Rebel Up! fusion Amsterdam < > Brussels

Hello all,

bit of news; our Rebel Up! dj compadre Riquetik is on his way to Budapest for the next 4 years and it is a real pity that we have to wave him goodbye for now.

A bit of new changes coming up on the Rebel Up! front as we try to keep it fresh both in Amsterdam and Brussels by letting in some new musical blood. After the summer, Rebel Up! will embrace the dj crew from Brussels Up! Soundsystem, which is Sebcat‘s global Brussels project that was started over a year ago with dj’s LeBlanc, Darcyr and Sonidero Quilombo. It will be much easier to continue under one name and from now on Rebel Up! will be more represented in Brussels besides Amsterdam so that we can keep on throwing good parties for you!

don’t forget, next Rebel Up! Soundclash will be saturday 25th of August @ OCCII Amsterdam, followed by saturday 27th october. More news soon!

Sat. 30 June > Rebel Up! Soundclash & A/V Club present global lo-fi night; Alvarius B (US) + Sublime Frequencies dj set & Riquetik’s goodbye party

Hello all!
Time for a fresh Rebel Up! Soundclash night again > a special globla lo-fi night together with the fine folks of A/V Club. We have Alan Bishop as a special guest, who will play his Alvarius B solo project and do a Sublime Frequencies dj set afterwards.  Sadly, it is also Riquetik’s goodbye party as he is leaving Rebel Up! & A’dam to go pursue his academic career in Budapest.

Here’s the roll > >

ALVARIUS B
Rare Acoustic Solo Performance (starts 23:30)
Alvarius B. is the acoustic guitar/singer-songwriter alias of Alan Bishop, a major player/seminal figure of the American underground – a founding member of Sun City Girls and the Sublime Frequencies record label (Omar Souleyman/Group Doueh/Group Inerane etc.). This project sees Alan unbalance and entertain using a twisted song cycle blend of humour, politics and heartbreak with melodies old, broken and new – a lethal cocktail for the senses.

SUBLIME FREQUENCIES DJ set
Sublime Frequencies is a record label and collective with explorers dedicated to focus on acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers.

REBEL UP! SOUNDCLASH CREW
Especially for this night, the Rebel Up! crew will play eclectic vintage & lo-fi sounds from all corners and ages of the globe, from folk to pop, psychedelica, rock and backwards. Accompanied by grainy, vintage visuals to make sure there’s never a dull moment on the dancefloor

Profits on the night will go to NGO Bhakti Luhur in Malang, Eastern Java, which takes care of handicapped children. One of the aid workers is a dutchman who runs the excellent Madrotter Treasure Hunt blog, all about Indonesian pop, rock and folk music from the past with quality uploads.

Helloooow,

poster design by Ness Verbeiren

On Friday the 11th o´may, the super special Cassette Connection tour kicks off in Belgium (Antwerp & Brussels) and followed by Amsterdam on Sunday with a limited set by Rebel Up! through the magical Indian tape collection of Sebcat.

Cassette Connection is a pure cassette tour with 3 specialised cassette dj`s playing their collections of colourful lo-fi tapes of (un)popular, vintage and folkloric music from different regions of the world; lo-fi folkpop, ethnic jewels & disco sounds from AFRICA – MIDDLE EAST and the INDIAN SUBCONTINENT.

Awesome Tapes from Africa (US)
After a stint in Ghana researching the local hip-hop movement, Brian Shimkovitz, a trained ethnomusicologist, has accumulated hundreds of cassette tapes of rare african music from Zimbabwe to Ethiopia to Senegal. He has been sharing his bounty through his popular blog Awesome Tapes From Africa, which he takes on the road as a DJ. His dj sets bring old and new music styles of the African continent together in one pure sound that will make you swing till you drop. Awesome Tapes From Africa is now also a label; the first release is a classic 1982 recording by Mali’s legendary diva, Nâ Hawa Doumbia

DJ Cinnamoon (ES)

sat. 25 Feb > Rebel Up! Soundclash *global psyche night* with special guest Arrington de Dionyso (US) @ OCCII, A’dam

Hello hello,

It has been a while since we sadly had to cancel our december night due to unforeseen reasons, but we’re back with fresh energies to give you a special night of Rebel Up! sounds. Not our Congolese rumba night as previously promised, that one will happen in June! This will be a *global psyche night*, meaning we will focus on experimental & improvised global sounds as well as vintage pop/rock spheres from the 60’s and 70’s from different corners of the world. Ofcourse we’ll also give you a nice dose of heavy bass deeper into the night to big up the Rebel Up! kaleidoscope.

We’re happy to announce our special American guest Arrington de Dionyso (ex-Old Time Relijun, the psychedelic krautrock band from overseas & Malaikat dan Singa) who will bring his trans-utopian throatsinging, bass clarinet, inspired by Indonesian trance music as a live improvisation of global psychedelic proportions. Be warned, his sound will go deep into your soul and liberate it with shamanic power. Check out his outerwordly sounds; www.arrington.bandcamp.com

Our second guest will travel from less far Brussels, Belgium. DJ Lowdjo is an eclectic wizard of the sort that totally fits the Rebel Up! mood and we’re also happy to have him joining our global cause of diasphoric sound. He will play special vintage sets of Thai folk funk and Turkish psychedelic rock straight out of his 45’s collection that will get everyone swinging. Check his active blog and mixcloud for some of his fine mixes.

As always, the Rebel Up! crew will play electic ethnic sound and everything in between to make you listen & dance while our visuals will make sure there’s never a dull moment on the dancefloor.

The charity of the night where we will donate our profits to is NGO Bhakti Luhur in Malang, Eastern Java, which takes care of handicapped children. One of the aid workers is a dutchman who runs the excellent Madrotter blog, all about Indonesian pop, rock and folk music from the past with quality uploads, though since the whole megaupload bust his blog has been relocated at Madrotter Treasure Hunt.

sat. 27th aug > Rebel Up! Soundclash @ OCCII, A’dam > Rebel Up! meets Bassculture crew

yeehawww.

time to kick off a new Rebel Up! Soundclash season at OCCII. From now on our parties will be once every 2 months instead of every month, just to keep it fresh and focused.

Coming saturday 27th, the Rebel Up! crew will meet the Bassculture crew from A’dam for a night of tropical bass, roots & funk, exotic folkpop and other vintage sounds to dance to. check the facebook event here.

Ofcourse our profits will go to a good charity as usual. With the heavy famine that is waging in the horn of Africa right now, we would like to raise emergency funds for the NGO SEED Samburu / Edukans. We also hope that everyone can donate whatever they can spare…it all helps!

A few weeks ago, the UN World Food programma decided to stop sending food reliefs to the tribal region of Central Sambura where the Samburu people live (a pastoral-nomadic tribe related to the Masai) and instead all food now goes to the refugee camps. It’s unfair that the UN turns their back on the Samburu and choose to let them starve. All the educational progress that has been made the past few years by NGO’s like Seed Samburu is on the point of being swooped away because without food, there is no education. Just 10 euro’s will already feed a Samburu child for a full month at school. This is the only daily meal they get as their own families are not able to feed them. Please give the Samburu kids a meal a day so that their life & education can continue!

If you are in Holland, you can also donate through this Edukans link or if you are elsewhere in the world, check the SEED Samburu site.
