Rebel Up Nightshop radio show, episode #61, as broadcasted in May 2019 via Radio Campus Bxl and Groovalizacion Radio. 3 songs of the day; an edit by producer M.Rux, inspired by a Moroccan gnawa folk song, a new tune by Kokoko! and a special song by La Reunion singer Maya Kamaty. 4 albums of the month: ‘Wasalala’ by Madalisto band from Malawi on Bongo Joe records, sweet polyphonic babatone music from southern Africa. Also new a compilation of live recordings made in Amsterdam venue OCCII, with a vibrant mix of African artists as well as free jazz and punk, a collaboration between OCCII, Rebel Up, Red Wig and Makkum records. New EP by Palestinian electronic duo Zenobia on the new Acid Arab label via Crammed Discs, electro dabke sounds and the new album by duo Grupo JeJeJe on Discos Rolas label, where futuristic sonidero cumbia from Mexico clashes with Egyptian, Mesopotamia and Aztec sounds. experimental Brussels folk

Duo made up of Léa Roger (Guili Guili Gulag / Félon) and Célia Jankowski (Vitas Guerulaïtis / Flies Rattle / collective H.A.K.). Influenced as much by traditional music as by experimental music, OSILASI creates a narration with extensible contours, playing on sound dynamics, rhythmic shifts and modulation in repetition. Their music oscillates between interiority and physicality, always in tension, always on the wire. “One can refer to a fine blend of post-velvet experimentation, spiritual free jazz, French folk prog and Malinese music, but that would equally distract one’s attention from their wild beauty and imagination.” (Kraak Festival)

on sunday evening, Rebel Up will play @ Fiesta Latino festival in Bois de la Cambre (Ixelles).

The festival starts on friday 25th and runs until 27th, where we will play at the closing night alongside the band Forro Mior, DJ Odilonn & Vincent Thekal and our buddy Rafael Aragon. on friday & saturday, our friends of Memo Pimiento, Kumbia Boruka, Arumbo and DJ Funky Bompa will play too!

Rebel Up , NGHE Mediatheque & Drache Musicale present Akuphone label estafette night in Niko Matcha & MIDPOINT CAFE & BAR (neighbour bars), starting in Niko Matcha, afterparty in Midpoint.

Akuphone is a french independant label focused on rare global pop and folk music from the early 1950’s to the late 1980’s, led by Cheb Gero (aka Fabrice Gery) and Tinmar (aka Martin Jay), both record collectors. The label is inspired by the need to release music that has not been released before to western audiences. It aims at linking these productions to their historical and political contexts, placing them back in the social and cultural conditions in which they emerged. Akuphone ambitions to promote “hyphenated music” and its diversity without emphasizing such ambiguous notions as intermixing and hybridity, which can be considered as commonly accepted stances tinted with eurocentrism.

Cheb Gero is a collector and a music enthusiast. After being a record dealer for many years, he launched the Akuphone label in an “archives” spirit and a desire to “explore the world in music”. In an approach to musical archeology, he seeks to highlight the work of artists, musicians, singers and singers who, in the so-called Western countries, are ignored or unknown Far from a romantic or fetishist view of extra-Western music, the label’s objective is to articulate these cultural productions with their historical and political context and to re-situate them in their social and cultural conditions of appearance.

Thu 4 August > Rebel Up! Soundclash summer night @ Bonnefooi Bxl

This Thursday 4 Aug, our Rebel Up! Soundclash night in Bonnefooi,
with 2 special guests from Argentina & Colombia with Barrio Lindo (AR) & Ephniko (CO).

It will be their first time playing in Brussels, for a late night session into afro latino & electro folklore flavours!

Barrio Lindo is the project of Augustine Rivaldo, luthier by trade. In 2012, after a stay of three years in Colombia, Augustine decided to explore the world of digital music influenced by South American folklore. It all begin after he participated in a workshop production of musical guided by fellow Argentinian musician Pedro Canale a.k.a. Chancha via Circuito (Crammed / Wonderwheel). Since then he has released two EP via Bad Panda Records: “Free” (Ep, 2013) “Respiratory System” (EP 2012) and a LP published by the Project label: “Mooncircle” (2014) in double cassette & vinyl format. He has also made two EPs in collaboration with Argentinian producer Barda and English producer El Buho called “History of Color” recently published by ZZK Records. He has performed in venues and festivals in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Brazil and the United States and will now play Brussels for the 1st time

Ephniko hails from Barranquilla, Colombia, via Miami, Ephniko is an emcee, songwriter, global funk selector and producer whose music is rooted in the repetitive groove of hiphop and bass while expanding into the unpredictably eclectic. As a selector Ephniko moves crowds by combining African roots music from around the world with the electromechanical vibrations of the first world inner cities where he found his musical voice. He baptized his style of global dance as “Soundcocho.” He has performed in multiple festivals and concerts from Miami, Caracas, New York City and San Francisco to Capetown and Thailand.
