sat. 25 Feb > Rebel Up! Soundclash *global psyche night* with special guest Arrington de Dionyso (US) @ OCCII, A’dam

Hello hello,

It has been a while since we sadly had to cancel our december night due to unforeseen reasons, but we’re back with fresh energies to give you a special night of Rebel Up! sounds. Not our Congolese rumba night as previously promised, that one will happen in June! This will be a *global psyche night*, meaning we will focus on experimental & improvised global sounds as well as vintage pop/rock spheres from the 60’s and 70’s from different corners of the world. Ofcourse we’ll also give you a nice dose of heavy bass deeper into the night to big up the Rebel Up! kaleidoscope.

We’re happy to announce our special American guest Arrington de Dionyso (ex-Old Time Relijun, the psychedelic krautrock band from overseas & Malaikat dan Singa) who will bring his trans-utopian throatsinging, bass clarinet, inspired by Indonesian trance music as a live improvisation of global psychedelic proportions. Be warned, his sound will go deep into your soul and liberate it with shamanic power. Check out his outerwordly sounds; www.arrington.bandcamp.com

Our second guest will travel from less far Brussels, Belgium. DJ Lowdjo is an eclectic wizard of the sort that totally fits the Rebel Up! mood and we’re also happy to have him joining our global cause of diasphoric sound. He will play special vintage sets of Thai folk funk and Turkish psychedelic rock straight out of his 45’s collection that will get everyone swinging. Check his active blog and mixcloud for some of his fine mixes.

As always, the Rebel Up! crew will play electic ethnic sound and everything in between to make you listen & dance while our visuals will make sure there’s never a dull moment on the dancefloor.

The charity of the night where we will donate our profits to is NGO Bhakti Luhur in Malang, Eastern Java, which takes care of handicapped children. One of the aid workers is a dutchman who runs the excellent Madrotter blog, all about Indonesian pop, rock and folk music from the past with quality uploads, though since the whole megaupload bust his blog has been relocated at Madrotter Treasure Hunt.

sat. 29th oct > Rebel Up! Soundclash w/ DJ Ripley @ OCCII, A’dam

Bismillah!

In these times of occupied financial centers, where humans turn into amplifiers for subversive thought, you’re probably out on the tramway dancing to the bongos of liberation. We too are dancing there until the last goatskin drum is serenely strung up with the guts of the last banker.  Meanwhile, we’re overjoyed to announce it’s also time for the next edition of Rebel Up! Soundclash with a special guest from San Francisco.

Having torn up dancefloors across continents since 1995, DJ Ripley unleashes bass frequencies at revolutionary volume in town squares, warehouses, ships, clubs, squats, universities, community centers and activist spaces. Her wide-ranging sets unseat musical and social preconceptions with a mind-blowing conversation between kuduro, juke, dubstep, cumbia, booty bass, dancehall, soca, 3bal, jungle, baile funk, garage, breakcore, bhangra and dub.

As usual the Rebel Up! DJs will trigger their latest surprises and will accompany you through the night to unleash their musical encyclopedia of finest global tunes, from Angolan semba to Zanzibari taarab.

We never do it for the single reason of partying at the OCCII. The entrance fee is as usual reserved for a good cause which this time is the “Boats 4 People” project of the activist network Migreurop. As thousands of people died trying to reach Europe from North Africa in the Mediterranean Sea this summer, they are organizing a solidarity flotilla in early 2012 to raise awareness of this tragedy and denounce the criminalization of migration. “We have come to the conclusion that it is essential now to move to direct action in the light of the excessive number of shipwrecks taking place in the Mediterranean and the reluctance of Europe to concede entry to refugees. We call for a Mediterranean which is in solidarity with migrants and in opposition to repressive policies which seek to criminalise migration towards Europe more and more each day.”

So come along and embrace the idea of dancing and sweating for a good reason.

sat. 27th aug > Rebel Up! Soundclash @ OCCII, A’dam > Rebel Up! meets Bassculture crew

yeehawww.

time to kick off a new Rebel Up! Soundclash season at OCCII. From now on our parties will be once every 2 months instead of every month, just to keep it fresh and focused.

Coming saturday 27th, the Rebel Up! crew will meet the Bassculture crew from A’dam for a night of tropical bass, roots & funk, exotic folkpop and other vintage sounds to dance to. check the facebook event here.

Ofcourse our profits will go to a good charity as usual. With the heavy famine that is waging in the horn of Africa right now, we would like to raise emergency funds for the NGO SEED Samburu / Edukans. We also hope that everyone can donate whatever they can spare…it all helps!

A few weeks ago, the UN World Food programma decided to stop sending food reliefs to the tribal region of Central Sambura where the Samburu people live (a pastoral-nomadic tribe related to the Masai) and instead all food now goes to the refugee camps. It’s unfair that the UN turns their back on the Samburu and choose to let them starve. All the educational progress that has been made the past few years by NGO’s like Seed Samburu is on the point of being swooped away because without food, there is no education. Just 10 euro’s will already feed a Samburu child for a full month at school. This is the only daily meal they get as their own families are not able to feed them. Please give the Samburu kids a meal a day so that their life & education can continue!

If you are in Holland, you can also donate through this Edukans link or if you are elsewhere in the world, check the SEED Samburu site.

Saturday 13th of August: Rebel Up! DJ Riquetik @ Landjuweel, Ruigoord

Allo!

Tomorrow our sand digging nomad selector Riquetik will play a special early bird wake-up set at the Landjuweel festival in Ruigoord, from 12:00 to 14:00 outside -or in case of bad weather inside- the church. This year’s Landjuweel has plenty sonic space dedicated to world music, with live performances from Antwerp Gypsy Ska Orchestra and Jungle By Night and many fine DJs including Zerkalo and Polyesta. It also serves as a ‘futurological congress’ in which the prospects for cultural free spaces in and around Amsterdam will be discussed.  More info can be found in www.landjuweelfestival.nl

Hope to see you there!

Regardz,

Rebel Up! Crew

Emergency donation call for famine in the Horn of Africa

With the heavy famine that is waging in the horn of Africa right now, we would like to raise emergency funds at the end of our Rebel Up! set at Sfinks. We hope that everyone can donate whatever they can spare and all the proceeding will go to the NGO Seed Sambura in Kenya.
