Sat 18 Nov > El Pulpo Collective goes Afro Latino @ La Tentation, w/ Ussu N’djai + Pigmaliao

On saturday, the return of El Pulpo collective with Rebel Up in La Tentation.
A very special Afro Latino concert & party night with an Afro Portuguese touch, with the band Ussu N’Djai & The New Balansa from Guinee Bissau/Senegal/Amsterdam and producer/DJ Pigmaliao from Brasil and more surprises.

Ussu N’djai & The New Balansa
the Amsterdam-based group of Ussumane ‘Balansa’ N’djai brings an exciting mix of different West-African music styles (m’balax, m’gumbeh, Afro-Mandingo, Carribean reggae, salsa and funk.) Balansa composed the songs with texts in different West-African languages such as Wolof, Mandingo, Creole, French, English and Portugese, a true afro latin mixture with cultural roots.

Pigmalião (BR)
Pigmalião is the materialization of the reference from the label Frente Bolivarista and remains in constant transformation alongside the label release narrative. Frente Bolivarista has made a stellar rise over the past year to be one of the labels to watch for the future of Latin America music.  Brazilian musical legacy has always seemed somewhat set apart from the rest of the continent but the label, alongside the growing links between booming São Paulo and Buenos Aires, Quito or Lima shows that the tide is changing. It is indeed the becoming, and going even further than, the musical version of Bolivar’s dream: a global collaboration of new, inter infected, border hopping sounds shaping the future of Latin American music.

Arumbo (ES/BE)
Brussels and Barcelona are bursting with music. For this band the perfect base to grow their fusion between rumba and worldgroove into something beautiful, something danceable and at the same time something fragile. Text and music straight from the heart and irresistible for your limbs. What at first sight seems soft and fragile, turns out to be a true popular party. Arumbo serves southern sounds and melodies where nobody can stand still.

Shaman Festival (BE)
It brings more than just music. It is a belief, a lifestyle in which freedom, celebration and mysticism are central. They themselves describe their music as kermispunk or turbofestiv, even though this is actually in short supply. Their mix of ska, reggae, cumbia, gipsy beats, Eastern rhythms, South-American, mariachi music and polka-punk, supplemented by a number of graceful belly dancers, leaves nobody unmoved. All compositions are performed by a horn section, cajon and percussion, Rumba guitars, electric guitar riffs and a lot of positive energy. Shaman Festival was founded in 2006 and has played more than 150 performances ever since. Shaman festival will present their latest EP “Open” at Rumba Town.

Thu 9 Nov > Rebel Up Soundclash w/ Luka Productions (Mali / Sahel Sounds) & dj Zé Karlo

This thursday, a last minute Rebel Up Soundclash @ OCCII with a very special guest from Mali > > >

LUKA PRUDUCTIONS (Mali / Sahel Sounds)
Luka Guindo, rapper, producer, and multi-instrumentalist and one of the most sought after producers of contemporary Malian Hip Hop. Working from a small bedroom sized studio alongside a busy street in the Malian capital city, Luka has built a reputation as one of the most prodigious beatmakers. Working with artists such as Supreme talent show, Ami Yerewolo, Iba One, van baxy and Sidiki Diabaté, Luka productions officiel is a household name in Bamako’s Hip Hop scene. New age music from West Africa. Lush and hypnotic dreamscapes combine traditional instrumentation with sweeping electronics, field recordings, and soothing affirmations. Bamako based composer Luka Productions delves into avant-griot, transforming ancient music into the 21st century. The songs are meditative and sage, as voices guide the listener through ways of living, from the village life to the modern world. Inspired from early electronic music, library records, and new age, this is easily one of the most left field recordings to ever come out of Mali.

RebelUp SebCat says; “amazing subtle album of afro-electronic moods, between the city & the bush. Modern Malian music from the young generation like you never heard…”

21:00 – Rebel Up Sebcat (Bxl)

23:30 – Sindicato Sónico (MEX) (CU) (CHI) (BE)
The sound of Sindicato Sonico can only be described as FIESTA music. The eight musicians come from different parts of Latin America (Mexico, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba). Each one of them smuggled in their own traditional Latin American style, culture and sound in the mix of the group. They consider themselves a Latin crossover group. Basically, they are sexy and explosive on stage while allowing cross pollination of traditional rhythms like funk, ska and rock. Add to that a dash of dance, and you know why Sindicato Sonico is one of those rare groups that always come back to wherever they play.

00:30 – THE RUDIES (BE)
The Rudies are 2 wildchild Dj’s that cross musical borders wherever they do their thing. Surprising, inventive and eclectic but with a clear vision. What they rave about: badass beats, fat grooves and grinding sounds but they are also such big lovers of worldmusic, swingjazz, baile funk and bhangra. Earopening dancemusic that’s what this is about!

