Thu 30 June > Rebel Up! @ Amsterdam Roots Festival / Rest Is Noise night, Muziekgebouw, A’dam

img25015_75

Hello Amsterdam!

This thursday 30 june, Rebel Up! will be playing once again at Amsterdam Roots Festival, this time at the grand Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ.  *A remix of modern en traditional music from Marrakech* is the theme of the night, hosted by Rest Is Noise, What Design Can Do & Rebel Up! as part of the Amsterdam Roots festival, with special international Moroccan guests Officerfishdumplings and Dakka Chrafoo. Much to look forward to!

Behind the pseudonym officerfishdumplings is the Moroccan-American musician, DJ and multimedia artist Hatim Belyamani. He is the founder of remix <- -> culture, an art collective that connects traditional music to digital remix art. Officerfishdumplings is the musical expression of this collective and what Belyamani does is quite original. In search of his property and the Moroccan musical roots he regularly travels to Morocco to record local groups. With this raw material he creates his amazing audio visual remixes.

The Dutch-Moroccan percussion group Dakka Chrafoo plays traditional music from Marrakech. They play Dakka Marrakchia: a popular music with lots of upbeat percussion, punishment clapping and piercing wind.

The DJs of RebelUp! will frame the musical evening with catchy pearls from the ‘rougher sounds from the global underground.

Wedn 4 May: Egyptian / Turkish concert night @ OCCII, Amsterdam

occiiposter_invisible-hands_www-1

a special Egyptian / Turkish concert night of friends @ OCCII supported by Rebel Up, even though we won t be there due to travel (Peru) and work.

The Invisible Hands (EG)

is the English translation of the band’s original Egyptian Arabic name: El Ayadi El Khafeyya. A band created amidst an unusual backdrop by Alan Bishop (AKA Alvarius B., member of legendary US band Sun City Girls and co-owner of the world famous Sublime Frequencies label), with Cairo-based musicians Cherif El Masri, Aya Hemeda, Adham Zidan and Magued Nagati. Songs – sung in Arabic, English, or whichever language they channel – are drenched in lovely psychedelic folk arrangements and vocal choruses with a nod to what could have potentially been music that surfaced decades ago but instead found its way into the future. The group was established during the summer of 2011. Their debut was recorded in Cairo in May 2012, and two versions were released, one in Arabic and another in English, with both on a limited edition double LP. Their second album, Teslam, is currently out on CD with the LP being released in December.
Hayvanlar Alemi (TR)

is a psychedelic folk rock band founded in Ankara. They got together in secondary school in 1999, when they were 14. Classical rock and heavy metal were big influences on teenagers in Ankara then, and they started their musical venture playing hard-and-heavy covers, but very soon self-discovered free improvisation and moved into a more avant-garde approach, and later on occasionally deployed traditional instruments, found-sound elements like live radio, and colorful stage theatrics. They were influenced by the new folk-infused experimental rock scene of the late 90s Istanbul, but isolated from any music scene in Ankara, their sound and song-structure diverged from their contemporaries as they incorporated elements from the findings of their musical research into their sound, which included folk, pop and hybrid sounds of South East Asia, East and West Africa, South America and Russia, as well as Jamaican dub reggae and Californian surf.

They are not satanic, they just make God cry.
They don’t play samba, they decompose samba.
They are not a trio, they are a quintet.
So definitely, they are Satanique Samba Trio!
Imagine Tom Zé without vocals!! Or Captain Beefheart in a Brazilian mood!!!

SATANIC SAMBA TRIO was founded in 2002 with the sole purpose of posing as an idiosyncratic force on Brazilian Music landscape (hence, the reference to the word “Satan”, a derivation of the Hebrew expression shaitan, which in turn can be translated as “the adversary” or “stray”). Two years later, the quintet – not actually a trio – released their debut EP, MISANTROPICALIA.
In 2007, the band unearthed the critically acclaimed LP SANGROU, which led its way into Concerts on Brazilian Soil that also featured names as big as Tom Zé and Naná Vasconcelos. After a 3 year-long recording hiatus, as they toured around Brazil (big country, you know the drill), BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #2 was released with undeniable success. The “putrefaction trilogy” had just started: BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #1 from 2011 (yep, one year AFTER #2) and BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #3 (2013) would eventually follow the conceptual path of decay. By the earlier months of 2014, the band put together a digital compilation called BADTRIPTYCH (Far Out Recordings – UK) intended to lump up the “catchier” songs from the aforemented trilogy. Still in the wake of a creative spike, the quintet (remember: not a trio) released a 7-inch (45 RPM) vinyl record called MÓ BAD on 2015. Now they might be hitting your shores.
If you ever wanted to know how traditional brazilian music would sound if it went absolutely bonkers, Satanique Samba Trio is the fastest and coolest way find it out.
