Yo folks!

This thursday 19 nov Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band in OCCII, Amsterdam! His shows in Gent and Brussels were simply amazing, so we can recommend you to see them and get wild!

Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band
are a contemporary group from Burkina Faso. Coming from Bobo-Dioulasso, the group is steeped in the Mandingue musical traditions of their ancestral legacy. The enigmatic lead singer Baba Commandant (Mamadou Sanou) is an original and eccentric character who is well respected in the Burkinabé musical community. A sort of punk Faso Dan Fani activist for traditional Mandingo music, Baba continues to redefine the boundaries between traditional and modern. In 1981, he joined the Koule Dafourou troupe as a dancer. Later, he embarked on his current musical direction as a singer first in Dounia and then in the Afromandingo Band. His current band — when he’s not playing with the now-famous Burkinabé musician Victor Démé — is the Mandingo Band. At present, he is a practitioner of the Afrobeat style, drawing inspiration from the golden era of Nigerian music. Fela Kuti/Africa 70 and King Sunny Adé are big influences, as is the legendary Malian growler Moussa Doumbia. Baba plays the ngoni, the instrument of the Donso (the traditional hunters in this region of Burkina Faso and Mali). His audience comprises multiple generations and strata of Burkinabé society; he accordingly adapts his repertoire to his surroundings, which range from cabaret Sundays in Bobo-Dioulasso to the sound systems of Ouagadougou and are a formidable force steeped in Ouagadougou’s DIY underground musical culture. Juguya is their sound. Listen here >

lahcen akil
Lahcen Akil was born in 1969 in the village of Tamlalte on the route of the thousand Kasbahs in the Moroccan High Atlas. Influenced by acoustic music and traditional Amazigh songs, he started music very young. As songwriter and poet, he writes songs about the beauty of the region which he plays on a self-made 5-stringed lothar lute, composed of a wooden handle, a palm soundboard and goatskin. Lahcen is joined by fellow villager and percussionist El Houssain Safir who plays the bendir, a traditional drum with vibrating snare. For the occasion, two more musicians come along: the bassist David and accordionist Matthieu. Be ready for a compelling evening of raw Amazigh roots out of one of the most beautiful regions in the world!

Fri 19 June @ OCCII, Amsterdam > Rebel Up! Soundclash / OK IN KO OUT present: Akounak movie premiere (tuareg music film) + Mdou Moctar concert + djs

19 juni mdou moctar
Amsterdam!

This friday another special Rebel Up! Soundclash & OK IN KO OUT collab night in OCCII.
Showing the movie ‘Akounak’, followed by a concert of Niger tuareg band Mdou Moctar and the Rebel Up! & Sahel Sounds dj’s

Mdou Moctar  – concert
In the somewhat crowded scene of Tuareg guitarists, Mdou stands apart from his peers. One of the few original singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre, his unconventional styles have won him accolades both in Niger and abroad.

Mdou Moctar hails from Abalak, in the Azawagh desert of Niger. He taught himself the guitar at a young age on a homemade instrument. Inspired by returning Ishumar, Mdou traveled the road to Libya where he traveled and worked odd jobs. As chance had, he would meet some of the now famous guitarists and further his musical studies. He returned home with a guitar and a dream.

Rising to the status as local celebrity, in 2008 he traveled to Nigeria to record his first album “Anar” – a psychedelic electronic album of Tuareg guitar, became an instant success throughout the mp3 networks of West Africa. “Tahoultine,” one of the standout tracks, was later featured on the compilation “Music from Saharan Cellphones.” In 2013, he released his first international album, “Afelane,” rocking and raw sessions recorded live at his hometown in Niger. He is currently in production in the first ever Tuareg language film, a fictional story of the struggle of a guitarist trying to make it against all odds in Agadez.

Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It (Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai)
Feature | NR | 75 | DIRECTOR: Christopher Kirkley

Prince goes Sahel in this colorful homage to Purple Rain. Set among the sub-Saharan Tuareg people, and reputedly the first feature film in their Tamashek language (which has no word for “purple,” hence the title). Resplendent in a purple robe and matching chopper, smoking hot guitarist Mdou Moctar arrives in a music-mad Niger town and sets about wooing a local beauty, clashing with his pious father, and fencing with the jealous king of the local scene (Kader Tanoutanoute, as wily and dapper as Morris Day) until their climactic six-string shootout.

