this thursday, a special Akwaaba Soundsystem night hosted by Rebel Up! & Lowup, with special guest BBrave straight from Ghana!

Dj BBrave alias Benjamin Lebrave is the man behind Akwaaba Music – THE label to promote all kinds of new African electronic dance music from the source. Since a few years, the label is running from Accra, Ghana and it’s aim is to support young & upcoming musicians. There will be Coupé Décalé! Hiplife! Azonto! Kuduro! Naija! Don’t know any?! The Out Loud! festival kicks off this week and runs until the end of June in the Beursschouwburg, central Brussels., all nights FREE IN!
this Friday 6 June, Rebel Up! is playing at a special night as part of the Out Loud! festival together with Colombian psychedelic cumbia band Meridian Brothers, Canadian duo Phédre and we were also able to invite Brooklyn dj Geko Jones to play along with us!

avant-garde pop by Canadian duo Daniel & April from Toronto in the vein of Ariel Pink & John Maus with pulsating beats and melancholic synths.

Meridian Brothers
This experimental Colombian band injects a heavy dose of psychedelica into their pure latino sound through moog synthesizers, warbled voices and comical tongue-in-cheek lyrics. You will never have heard such subversive cumbia and salsa for a truly delerious tropical atmosphere as experienced last year at their live shows in Recyclart and Bar du Matin. If you have not seen them before, do not miss this!

MONOPHONIC is a festival of radiophonic creations taking place at Halles de Schaerbeek. Ateliers Claus is organizing the opening event for them. It was and is a true battle to find links and crosses with the festival in order to program acts in their esprit.

This coming friday 16 May, Pantropical organises a super special Congolese night in Worm are totally psyched to finally be able to host a rare LIVE show by Color Rumba! They are masters at playing classic Congolese rumba soukous from the sixties to the eighties; super infectious and dancable music! Some of their bandmembers performed with famous Congolese bands such as Franco’s Orchestre T.P.O.K. Jazz, Zaiko Langa Langa and Demba. Don’t miss out on this one!

• Yan Koy & COLOR RUMBA (RDC/BE)
This band’s mastery of the Congolese soukous from the 1960s to 1980s will bring you to dance! Rumba is a genre of dance music that originated from Cuban Rumba in the Belgian and French Congo during the 1940s and later garnered popularity throughout Africa, followed by the Soukous style with a more modern upbeat sound from the late 70’s onwards. Led by singer Yan Koy, Color Rumba is a band with a revolving cast of members such as luminaries Petit Poisson (guitar), Pappy Muntu (bass), Alonzo Baba (drums) and others who played in famous Congolese bands like Franco’s TPOK Jazz and Zaiko Langa Langa. In their two hour live set, Color Rumba will take you to the Congolese nirvana of tropical rock with beautifully cascading, sparkling guitar melodies, a super tight and hypnotic rhythm section and polyphonic vocals. Absolutely essential!

• ALEX FIGUEIRA (VE – Vintage Voudou, Music with Soul)
Venezolan/Portugese Alex Figueira is a pleasantly obsessed vinyl junkie, label man, musician and dj. He is a true music specialist on afro-venezuelan culture and runs the Vintage Voudou vinyl shop in the midst of Amsterdam’s red light district; a treasure trove of obscure 2nd hand tropical gems. Alex also puts out 45’s on his label Music With Soul and plays in the bands Papa Upa and Fumaça Preta. At Pantropical, Alex will spin the dopest African and Caribbean music. Raw but dancable stuff, vinyl only!

Wilders en zijn stomme rechtuit racistische uitspraken, wat moet je ermee? Het gewoon positief omdraaien met een muzikaal gevulde avond en een middelvinger naar hem en zijn achterban.
