King Ayisoba & Band (GH)King is coming back to Brussels, and this time is bringing his band with him!

This is the traditional kologo music from the Upper East Region of Ghana brought with the energy and flavor of the 21st century. King Ayisoba sings in Frafra, Twi and in English and is a big star in Ghana. A whole new scene has started after King Ayisoba introduced the super catchy kologo beats to the bigger audiences in Ghana and abroad. The kologo is a two string guitar with a calabash gourd resonator, it is rhythmic and melodic at the same time. The King is bringing other musicians and dancers on this tour, dancing the traditional Frafra dia and kologo dances from the area of Bongo in Northern Ghana. The dance consists of very high jumbs and originates from hunting rituals. Aboku Adortanga (dancer and dorgo player) is King Ayisoba’s brother and is a master in playing the “Dorgo”, a special horn from Northern Ghana used in the traditional Frafra tradition of music. The sound resembles a lamb calling out loud and was original used by the Frafra people in the forest to gather the village people to come and hunt. Gemeka is an absolute master in playing the guluku, a local drum from Bolgatanga Soko in Northern Ghana. Since a few years the young Dagaati has been part of King Ayisoba’s band. At first he came to the concerts and kept coming and telling Ayisoba he could play Ayisoba’s songs on his xylophone. That was quite unusual, since Dagaati comes from the Dagaati region in upper west in Ghana. But the addition of the xylophone to the kologo, drums and voice works fantastic and Dagaati became a core musician of King Ayisoba’s band and it is already hard to imagine how the band sounded without this very talented young man. Brazilian NGO Tiaozinho

During the next 3 months, a sports project for children and adolescents in one of the Sao Paulo favela’s will be organised. The aim is to stimulate social skills, values like team spirit, playing together and fairplay so that the youths can make positive decisions in their future life, but the main goal simply is to just have fun and enjoy themselves. Sports that will feature are football, volleyball & circus techniques and some other activities. Also friendly tournaments will be organised for the children as an end goal to all their sports training and with an incentive for them to invite their family into their playing environment as part of the social process. For this project, they need to raise money to buy sports equipment (balls, nets, clothing etc) and to cover other costs.

busy times at Rebel Up!, as one of our crew members will be representing Rebel Up! at the Womex world music expo in Cardiff and playing some sets in Bristol. But thankfully Rebel Up! Leblanc is there to cover and take over Rebel Up! duties.
This wednesday evening 23rd it’s time for another KK World evening at the KultuurKaffee. Afro-Canadian/Haïtian singer Spaïcy will come and give her soul jazz and african creole spheres. Free in, doors open from 20:00. Check all the info here.

Hi Rebel Up! friends,

We’re back from Russia where we had incredible gigs in St Petersburg and Moscow along with The Ex, De Kift and Skip and Die. Plenty of memories and slight hangover but Den Haag hasn’t heard from us for too long and that’s why we’re ready to let Cafe De Vinger tremble again from the various vibes we’re aiming at you. For those who like vintage Afro and Latino sounds come early to show your best moves, the ones who like rougher bassy beats will be delighted to hear DJ Mataklap is coming to deliver his long time experienced mixes, it can be New Wave Cumbia, Moombah as well as Reggada or Shangaan… If you don’t know what that means, come and find out for yourself, your heartbeats will do the rest.

Special guest of the night is Agga resident Mataklap (ex-Bomb Diggy), who since this year rides other global soundwaves to surely to make folks shake. Rebel Up! residents Palm M and SebCat will take up the flame to keep the night burning with swinging global styles.

As always your entrance fee shall go towards a good cause. Profits of the night will go to an orphanage project in Indonesia. This summer, Mataklap spent some time helping out at the Saewa Dharma Children’s Home in Pakisan, Bali. This home takes care of children whose parents are unable to do so. This is mostly due to poverty. Apart from providing these children a home and food, Saewa Dharma focuses on building spiritual strength, an appreciation of morality and education. The children all go to school when they’re old enough, and at the home itself they receive additional lessons in Yoga and English language. They are also frequently exposed to foreign cultures by volunteers from overseas. The home itself maintains an intimate atmosphere, with three volunteers who care for the children round the clock. They rely completely on donations, mostly from the immediate community itself, as well as various donations from different sources.

We will play all kinda African sounds non-stop in the world food village near to the entrance from 12:00 to 18:00. Sunny n hot sounds ensured!

Saturday afternoon, we’ll be spinning various soft n folky global sounds in Molenbeek as part of the local Wijkfeest/Fete du Quartier in (Parc) Bonneviepark, with lots of animation and activities for children. It runs from 13:00 – 18:00 and it’s free in for young and old.
