yes, this weekend, festival season fever has kicked off.

On friday, a triple city programme of Rebel Up & Babylon Trio spread over Brussels, Genk and Gent.

starting at Couleur Cafe, where Rebel Up, Drache Musicale and Le Grand Mechant Loop will play together 3 evenings in a row from 18h until 1am at the secret Drasch bar. Think you can find us? 😉 On friday and saturday night Rebel Up LeBlanc spins and Rebel Up SebCat on sunday.

Meanwhile in Genk (Limburg), Babylon Trio will play a live show before BaBa Zula and Omar Souleyman.

and that same friday evening, Rebel Up SebCat will spin from midnight til 2am at Copacobana festival in Gent (St Amandsberg) at Het Kasteel stage. Also a free festival and a great lineup.

saturday early evening, Babylon Trio will play at Ottertrotter festival in Mechelen, another free festival! see event here.

also saturday night, Memo Pimiento plays a live set in Brugge at the Signaal Radiofestival. Find them at 22h at the outdoor stage at Villa Bota.

This friday, concert of trio Sakili, acoutstic sega & tambour music from the Indian ocean!

Sakili’s music reflects the history of Rodrigues Island, combining European and African influences: waltz, polka, mazurka, schottische, they all blend harmoniously to the rhythms of sega drumming, traditional from the times of African slaves. Moreover, as globalization also influences the vast expanses of the Indian Ocean, there are of course, in some of the songs, elements of overlap with the western world or more recent preoccupations.

The Creole sega is sensual music and dance, with African influences, which was, in origin, a cultural form of resistance by slaves against the colonial rulers, but the culture turned little by little into a ritual that has in the end become rooted in tradition and lastingly incorporated in the way of life. The style of performance, sega drumming, is a vibrant mixture of music, consisting mainly of percussion, sin or status.

The Trio Sakili comprises three major ambassadors of Rodrigues sega: Vallen Pierre Louis is a banjoist well known and highly appreciated on the island. Francis Prosper belongs to one of the most important musical clans of the island and is without any doubt the best traditional percussionist and provides, with his warm timbre, the powerful voice of Sakili. Third in the line-up, Ricardo Legentile plays the accordion, the leading local melodic instrument, a heritage of the multiple influences on the island. The repertoire and the subtleties of his playing technique have been handed down from father to son for several generations of the family, while his mother, Yolande Legentile, belongs to the famous singers, the Mareshals of Sega in Rodrigues.

Fri 19 Oct > Rebel Up Records album release party Marockin’ Brass @ Met X, Les Marolles Bxl

Rebel Up is proud to present their 7th release > the album release party of Brussels/Moroccan gnawa jazz band Marockin’ Brass, who will present their new album ‘Beats & Pieces’ for the first time during an in-house concert at MetX in les Marolles!  and what better > FREE IN!

Marockin’ Brass is the brainchild band of jazz composer/music maker Luc Mishalle, together with Brussels Moroccan musicians such as Maalem Driss Filali (guimbri, vocals), Abdessamad Semlali and Badr Derras, aided by percussionist Roel Poriau (Think of One / Antwerp Gyspy Ska Orchestra) and Tunisian electronic beatmaker Sofyann Ben Youssef (Kel Assouf, Ammar808). Also this big band is aided by Brussels multicultural musicians Esinam Dogbatse, Jean-Paul Estievenart, Veronique Delmelle, Pascal Rousseau, Jean Gnonlonfoun and a string of guest musicians.

Expect some steaming gnaoua or sweaty shaabi-funk accompanied by some redhot brass and free flowing jazz that will blow the sand out of your ears!

Hello Brussels rebels,

If you have not yet been to the refugee camp at Parc Maximilien (Gare du Nord), do visit and feel welcome to help out if you have some free time. Volunteers are always needed for many different things, from kitchen to cleaning to construction to animation. Check the Platforme Citoyenne De Soutien Aux Refugies Bruxelles on Facebook.

This saturday evening Rebel Up! is helping with organising a musical evening for & by the musicians of the refugee camp (from Syria, Iraq, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Eritrea etc), followed by a afterparty with music from the camp inhabitants. See FB event here.

We are still looking for instruments to borrow; especially percussion, keyboards, djarbouka´s or Arab instruments such as Oud lutes etc. Also microphones, stands and cables are in high demand. And on friday or saturday we need some help constructing a small stage as well, so join up if you like. contact us at rebeluppa -at- gmail.

On Sunday there is the Car-Free Sunday in all of Brussels and let’s celebrate that with music and bike action.
In Schaarbeek at Avenue Louis Bertrand (next to Parc Josaphat), there will be the *Schaarbeek Village* street party with concerts, theatre, food, repair café, Pro velo, workshops and green infostands. Between all this, dj sets by Rebel Up! SebCat, Jean Mikili & Matamore.

and straight after at 17:00, another DJ party at the Refugee Camp at Parc Maximilien, again with folk dance selections played by the refugees. Last night was just amazing, such a wild party atmosphere and after this session we just need to do a 2nd session.
