The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band
The band plays vintage molam music from Isan, in the North-East of Thailand, with a 21st century twist. Featuring Kammao Perdtanon on phin (Thai lute), Sawai Kaewsombat on khaen, a type of bamboo harmonica, and backed by Piyanart Jotikasthira on bass, Phusana Treeburut on drums and Chris Menist on percussion the band have just completed a successful 2nd tour of Europe. Whilst based on the traditional molam sounds of Isan, the band also draw out the trance-like qualities of the music be it the repeated motifs of ‘Sao Sa Kit Mae’ lead by Sawai’s ethereal khaen, or the driving grooves of ‘Lam San Disco’ where Kammao’s psyched out phin comes to the fore. Rooted in tradition yet with an eye to the future, The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band have already made waves on the live stage, and their first studio recording very much continues in the same vein. Chris Menist and Maft Sai are also behind the highly acclaimed ‘The Sound of Siam’ compilations on Soundway Records, as well as releases for Finders Keepers, Light In The Attic and their own Paradise Bangkok label.

Fri 17 april, LAST Rebel Up! Soundclash @ De Vinger, Den Haag

11080354_1050914624924763_2440311213206040541_o

Hi Up! Everyone,

Sadly, this is our LAST EVER party night at De Vinger, as it soon will be closed and demolished, what a shame 🙁

We will be joined by our new Rebel Up! member DJ DUCKFOOD who will Heat Up the dancefloor for you to freely run, jive, and just dance for the hell of it. As usual, expect a fine Rebel Up! mix of old and gritty tunes with newer weirder than ever music from all around the globe: Calypso, Soukouss, Cumbia, Desert tunes and other genres in the making.

The entrance fee should be 3€ but it can also be more if you feel like helping out this bar De Vinger which as always intended to be just an open stage for young and less young local and international artists. Just providing what has become a rarity in Den Haag : a venue for alternative music.

Hope then to see you there one last time!

monday 23 Feb > Konono No1 @ OCCII, A’dam!!!! Rebel Up! support + djs Andy Moor + De Boer (The Ex)

10917902_777020035726766_928199350102673820_nDIY upcycled street orchestra from Kinshasa, Congo | Congotronics | “thumb piano”

This monday 23 Feb in OCCII, Amsterdammie!!!!!!!!!!

Konono N°1’s “Congotronics” album introduced the world to the strange and spectacular electro-traditional mixtures which are being concocted in the suburbs of Kinshasa, Congo. World music, electronica and avant-rock aficionados have all been equally amazed by this otherworldly music, which has driven the international press to come up with some surprising comparisons (from Can and Krautrock to Jimi Hendrix, Lee Perry and proto-techno!…).
The band was founded back in the 1960s by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called “sanza” or “thumb piano”, consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band’s line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There’s also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones.
