Our very own Rebel Up! SebCat will let us see contemporary street level India (Rajasthan) through his eyes but also through other eyes, through photographs, live movie clips and video clips. Rajasthan culture without the safe typecasted tourist view but roughly enhanced by encounters with locals, having stayed in their homes and villages and getting a close feel of their daily lives.

The Indian streets are the main theme tonight, as this is also the release party of the double vinyl ‘Rajasthan Street Sounds’, recorded by Seb and just out now on the amazing outernational SUBLIME FREQUENCIES label. The sounds on this LP are sincere and filled with context by who sings & plays them > no big artists, but the Rajasthani street folk musicians who have a tough life and never get the right respect for their musical skills within their own society. These recordings were made in 2007 with folk musicians on the street or in their homes, on regional folk instruments such as ravannattah violin, kamaycha cello, ektara lute of morchang jewish harp.


a sufi & hindu spiritual concert by the Ali Kawa Brothers (Rajasthan) who hail from a musical family of Rajasthani master musicians from the pink city of Jaipur. On vocals, tabla and harmonium for a true feeling of the trancendental islamic & hindu reverence sound that can be heard allover Rajasthan

The whole night will be coloured with projections of photo’s by Seb Bassleer, David Tesinsky, Maarten Van Der Glas, Vanessa Verbeiren, Jet van Zwieten and Neire Le Neiro, as well as movie projections of road & music clips by Maarten Van Der Glas in a different room. There should be fresh chai and spicy fried snacks available for a real taste of the Indian streets,

+ Hellvete (BE)
Glen Steenkiste alias Hellvete is a member of psych outfit Sylvester Anfang II and also of the Kraak and Funeral Folk label. He draws influences from old folk music and drones to make hypnotic tapestries. Tonight he will play a special warmup drone-out set of multi-layered harmonium & sruti box airwaves beyond the realm of raga into eternal bliss.

Rebel Up! in the Baltics & on Stereosala radio show (Riga Radio)

last weekend on a trip to the Baltics, had great fun playing on parties in Vilnius (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvia), big up to the Baltic Balkan folks for the invitation on their awesome wild Balkanaktis party & punky Café Leningrad.

Another Rebel Up! Soundclash night coming up with a sweet line up of afrolicious guests.

East London musician A.J.Holmes is the founding member & singer of The Hackney Empire band, who play a marriage of afro-pop and soukous paired with traditional pop sensibilities as a serious warm vibe. A.J. learned to play African *palm wine* guitar music from Folo Graff who played with Sierra Leonese legend S.E. Rogie (the king of palm wine guitar music) and from that moment on he got totally sucked into African music which also resulted into co-organising the succesfull Secousse club nights of tropical madness in London together with global electronic duo Radioclit (M.I.A., The Very Best, Amadou & Mariam). On this night he will play a solo palm wine guitar set as warmup, followed by a super special set with guitar & dj decks at the same time for a unique approach of his mixed African sound. dj Alex Figueira, born in Venezuala with Brazilian roots, has a BIG passion for vinyl; he is the co owner of the Vintage Voudou vinyl shop in A’dam, a grand collector of vintage African and Latin vinyls, runs the Music With Soul label and plays in the bands Fumaça Preta & Conjunto Papa Upa. This passionate spinning man will sure make you bounce & swing with his special delicious selections from the tropics. and oh, it’s his birthday party!!!

1st Rebel Up Nightshop radio show *emission 0*

Yo folks,

Our very first radio show session, “emission 0” on Radio Campus Bxl, broadcasted on 11th of january and to be repeated several times during the month. The show was actually recorded in late august and we had to wait a while before it was accepted into the Campus programme schedule. We kick off with 2 songs, followed by a label focus about the Sahel Sounds label that mostly releases current folk & electronic music from the sub Saharan region. Then we played our albums of the month, which were Hailu Mergia (on Awesome Tapes From Africa) and Grand Kallé & l’Orchestre Jazz (on Planet Ilunga), followed by a global style focus on Pandza music from the south of Mozambique, a new electronic Marrabenta Shangaan style. In the nightshop segment we interview local Afghani shop owner Raza Wasiq of the Economat shop on Av Stalingrad and he chooses 2 ‘Hazzari’ songs to play. Back in business for this new year full of promises. At least this next Saturday we’ll make sure you’ll be grooving at Cafe De Vinger. Hot music are welcome in these times and Christmas has been kind on new sound collecting. Get ready for mashing tunes from all around the world. This time the benefit will go to activity project for Brazilian street kids.

Brazilian NGO Tiaozinho

During the next 3 months, a sports project for children and adolescents in one of the Sao Paulo favela’s will be organised. The aim is to stimulate social skills, values like team spirit, playing together and fairplay so that the youths can make positive decisions in their future life, but the main goal simply is to just have fun and enjoy themselves. Sports that will feature are football, volleyball & circus techniques and some other activities. Also friendly tournaments will be organised for the children as an end goal to all their sports training and with an incentive for them to invite their family into their playing environment as part of the social process. For this project, they need to raise money to buy sports equipment (balls, nets, clothing etc) and to cover other costs.
