Thu + Fri + Sat > Arte Chicha de Ruta Mare, Peru @ Recyclart, Bxl + Pakebo, Liege

hola todas!
DOSSIER BELGICAthis week, 3 special Peruvian events in Brussels & Liege
For the first time in Belgium > street art collective Ruta Mare will showcase their art between 17 and 20 november!

Yefferson and Kelly form Ruta Mare, a duo that embodies an exemplary renewal of the Peruvian Chicha culture. Created in 2012, around their common passion for the popular culture of the streets of Lima, Ruta Mare develops artistic works that implement the reminiscences of a collective Peruvian imagination. By creating gigantic mural frescos or serigraphs, they readily mix popular imagery and traditional motifs in favour of a resolutely urban and committed aesthetic.

Yefferson and Kelly are particularly aware of the graphic identity they convey and claim without any complexity their belonging to the Chicha culture, notably through a fabulous typographic work. Ruta Mare brings graphic design in urban space in their own original way and always taking the art of Chicha back to its roots: art of the people for the people.

On Thrusday 17 nov in Brussels @ Recyclart with an expo + projection & talk at the Licky My Typo night. Make sure you reserve or come on time, as it will sell out!

This Friday evening a special evening in underground venue Le Lac (Molenbeek, not to confuse with Les Ateliers Claus)

Phoenician Drive (Bxl)
At the crossroads of Mediterranean folk music and psychedelic rock, Phoenician Drive was formed in summer 2015 by percussionist Diego Moscoso grouping 6 musicians from very different backgrounds (flamenco, Balkan, psychedelic rock’n’roll, jazz, post -punk / new wave) for blending traditional designs with fuzz guitars and oriental rhythms. In the footsteps of Erkin Koray and Orient Express and under the influence of ‘kraut-rock German (Neu !, CAN, Faust etc.) and soundtracks 60’s music, Phoenician Drive Search hypnotic trance by relying on oriental grooves. Two demos were recorded in December 2015 and quickly attracted interest in Brussels (Ateliers Claus WIELS, Recyclart, Atelier 210) and elsewhere (Rockerill, Area B in Paris). An EP is being mixed into the hands of Débruit (label ICI).

The concert will start at 20h sharp by a prologue without electricity, enlightened by 400 artisanal candles.

Sat 29 Oct > experimental evening by Rebel Up! & Lexi Disques @ NGHE Mediatheque with Porest (US/IR), Blood Stereo (UK), City Hands (NL) & Benjamin Franklin (Bxl)

Salam!
14725767_1785415645009331_8060045096061241209_nOn Saturday 29 Oct, an experimental concert night in the NGHE mediatheque! Organised by NGHE crew, Rebel Up! & Lexi Disques.

From synthesizer sounds to global cut up music, weirdo pop and adventures in sound.

Porest (US/IR)
Mark Gergis is quite a catch; founder of the Sham Palace label, long time collaborator of Sublime Frequencies and member of disbanded Asian pop group Neung Phak. Porest is his post-globalized hate pop project, with cabalistic text-to-speech drama and violent tape music against soapbox anthems and swirling barbed-wire psychedelia that indulges in the trappings of art and politics. Listen here.
At 18h, he will show 3 short movies that he made in Syria, Cambodia and Southeast Asia, in true Sublime Frequencies style!

Blood Stereo (Brighton, UK)
The masked duo Karen Constance & Dylan Nyoukis explore hand-cranked 20th century technology in combination with epiglottal gymnastics and free music modes inherited as much from punk rock’s mutilated aesthetic as utopian art styles. Music here.

City Hands (NL)
Dutch sound artist Manuel Padding aka City Hands approach brings unexpected sounds, from calm atmospheres to trippy vibrations and even poetry. His narratives generally evoke a world where humans no longer prevail, a stream of words lurking into post-apocalyptic loneliness and colourful magic.

Benjamin Franklin (Bxl)
Casio keyboard player Benjamin Franklin puts out graceful and mysterious home-taped recordings of hypnotic melodies, sweet ballad and deviant pop. Perfect warmup sounds to gently shake body & mind.

> finishing at 22h30, so please come on time!
possibly there will some veggie food too for those who come early.

18h > 3 short films of Mark Gergis (Syria – Cambodia – Southeast Asia)
19h Benjamin Franklin
20h City Hands & Blood Stereo
21h Porest
ends at 22:30 >

We will continue the afterparty @ Via Via cafe (Quai aux Briques 74 / St Cat)

Wed 26 Oct > Rebel Up! @ Les Ateliers Claus, w/ Meridian Brothers (CO) & Senyawa (ID)

Hello

This Wednesday 26 Oct, Rebel Up! @ Les Ateliers Claus to warm up / between and continue the mid week party with the alternative global bands Meridian Brothers (Colombia) and Senyawa (Indonesia). A night from Bogota to Jogjakarta!!

meridian_brothers_malaria_sonora-8From Bogota, Colombia, the MERIDIAN BROTHERS are an art-combo who mix Latin American rhythms with art noise and unpredictable sonic events. Traditional instruments and computer technology all contribute to this mixture of influences from vintage tropical styles from the Colombian coastal zone, the Caribbean and Peru to electronic folk and Dolly Parton. Imagine the illegitimate offspring of a liaison between the Residents and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and you´ll be close to the sound of the Meridian Brothers. Convincing Latin dance rhythms are overlaid with skeletal guitars and vocal tomfoolery to create a mesmerising confection of minimalism, cumbia, pop, electronica and Afro-funk. The band formed in 1998, spearheaded by leader Eblis Alvarez, and sold cassette recordings in the capital of Colombia before releasing several albums. On their latest album ‘Los Suicidas’ they once again bring their unique, funny & experimental Colombian sound to make you go round and round into sweet delirium. Check out this video.
senyawa-540x300SENYAWA (ID) is an experimental band from Java, Indonesia consisting of Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi. The band has been formed in 2010 in Yogyakarta. The band mixes influences from musical and folklore traditions from the Indonesian archipelago with experimental music. The band neo-tribal sound has been described to mix “punk attitude” with “avant-garde aesthetics”. According to critics, Senyawa has managed to “manage to embody the aural flavours of Javanese music while exploring the framework of experimental music practice, pushing the boundaries of both traditions” to create a sound that is “thoroughly out of this world.”
Shabara provides his extended vocal techniques to Senyawa. The band’s lyrics are in various languages of Indonesia, including Sulawesian, Javanese and Bahasa Indonesia. Senyawa’s music is provided by Suryadi’s self-built musical instruments made from bamboo and traditional agricultural tools from rural Indonesia. Get your demons out!
