Otim Alpha & Leo Palayeng (UG) *live*
Hailing from the sweltering city of Gulu in Northern Uganda, both Alpha—an ex bare-knuckle boxer and master harp player—and Palayeng are considered pioneers of what’s become a veritable hyper-local electronic scene among the Acholi community. In 2001, Otim Alpha together with his early producer Leo Palayeng began taking traditional Acholi ‘Larakaraka’ wedding songs and reinterpreting them with music software on computers.

Due to the influence of missionaries who thought of them as non-Christian, Acholi traditions were for many years pushed to the periphery, and only preserved and passed down thanks to traditional musicians like Alpha. “When I recorded his traditional folk songs and added my electronic elements, local people loved the sound and it spread like wildfire,” says Palayeng. In his studio, the producer combined the adungu, nanga (both harps), fiddle and flute with synths and electronic drum-kit beats to create sounds that are equally nostalgic and forward-looking. The results are a fast paced poly-rhythmic Acholitronix ready for dance floor madness.

Most of the songs on the Gulu City Anthems are electronic re-interpretations of Larakaraka folk songs that are traditionally performed at weddings. The lyrics were different for each occasion, and would weave the long histories of the clans being united in marriage. “But people were not always able to afford the whole troop of musicians and dancers, so we started recreating the sounds with computers and singing the lyrics over the top—like karaoke,” Palayeng explains.

Released on the Nyege Nyege Tapes label, a Kampala based label exploring, producing and releasing outsider music from around the region and beyond.

Sun 15 Oct > experimental folk night with Ithak (FR), Osilasi (FR/BE) & La Tene (FR/CH)

Sunday evening, experimental folk night with:

╬ — LA TÈNE — ╬
is a Franco-Swiss trio that plays traditional music with saturated repetition, ethereal harmonics or imaginary choreographies. Industrial, dark and psychedelic trancedental at the same time with paganistic ritual compositions that seem to have no beginning or end. Taken from the newly released LP Tardive/Issime on Bongo Joe. 15 oct they play Bxl at la Senne underground venue.

╬ — ITHAK — ╬
an ancient dream. Devouring each morning heavy guitars and bold saxophones, he digests in the sun, washes himself to the streams of the world and his cities battle, guardian of the telluric forces to the electric weapons. Her voice pierces the skyscrapers, she goes as one looks for her lost island, with ardor and patience.

╬ — OSILASI — ╬
Violon à roue, singing, percussion, celtic harp. An influence of traditional music passed by their care to the mill and raised with the noisy sauce. Sometimes intimate, sometimes feverish, motives oscillate, evolve, unfold, and transform freely according to the perception of the moment.

╬ — REBEL UP SEBCAT — ╬
Dark Smyrna sounds, tribalist, folklormerdique and spiritual trance.

Sat 14 Oct > Rebel Up Duckfood @ Pantropical x Arab Film Festival

‘Pantropical x Arab Film Festival’ is an integral part of the annual Arab Film festival [11 – 15 Oct]. We proudly present a line up that is all-embracing and engaging, ranging from virtuoso oud playing, experimental electronica, to old and new Arab dance tunes and futurist Nubian beats. This event will take place at Roodkapje, literally a 3 min. walk from Rotterdam CS.

SUFYVN (SD)
Sufyvn is a Khartoum based Sudanese music producer who explores the diverse sounds of traditional Sudanese music. He uses vintage Sudanese instruments and merges them with modern textures and a strong rhythmic backbone similar to those found in electronic IDM and Hip-Hop contexts. Sufyvn’s signature sound is highlighted on the “Ascension EP” (2017), his most detailed work to date. This EP does not westernize Sudanese music, but instead takes it to new territories. “Ascension” is a visionary accomplishment that enabled Sufyvn to define his voice as a producer.

JAWA MANLA (SY)
Jawa Manla is a talented oud player from Syria who was born in Aleppo and grew up in Damascus. She started playing music at the age of eleven. Inspired by her father playing the oud, she decided to commit to the instrument. She went on to study music in Egypt in 2012 at the Beit El Oud institute under the supervision of the Iraqi oud player Naseer Shamma. In 2014 she received lessons in Istanbul by the Turkish oud player Nacati Celik. Since June 2015 she is based in the Netherlands which enables her to perform with many international musicians, not in the last place because of her studies at Codarts in Rotterdam.

DIRAR KALASH (Palestine)
Dirar Kalash is a sound artist whose uncompromising work spans a wide range of sonic practices. Dirar will perform with the oud combined with electronica, approaching the lute-type string instrument with different techniques in order to achieve a music that transcends the common notions of traditional oud playing. His approach repositions the oud within a context where it is considered not only as an instrument with a deep history, but also as a vehicle for further explorations of musical and sonic languages.

DUCKFOOD (NL | Rebel Up! / Pantropical)
Duckfood’s massive music collection absorbs anything from renaissance to Moroccan trance. His DJ selections are colourful and not hampered by any preoccupation about genre.

CHRISTIAN BAAS (NL | Pantropical)
Rotterdam based DJ with a fine eclectic taste. He played pantropical sets at a diverse range of events; with Mdou Moctar, DJ Tetris, DJ Bebedera, Gaye Su Akyol, Altin Gün, etc.
