sat. 27th aug > Rebel Up! Soundclash @ OCCII, A’dam > Rebel Up! meets Bassculture crew

yeehawww.

time to kick off a new Rebel Up! Soundclash season at OCCII. From now on our parties will be once every 2 months instead of every month, just to keep it fresh and focused.

Coming saturday 27th, the Rebel Up! crew will meet the Bassculture crew from A’dam for a night of tropical bass, roots & funk, exotic folkpop and other vintage sounds to dance to. check the facebook event here.

Ofcourse our profits will go to a good charity as usual. With the heavy famine that is waging in the horn of Africa right now, we would like to raise emergency funds for the NGO SEED Samburu / Edukans. We also hope that everyone can donate whatever they can spare…it all helps!

A few weeks ago, the UN World Food programma decided to stop sending food reliefs to the tribal region of Central Sambura where the Samburu people live (a pastoral-nomadic tribe related to the Masai) and instead all food now goes to the refugee camps. It’s unfair that the UN turns their back on the Samburu and choose to let them starve. All the educational progress that has been made the past few years by NGO’s like Seed Samburu is on the point of being swooped away because without food, there is no education. Just 10 euro’s will already feed a Samburu child for a full month at school. This is the only daily meal they get as their own families are not able to feed them. Please give the Samburu kids a meal a day so that their life & education can continue!

If you are in Holland, you can also donate through this Edukans link or if you are elsewhere in the world, check the SEED Samburu site.

Sat. 30 july > Rebel Up! crew at Sfinks festival, Boechout (Antwerp)

hello hello,

this weekend (29th-31st) it’s time for Sfinks festival again in the green village of Boechout (Antwerp) and we’re invited to perform on the saturday! We’ll be playing our global mashed dance set in the main Concert Tent from 1:00 til 2:30 at night, right after our Colombian friends of Systema Solar and warming up for our buddy Munchi, yeah! Expect a heavy DJ & VJ set of cumbia bass, swinging soukous, unheard shangaan, krazy kuduro, kurdish hiphop, and other electro-folk styles together with colourful visuals.

We’ve made a promo mix for Sfinks, you can check & download it here!

With the heavy famine that is waging in the horn of Africa right now, we would like to raise emergency funds at the end of our Rebel Up! set. We will walk around with a donation box and we hope that everyone can donate whatever they can spare. All the proceedings will go to the NGO Seed Sambura in Kenya.

The Sfinks festival programme promises 3 days of good world music. On the Friday it’s a balkan theme with the music of movie director Emir Kusturica & The no smoking Orchestra and Robert Soko. Saturday has a fine lineup with Ayfer Düzdas (Kurdish folk), Lëk Sèn (Senegalese dancehall), Rubén Blades (spicy Panamese salsa), Alpha Blondy (African roots), Systema Solar (Colombian cumbia fusion), Munchi (fresh moombahton) and ofcourse our set to make you swing and dance, no doubt 😉 On the Sunday we can highly recommend Dikanda (Polish folk), Mamer (central asian folkpunk), Khaira Arby (Malinese desert funk, best show at recent All Tomorrow’s Parties!), Bomba Estéreo (more cumbia!), Hindi Zahra (Moroccan folk fusion) and Faiz ali Faiz (Pakistani qawwali). Also check out the Cabaña on sunday, where dj’s Polyesta and MPS Pilot will be spinning.

Weekendtickets are just 50€, 40€ for sat+sun or 25€ for one day. Buy your tickets in presale though, otherwise they cost 15-20€ more at the gate!

See you there,
Rebel Up! crew

2 Brussels nights coming up; thu 21st. july Rebel Up! Soundclash #4 @ Recyclart & fri 22nd july dj @ Bxl-Les-Bains/Brussel Bad

hah, it’s Belgian national holiday time this thursday, where every Belgian feels very proud of being a Belgian, ahum. and what will we do? play some non-western global music, yeah!
This 4th Rebel Up! night in Brussels will take us to another dimension; that of the internet and streaming music clips from far away parts of the world. Youtube a go go.

The music video/dvd/clip is currently thé most versatile medium in Africa, Asia and South America to spread music and culture. The growing access to internet in these part of the world has made it possible that more and more of these music clips find their way on Youtube so that even people here in the West can look and listen to music and artists from all corners of the world. The Rebel Up! dj`s will play a personal Youtube selection of unknown lo-fi pop, digital folk psyche clips straight out of this neverending treasure cave, all projected on a big screen (inside & outside) and in full sound.

Loyal to the Rebel Up! philosophy, this night is a fundraiser for a local, independent NGO: the Brussels foundation Les Petits Samurais, that offers basic help to children from immigrants who are without papers and without assured accomodation. The organisation will give a short presentation during this evening.