Starring guitarist Mdou Moctar, Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It (Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai) is a feature length fiction film, shot entirely in Agadez, Niger. Akounak tells the universal story of a musician trying to make it “against all odds,” set against the backdrop of the raucous subculture of Tuareg guitar. The protagonist, real life musician Mdou Moctar, must battle fierce competition from jealous musicians, overcome family conflicts, and endure the trials of love – all while coming to terms with one of the biggest barriers: himself.

Both a homage to Purple Rain and The Harder They Come, Akounak is based on the universal hero, the struggle of a musician to overcome a series of conflicts. In execution, many techniques have been adapted from Poverty Row, Italian Neo-Realism, and the experimental films of Jean Rouch. While there are a plethora of films concerning the Tuareg guitar, all are documentaries. Akounak is the first fiction film to explore the scene in this format, and the first film in the Tuareg language of Niger.

Fri 24 April > Rebel Up! Soundclash & Miaaauw Soundz present; The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band @ OCCII, Amsterdam

11079603_814874351941334_6586580183288662524_n(1)

The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band
The band plays vintage molam music from Isan, in the North-East of Thailand, with a 21st century twist. Featuring Kammao Perdtanon on phin (Thai lute), Sawai Kaewsombat on khaen, a type of bamboo harmonica, and backed by Piyanart Jotikasthira on bass, Phusana Treeburut on drums and Chris Menist on percussion the band have just completed a successful 2nd tour of Europe. Whilst based on the traditional molam sounds of Isan, the band also draw out the trance-like qualities of the music be it the repeated motifs of ‘Sao Sa Kit Mae’ lead by Sawai’s ethereal khaen, or the driving grooves of ‘Lam San Disco’ where Kammao’s psyched out phin comes to the fore. Rooted in tradition yet with an eye to the future, The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band have already made waves on the live stage, and their first studio recording very much continues in the same vein. Chris Menist and Maft Sai are also behind the highly acclaimed ‘The Sound of Siam’ compilations on Soundway Records, as well as releases for Finders Keepers, Light In The Attic and their own Paradise Bangkok label.

10917902_777020035726766_928199350102673820_nDIY upcycled street orchestra from Kinshasa, Congo | Congotronics | “thumb piano”

This monday 23 Feb in OCCII, Amsterdammie!!!!!!!!!!

Konono N°1’s “Congotronics” album introduced the world to the strange and spectacular electro-traditional mixtures which are being concocted in the suburbs of Kinshasa, Congo. World music, electronica and avant-rock aficionados have all been equally amazed by this otherworldly music, which has driven the international press to come up with some surprising comparisons (from Can and Krautrock to Jimi Hendrix, Lee Perry and proto-techno!…).
The band was founded back in the 1960s by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called “sanza” or “thumb piano”, consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band’s line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There’s also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones.

Wed 3 Dec > Ogoya Nengo & Dodo Women group in OCCII, Amsterdam!

ogoyaoccii

On wednesday 3 Dec, another great Rebel Up! concert night in OCCII, Amsterdam
with Ogoya Nengo & Dodo Women group playing!!!!

Ogoya Nengo (in drawing above) is on her 1st tour outside of Kenya. Born in the 1930s in a small village at the shores of Lake Victoria, she soon joined the socially critical Dodo singers, a genre and community which is in danger of vanishing. Ogoya became the rave of her time, singing to great chiefs, warriors and even colonial officers and missionaries. Despite Ogoya being a legendary Kenyan folk artist with a career spanning over three decades little people outside Kenya have had the chance of ever hearing her and her ensemble. Ogoya Nengo’s approach to Dodo, a genre which is in danger of vanishing, is a very personal one: Her music is characterized by her powerful, passionate and compelling voice and is as timeless as it is mystical. Obviously Ogoya is a legendary Kenyan folk artist who has had an immense career spanning over three decades, but due to limited resources her music has remained in her region, and not many outsiders did have the pleasure of hearing her yet.
Her album has just been released on the Honest Jon’s label.