Wedn 1 Nov > Eclectric Roots night @ Au Quai, Bxl w/ Kel Assouf, Desir Fiorini, Esinam & Ibaaku, Angstromers and Rebel Up

This is the first evening curated by Brussels organisation/agency Enthusiast Music. A blend of incredible bands nourished by diverse visions of the world. Authenticity, complexity, groove, love. Fighting through music and culture against any kind of border.
PART ONE, AN EXTREME DIALOG

DESIR FIORINI (HA/IT)
What if Viennese composer Franz Schubert would have travelled to Haiti and met the spirits of vodou in Carrefour la Mort ? What if we would travel back to an imaginary mixed XIXth Century ?
With their hyper-classical formula of a piano and a voice, Belgian piano player Fabian Fiorini and Haitian singer Renette Désir summon the spirit of German romantic composers together with vodou trance. They pay a twofold tribute to contemporary Haitian poetry and to the language of the Haitian of the street: Creole. At this concert Fiorini will perform on a Fender Rhodes. Exclusive!

KEL ASSOUF (NG/TN/Bxl)
Kel Assouf means both “nostalgia” and “son of eternity” in Tamashek, the language of the Sahara nomads. Kel Assouf currently work on a new album to be released in 2018 with an unconventional trio formula. Drummer Olivier Penu and keyboard player Sofyann Ben Youssef support singer and guitar player Anana Harouna. They add a layer of freedom and contrasts to the heavy rock sound typical of their last album Tikounen. Spirit of Woodstock in the desert ?

PART TWO, A JOURNEY INTO ECLECTRIC ROOTS

ESINAM – IBAAKU (GH/SN)– RELEASE!
Multi-instrumentalist Esinam recalls the spirit of her Ghanaian roots in a ballet of instruments slightly sustained by almost invisible loop machines. Born in Brussels, she finds inspiration in her journeys all over the world and encounters with different cultures. In her solo set, she uses electronic machines and turns into a « one-woman band ». She composes, plays and performs her own contemporary music with flute, percussions, vocals as well as traditional and modern instruments. She invites Ibaaku, the Senegalese free-spirit and eccentric code-breaker at the vanguard of African avant-garde. Ibaaku assimilates multiple genres for digital deconstruction and reconstitution as soundtracks for wildly inventive visual narratives full of buzzing cosmic mysticism. first live performance of Esinam’s new single, produced by Ibaaku! And more!

THE ANGSTROMERS (Bxl)
The first release of Chouk Bwa & the Ångstromers combines a new dub sensitivity with a Haitian rhythm science. It is a new collaboration between the traditional Haitian vodou band, Chouk Bwa, and the abstract sound engineering of the Ångstromers. The result is a very distinctive blend: a kind of future-leaning Vodou dub.
The Ångstromers will perform some live mix of recordings captured in Haiti in April 2017 with a specific approach they call “Future Chouk”.  their 7inch “Electric Mambo” will be available!

Tue 31 Oct > Rebel Up desert night @ Les Ateliers Claus, Bxl, with Ifriqiyya Electrique & Les Filles de Illighadad

Rebel Up! and Les Ateliers Claus present: a special night of spiritual desert spheres with Ifriqiyya Electrique, Les Filles de Illighadad & Gernas Haj Shekhmous.

Ifriqiyya Electrique (TN/FR/IT)
More than a concert, Ifriqiyya Electrique is the real adorcist rite of Sidi Marzûq practised by the Banga community in Djerid, between the salt desert and the oases of the Tunisian South. The Banga is a key annual event in the lives of the black communities of the oasis towns of southern Tunisia, descendants of the Hausa slaves transported from sub-Saharan Africa. It is a ritual of adorcism not of exorcism: of accommodating the possessing spirit rather than expelling it. The invitation has been issued by the rûwâhîne themselves, the spirits from whom the record borrows its title, and is taken up primarily in the streets and in private houses.
The band is fronted by 3 Tunisian musicians, Tarek Sultan, Yahia Chouchen and Youssef Ghazala on vocals, krakeb handcymbals and drums. French avant-garde guitarist François Cambuzat and Italian bass player Gianna Greco, both of Putan Club and Lydia Lunch fame.

“The devils are communicating with computers & electric guitars to recompose this ancient adorcist rite of possession and trance. No music note and no tempo were changed, for a transcendental now postindustrial ceremony.”  The spirits possess bodies, asking to be fed through a music of obvious modernity. Their debut album ‘Rûwâhîne‘ on the Glitterbeat label is a powerhouse of deep dark sound.

Les Filles de Illighadad (NG)
Added last minute to this lineup, Les Filles will make a surprise warmup appearance for the start of their Euro & Moroccan tour. The superb Sahel Sounds label (see too: Mdou Moctar, Mamman Sani and the excellent compilation ‘Music For Saharan Cellphones’) released the acclaimed debut album of guitarist Fatou Seidi Ghali and singer Alamnou Akrouni, together: Les Filles de Illighadad. Side A of that album is full of dreamy, minimalistic desert blues; on Side B you can hear a recording on which all the women from their village of birth – in the Nigerian countryside – combine polyphonic vocals with repetitive percussion. They have just released their follow-up album ‘Eghass Malan’, which takes their traditional sound into a more powerful guitar driven direction. Les Filles send a breath of fresh air through the male dominated genre of Tuareg guitar bands. They return to the essence of the genre, armed only with voice and guitar – complemented live by two extra musicians (including Mdou Moctar guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane).
