In her sets, she blends sounds from various eras and areas, ranging from experimental, ethnical and underground music to dancefloor hits or even more poppy music – all of this depending on her mood, the context, place, public and the things she’s been listening to in that specific phase of her life. As long as the music touches us and makes us groove… No music purism here!

Fri 22 Feb > Rebel Up @ Studio Shap Shap *Sahel night* @ Recyclart, Bxl

a special *Sahel night* with with Studio Shap Shap (Niger)

6 musicians in the sand, under a straw roof. It is in the open air where Studio Shap Shap recorded their live album amidst bird cries and sounds from the capital city of Niamey, Niger. Traditional instruments (douma, talking drums, kindé, molo, komsa), electronic machines, bass, and piano intertwine with their sounds.

The band started off in 2015 as a project that was inspired by a new radio station in Niamey, which was searching for local musicians who could create 27 songs in three days for its broadcast programme. Studio Shap Shap are Oumarou Adamou (Niger), Boubacar Siddo Diallo (Niger), Seyni Halidou (Niger), Haruna Abdou (Niger), Christian Koulnodji (Chad) and Laetitia Cecile (Reunion Island). The six-piece ensemble is known for fusing traditional and contemporary beats, inspired by nature, the communities they live in and the band members’ historical backgrounds. Mixing nature and city, traditional and electro, speech and singing magnify the traditional instruments. Ancient knowledge to rely on and go beyond modernity for a true contemporary African sound. Despite the challenges, the group managed to independently release their debut album ‘Chateau I’. They have been busy recording their 2nd album which soon will be released. Travel with them into the modern sound of the Sahel!

Wedn 28 March > Rebel Up Nightshop DJ’s @ BCUC concert, Botanique Bxl

This wednesday evening, concert of South African activist band BCUC from Soweto at Botanique!

Artistic heirs to Philip “Malombo” Tabane and Batsumi, they seek to give a contemporary voice to the ancestral traditions of indigenous peoples. Like its elders, BCUC aka Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness sees its music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation.

It all started about twelve years ago in a community centre workshop. The format of the band hasn’t changed much since that time, but its musical language has been greatly refined. Their music has a main focus on strong vocals and heavy percussions. Jazz sounds of 1970s and ‘80s productions have been replaced by hip-hop influences and a punk-rock energy.

Their 1st album “Our Truth” on Nyami Nyami label was a firebomb debut and soon they will release their 2nd album “Emokhosini” on Buda Musique. Expect a very lively and powerful live show! Just see this video below > > >
