New EP by Muito Kaballa Power Ensemble – Curupira

‘Curupira’ is the 2nd single by German jazz ensemble Muito Kaballa Power Ensemble as part of their upcoming album ‘Mamari’ on 28 May. Curupira is a mythological creature that was known for being able to communicate with the inhabitants of the forest, notably alarming them about danger.

The song starts with the sounds of an awakening rainforest slowly flowing into a lively groove of the jungle, that musically depicts all its power and diversity. However, the forest is burning and we are calling Curupira to come help us. The Baritone solo depicts the arrival of the demonic figure. The jungle sounds appear again but are quickly drowned out by the arrival of humans and the sounds of machines cutting the trees. Vocals and spoken word by Nora Beisel.

The remix by German-Ghanaian producer Lee Bass (Gato Preto) takes Curupira to a different level. The drop is definitely another wake up call. While making you dance, the remix puts the message right to the front alarming the listener about the ecological collapse.

This single serves as a fundraiser to support a reforestation project in Brazil – Resgate Climático. To actively protect and reforest land in Bahia that once used to be pristine rainforest. Under the current political circumstances and the record wildfires in the country, their work has become more important than ever.

new Rebel Up Nightshop show #74 > July, between Africa and beyond

This month of July we have a 3,5 hours long Nightshop show, 9 albums of the month and new songs, with a big focus on music from Africa. Starting with songs of the day; COVID-19 kologo music from Ghana (Ayuune Sule), and jazz from International Anthem label (by Anteloper and Angel Bat Dawid). It gets more percussive and electronic with albums by Malawi ritual drumming group Doctor Kanuska Group (1000Hz), Ugandan heavy electro tribalism by Nihiloxica (Crammed Discs), Portuguese percussive dub band HHY & the Macumbas (Nyege Tapes), deep Congolese futurism by Bantou Mentale (Glitterbeat) and a Dutch-Sierre Leone EP by producer Ramses3000 (Intercept) and Nigerian female rapper Aunty Razor (Blanc Manioc). tune in!

SPIRITCZUALIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER (Akuphone)
Giving birth via impromptu instrumentals to glimpses of synchronistic magic, these Spiritczualics remain agnostic: are they magicians, or merely charlatans?
Spiritczualic Enhancement Center is an outernational movement.
A traveling nexus collecting dozens of participants to explore alchemical realms of sonic ritualism. Fusing DIY electronics with experimental improvisation and traditional instruments, recurring collaborators have studied under masters of Andalusian music, ethno-music research as well as important underground venues in Berlin and Hamburg’s musical scenes. Visual artist Dima Rabik contributes his miniature ink drawing style to all Spiritczualic releases – as well as a live-drawing projection during performances.

Spiritczualic (“cz” borrowed from the Polish / tʂ / hard “tch”) – a word-melange of “ritczualic” and spiritual, reflects upon the ancient practice of musical ritualism. As an idea, it greatly predates the physical occurrence of the Enhancement Center – on Christmas 2017, when an Ottoman building below the Gates of Jerusalem provided itself for a remarkable meeting. The trespassing people who happened to be there – admittingly bizarre participants synchronized by state-of-mind rather than tune or scale – began exploring sonic sessions of do-it-yourself mysticism. Witnesses of its ritualistic gatherings have indeed reported moments of divination – and possibly sorcery. This raises the question, will the audience once again behold the allurement of Higher Sources – or rather testify to trickery.“

Friday 23 Nov > Rebel Up @ concert night in BRASS w/ Los Orioles + Spiritczualic Enhancement Center, Bxl

Concert night on friday in BRASS cultural centre in Forest.
2 bands on the programme and 2 dj’s!

Los Orioles (CH)
Like a gang roaming the world, the seven Swiss musicians of Los Orioles seem to have used wherever they went: the cumbia in Colombia, the dub in Jamaica, the rhythms and the guitars of West Africa, but also the most alternative whimsical francophone songs (we think of the Brigitte Fontaine / Areski Belkacem duo). Sung, rapped or declaimed lyrics that wander in an endless reverb amidst a precious selection of grooves from around the world.

Spiritczualic Enhancement Center (DE/IS)

In their physical form, their existence lasted only two weeks, confined in an abandoned Ottoman building, at the foot of the walls of ancient Jerusalem. Today in exile, the Spiritczualic Enhancement Center is a free-beat resonance field, an evolving and eclectic set of different cities and countries – they prefer the term ‘international’.
In concert, four to ten musicians play a strange and ritual instrumental music, based on spontaneity and improvisation. After a series of concerts at the Fusion Festival (Germany), Outernational Days (Bucharest) and at the New Hamburg Festival, as well as in various concert venues in Europe, they have just announced three upcoming releases: ‘Transporting Salt’ on the American label Crash Symbols; ‘Who Corrupted Our Wave, Back in 1969?’ on the post-Babylonian label Kinship; and a vinyl, ‘Me and My Students Have Reached Higher Levels’ on the Paris label Akuphone, scheduled for early 2019.

+ DJ sets by Bxl dj’s Rebel Up SebCat & Viktor French
