Thu 18 Oct > Rebel Up & Babylon Trio @ La Bellevilloise, Paris (FR) w/ Akuphone label & Praed

Akuphone presents an evening dedicated to the new wave of contemporary Arabic music. Spearheading this music scene is the Lebanese band PRAED, who will play its contemporary cutting edge shaabi, with captivating psychedelic accents. For the first time in Paris, the young Iraqi/Brussels trio Babylon Trio will give a wild performance!

To complete the evening, Akuphone invites Brussels collective Rebel Up. Cheb Gero (Akuphone) and SebCat (Rebel Up) will share the decks in the first half of the evening for a set of various styles from choubi-choubi to dabke, electro shaabi, maghraganat, rai, reggada and beyond.

Praed (LB)
founded in 2006 by Raed Yassin and Paed Conca and is a group that explores popular Arabic music (or shaabi) and its interconnections with other psychedelic and hypnotic music genres, such as free jazz and psych-rock. Raed Yassin performs keyboards and vocals, Paed Conca, clarinet and electronic bass. The group performed during many festivals and toured Japan, Europe and Canada. Praed has developed an international network of famous musicians, raising musical collaboration to the umpteenth square. Their next album will be released on the Akuphone label next year.

Ko Shin Moon

* Analog synthesizers, drum Machines & Oriental lutes *
Mixing instrumental and digital compositions, contemporary electronic sounds, traditional music and samples from field recordings, Ko Shin Moon blurs all the boundaries. Soundtrack of a patchwork crossing, the first LP of the group, released on the label Akuphone, transports the listener to hybrid territories, fantasy soundscapes and colorful collages. The time of a break, reversing analogical listening in digital synthesis, this funny duo turns the listener into a dancer on an Algerian acid, an electric belly dance, the Greek psyche, the Turkish disco, the Lebanese trap , Thai dance or Lao shoegaze.

Samcha (L’Oreille Percée)
Samcha aka L’Oreille Percée collects, collects and, as far as possible, informs the musical media of Thailand, Indonesia, Japan or the Chinese diaspora with a singular detour for Cote d’Ivoire. Ethnologist in partnership with Khun Narin Sin Phin Prayuk during his extra-Asian excursions, this Pierced Ear seeks to trace an itinerary for the ear which, beyond the West, probes music publishing around the world. Listening to what others are listening to, without prejudging what they love, who they are, here is a program that it becomes, today more than ever, possible to achieve.

Cheb Gero
Passionate about music and incorrigible collector, Cheb Gero, clears and digs the musical worlds. In 2015, in an “archive” spirit and driven by a desire to “explore the world in music”, he launched Akuphone. In an approach related to musical archeology, he seeks to highlight the work of artists, musicians, singers and singers who, in the so-called Western countries, are unknown or have fallen into the oversight. Far from a romantic or fetishistic vision of non-Western music, the goal of the label is to articulate these cultural productions to their historical and political context and to restore them in their social and cultural conditions of appearance.

Sat 29/04 > Rebel Up @ Akuphone label estafette @ Niko Matcha + Café Midpoint

Rebel Up , NGHE Mediatheque & Drache Musicale present Akuphone label estafette night in Niko Matcha & MIDPOINT CAFE & BAR (neighbour bars), starting in Niko Matcha, afterparty in Midpoint.

Akuphone is a french independant label focused on rare global pop and folk music from the early 1950’s to the late 1980’s, led by Cheb Gero (aka Fabrice Gery) and Tinmar (aka Martin Jay), both record collectors. The label is inspired by the need to release music that has not been released before to western audiences. It aims at linking these productions to their historical and political contexts, placing them back in the social and cultural conditions in which they emerged. Akuphone ambitions to promote “hyphenated music” and its diversity without emphasizing such ambiguous notions as intermixing and hybridity, which can be considered as commonly accepted stances tinted with eurocentrism.

Cheb Gero (Akuphone)
Cheb Gero is a collector and a music enthusiast. After being a record dealer for many years, he launched the Akuphone label in an “archives” spirit and a desire to “explore the world in music”. In an approach to musical archeology, he seeks to highlight the work of artists, musicians, singers and singers who, in the so-called Western countries, are ignored or unknown Far from a romantic or fetishist view of extra-Western music, the label’s objective is to articulate these cultural productions with their historical and political context and to re-situate them in their social and cultural conditions of appearance.
