sat 26; triple Rebel Up! in 3 different countries simultaneously! > Netherlands, Belgium & Great Britain

yeah, it’s no hoax or joke; Rebel Up! is divided in three equal parts to go and play at 3 parties on the same night, at the same time!
This never happened before, so it’s a funny fact to remember.  so hope you can choose the party closest and to your liking 😉

RU 26-10-13
first up, our special fundraiser night @ de Vinger in Den Haag, where we will have the mighty awesome Orchestre du Mont-Plaistant (FR/UK) playing their global funk and jazz psychedelica. The night will be hosted by Rebel Up! Palm M who will bring on his best heat 🙂

You’ll get to jive on this four-guy combo from London. They bring back a bit of soundtrack psychedelia from the 60’s and 70’s, with them you’ll also get into some nifty African and Latino sounds. Rebel Up! DJs will wrap it all up to let you bounce some more.

Benefits at the entrance will go for a great cause, the Stahili Foundation, fighting to give a normal life for Kenyan orphans. So every extra cent is worth it.

Sat. 30 June > Rebel Up! Soundclash & A/V Club present global lo-fi night; Alvarius B (US) + Sublime Frequencies dj set & Riquetik’s goodbye party

Hello all!
Time for a fresh Rebel Up! Soundclash night again > a special globla lo-fi night together with the fine folks of A/V Club. We have Alan Bishop as a special guest, who will play his Alvarius B solo project and do a Sublime Frequencies dj set afterwards.  Sadly, it is also Riquetik’s goodbye party as he is leaving Rebel Up! & A’dam to go pursue his academic career in Budapest.

Here’s the roll > >

ALVARIUS B
Rare Acoustic Solo Performance (starts 23:30)
Alvarius B. is the acoustic guitar/singer-songwriter alias of Alan Bishop, a major player/seminal figure of the American underground – a founding member of Sun City Girls and the Sublime Frequencies record label (Omar Souleyman/Group Doueh/Group Inerane etc.). This project sees Alan unbalance and entertain using a twisted song cycle blend of humour, politics and heartbreak with melodies old, broken and new – a lethal cocktail for the senses.

SUBLIME FREQUENCIES DJ set
Sublime Frequencies is a record label and collective with explorers dedicated to focus on acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers.

REBEL UP! SOUNDCLASH CREW
Especially for this night, the Rebel Up! crew will play eclectic vintage & lo-fi sounds from all corners and ages of the globe, from folk to pop, psychedelica, rock and backwards. Accompanied by grainy, vintage visuals to make sure there’s never a dull moment on the dancefloor

Profits on the night will go to NGO Bhakti Luhur in Malang, Eastern Java, which takes care of handicapped children. One of the aid workers is a dutchman who runs the excellent Madrotter Treasure Hunt blog, all about Indonesian pop, rock and folk music from the past with quality uploads.

Namaste,

the Kawa brothers

tonight the Rajasthani Kawa Brothers will be playing at Compilotheque!
The Kawa family hail from Jaipur -the pink royal city- where they have been raised with the legacy of traditional Rajasthani folk music and Indian classical compositions on the sarangi, santoor and tabla. Should be a special concert in true desertlike spheres of Rajasthan.  See a video here.

Before and after, Rebel Up! Seb will play his Rajasthani recordings that he recorded on the streets and in people`s homes during a 6 month Indian music trip in 2007-2008. After the summer, a compilation of these Rajasthani recordings will be released on American cult label Sublime Frequencies by the title *Rajasthani Street Music*

tomorrow/today 6th nov; special night @ OCCII, A’dam

No, not a Rebel Up! night (we got ours on Saturday, that’s good enough), but a MKM night @ OCCII!.

Some really fresh history to that; last night I went to see Robert Millis, a long time Sublime Frequencies collaborator and therefore a fine soulmate of us. He gave an excellent viewing of his road movies My Friend Rain (Birma) and Phi Ta Khon (Northern Thailand) that he made together with fingerpicker/guitarist Sir Richard Bishop.
Only 5 people were there, including OCCII staf. Such a pity and people missed out BIG time. The Subbacultcha evening seemed more important to some (even though that one went on till late).

Along with some limited Molam ISAN & Tamil Nadu cdr-s and his Phi Ta Khon movie, I also picked up this Victrola gem. wow!

Tomorrow at the MKM night with Orchestre Tout Puissant de Marcel Duchamp, Robert will be playing under his Climax Golden Twins moniker, definately worth it, so don’t miss!

ORCHESTRE TOUT PUISSANT DE MARCEL DUCHAMP (Geneva, Swiss) *
Just like the artist in whose honour the band is named, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp like to fuck with the conventions of pop just as much as the Dadaist Duchamp liked to fuck with the conventions of art, throwing up double bass, electrified minimal guitar, trombone, drums and a singing violinist where more conventional bands would stick to, well, you know, conventional band stuff.
Don’t let that suggest a pile of arty nonsense though, because Afrogarage and NAP are pop tunes. Yes, pop tunes that sound like Marcel Marceau wanking to jazz funk, but pop tunes all the same. Check out the slap bass intro and jazzy whig out of Afrogarage and the folky strings and marimba rhythm of NAP for all the proof you need that this is a band 17 steps and 3 scotch eggs ahead of the party.

Thursday 4th of June; Rebel Up! Soundclash & QuJunktions presents Sublime Frequencies 2009 Tour, with ~live~ Omar Souleyman (Syria) , Group Doueh (Western Sahara) & Sublime Frequencies DJ set & movie!

Sublime Frequencies tour 2009, with special artists playing Europe for the 1st time ever!

Omar Souleyman (Syria)

omar1_small

Syrian street level folkpop; traditional dabke folk music mixed with electronic dance beats, unreal music from the middle east! Back home, Souleyman performs at engagements & weddings as party singer for local Syrians and soon also for westeners. @ Rebel Up! we have many times played his songs on our nights, making you all dance and wondering -who is this special artist?- Well now, it’s (y)our first chance to hear him play in the flesh, don’t miss Souleyman’s folkrave extravaganza!

Group Doueh (Western Sahara)
doueh1_small1

Raw trancedental desert blues with traditional Sahrawi/Hassania folk music. Expect rough guitars and nomadic singing styles into one heavy lofi sound as never heard before from the sandy dunes of the Sahara. Let yourself be amazed by this Saharan sound of sweet lofi folkpunk.

Alan Bishop & Mark Gergis of the Sublime Frequencies label will play an eclectic dj set. Also the new movie  PALACE OF THE WINDS by Hisham Mayet about the Saharawi people of the Mauritanian sahara will be shown, wow!

~Just check out video’s of the artists & movie at the tour site of Sublime Frequencies!~
