New release: ‘Free The System’ single EP by Dandana

Free The System!’ is the new single EP by the band Dandana, to be released on Friday 19 June on Rebel Up Records. Including an ancestral afrofuturist remix by Afro-Dutch producer Philou Louzolo.

‘Free The System!’ is about the gap between the older generation and the younger generation. The old system can’t easily deal with young or new idea’s. The current global pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement clearly show us that the system needs to be changed, we have to free ourselves from it.

The videoclip premiered on Pan African Music blog (see article)

and also international UK blog The Ransom Note did an article about the remix by Afro Dutch producer Philou Louzolo and the videoclip. see here >

DANDANA is a collective band of musicians from the Netherlands, Senegal and The Gambia with members Bas Ackermann, Ebou Gaye Mada, Filly Dioma, Jackson Loman, Joop de Graaf and Modou Joof. Together they chose to let go of the past and take a new musical path. Their sound pays tribute to traditional West African rhythm & grooves, with instruments from Senegal and The Gambia such as sabar, xalam and balafon with live drums, electronic drum pads and a range of vintage synthesizers. Inspired by West African psychedelic mandingue pioneers Guelewar, Ifang Bondi & Touré Kunda to the synth-driven vibes of bands like Air & Tame Impala. “Free the System” will take you on a journey through a new universe.

Sat 18 Nov > El Pulpo Collective goes Afro Latino @ La Tentation, w/ Ussu N’djai + Pigmaliao

On saturday, the return of El Pulpo collective with Rebel Up in La Tentation.
A very special Afro Latino concert & party night with an Afro Portuguese touch, with the band Ussu N’Djai & The New Balansa from Guinee Bissau/Senegal/Amsterdam and producer/DJ Pigmaliao from Brasil and more surprises.

Ussu N’djai & The New Balansa
the Amsterdam-based group of Ussumane ‘Balansa’ N’djai brings an exciting mix of different West-African music styles (m’balax, m’gumbeh, Afro-Mandingo, Carribean reggae, salsa and funk.) Balansa composed the songs with texts in different West-African languages such as Wolof, Mandingo, Creole, French, English and Portugese, a true afro latin mixture with cultural roots.

Pigmalião (BR)
Pigmalião is the materialization of the reference from the label Frente Bolivarista and remains in constant transformation alongside the label release narrative. Frente Bolivarista has made a stellar rise over the past year to be one of the labels to watch for the future of Latin America music.  Brazilian musical legacy has always seemed somewhat set apart from the rest of the continent but the label, alongside the growing links between booming São Paulo and Buenos Aires, Quito or Lima shows that the tide is changing. It is indeed the becoming, and going even further than, the musical version of Bolivar’s dream: a global collaboration of new, inter infected, border hopping sounds shaping the future of Latin American music.

ahoy folks!

Another Rebel Up! Soundclash night coming up with a sweet line up of afrolicious guests.

aj holmes
East London musician A.J.Holmes is the founding member & singer of The Hackney Empire band, who play a marriage of afro-pop and soukous paired with traditional pop sensibilities as a serious warm vibe. A.J. learned to play African *palm wine* guitar music from Folo Graff who played with Sierra Leonese legend S.E. Rogie (the king of palm wine guitar music) and from that moment on he got totally sucked into African music which also resulted into co-organising the succesfull Secousse club nights of tropical madness in London together with global electronic duo Radioclit (M.I.A., The Very Best, Amadou & Mariam). On this night he will play a solo palm wine guitar set as warmup, followed by a super special set with guitar & dj decks at the same time for a unique approach of his mixed African sound. We can only say; not to be missed! Listen to his mixtape & songs of what to expect.

alex f
dj Alex Figueira, born in Venezuala with Brazilian roots, has a BIG passion for vinyl; he is the co owner of the Vintage Voudou vinyl shop in A’dam, a grand collector of vintage African and Latin vinyls, runs the Music With Soul label and plays in the bands Fumaça Preta & Conjunto Papa Upa. This passionate spinning man will sure make you bounce & swing with his special delicious selections from the tropics. and oh, it’s his birthday party!!!
