Another Rebel Up! Soundclash night coming up with a sweet line up of afrolicious guests.

East London musician A.J.Holmes is the founding member & singer of The Hackney Empire band, who play a marriage of afro-pop and soukous paired with traditional pop sensibilities as a serious warm vibe. A.J. learned to play African *palm wine* guitar music from Folo Graff who played with Sierra Leonese legend S.E. Rogie (the king of palm wine guitar music) and from that moment on he got totally sucked into African music which also resulted into co-organising the succesfull Secousse club nights of tropical madness in London together with global electronic duo Radioclit (M.I.A., The Very Best, Amadou & Mariam). On this night he will play a solo palm wine guitar set as warmup, followed by a super special set with guitar & dj decks at the same time for a unique approach of his mixed African sound. dj Alex Figueira, born in Venezuala with Brazilian roots, has a BIG passion for vinyl; he is the co owner of the Vintage Voudou vinyl shop in A’dam, a grand collector of vintage African and Latin vinyls, runs the Music With Soul label and plays in the bands Fumaça Preta & Conjunto Papa Upa. This passionate spinning man will sure make you bounce & swing with his special delicious selections from the tropics. and oh, it’s his birthday party!!!

the Contrabanda world night offers an excellent live band and dj’s to keep the party going the whole night. Live band of the night: East London musician A.J. Holmes (Hackney Empire) plays a marriage of afro-pop and soukous paired with traditional pop sensibilities and will play a special solo set in Bonnefooi on guitar, voice and dj decks at the same time for a unique approach to the swinging African sound. this Friday our good female friends from Nantes-annex-Bruxelles are organising their first Tropical Boobs party @ le Metro Valdi -yes, they named it that in female self-sexist power stylee- a night filled with global bass sounds, juke, trap, dubstep, italo disco and whatnot @ Metro Valdi (15 Rue des Poissonniers) Bxl city centre near Beurs/Bourse.

Rebel Up! dj’s Sebcat & Leblanc will be spinning a heavy selection of global tunes. Leblanc will go deep into Africa with fast urban kuduro, kwaito house and some streetwise Mexican sonidero cumbia, while Sebcat will turn to Caribbean ways with the newest and roughest Karnival sounds from Haiti, Brazilian tecnomelody swing and some tecnofolk tunes from Syria & Egypt.

Joined by guest dj’s from Nantes DJ FI$H€RPRIC€ & $TRAPONTIN and Brussels immigrants RICO MEDEIROS (DRACHE MUSICAL/BXL) and VJ FLANDERS. Gonna be a hot night!

Hello all!

Hope you had a good summer holiday where it might have taken you. Oh boy, it’s been roasty warm and sunny here the last few weeks. Time for another Rebel Up! Soundclash and we’ll keep it hot with some tropical Afro-Caribbean action with live Surinami band Lobi Firi and Ozzie global guest dj Unsoundbwoy from Melbourne.

Surinami band Lobi Firi will play their very special kaseko funk and kawina sound, impossible not to dance til you sweat! The band will start around midnight, so get in on time.

Unsoundbwoy will play a grinding selection between heavy dancehall and african electronic dance music, kuduro and more. Check some of his excellent mixes and mashups!

And the some, ofcourse the Rebel Up! dj’s will never miss out on a good Soundclash party. Expect a steady selection of unknown global tunes filled with sweet melodies for the ear or bouncing bass for the body. Watch out that you don’t get wrongfooted playing hopscotch with these onorthodox boy scouts.

Any profit on the night will go to NGO Bhakti Luhur in Eastern Java, which takes care of handicapped children. One of the aid workers is a dutchman who runs the excellent Madrotter Treasure Hunt blog, all about Indonesian pop, rock and folk music.
