink city of Jaipur. On vocals, tabla and harmonium for a true feeling of the trancendental islamic & hindu reverence sound that can be heard allover Rajasthan

The whole night will be coloured with projections of photo’s by Seb Bassleer, David Tesinsky, Maarten Van Der Glas, Vanessa Verbeiren, Jet van Zwieten and Neire Le Neiro, as well as movie projections of road & music clips by Maarten Van Der Glas in a different room. There should be fresh chai and spicy fried snacks available for a real taste of the Indian streets,

+ Hellvete (BE)
Glen Steenkiste alias Hellvete is a member of psych outfit Sylvester Anfang II and also of the Kraak and Funeral Folk label. He draws influences from old folk music and drones to make hypnotic tapestries. Tonight he will play a special warmup drone-out set of multi-layered harmonium & sruti box airwaves beyond the realm of raga into eternal bliss.

+ Dj’s of the night > SebCat’s Maj Tahal (cassette folk, digital folkpop, Filmy discopop & cassettes from India) et DJ soFa (Bollywood, Kollywood & Lollwood reissues)
