Sat/Sun. 25 & 26 June Amsterdam Roots weekender; Rebel Up! @ Tropentheater & Oosterpark

Oh yes me friends, we’re lucky this year and we have the great joy to announce you two forthcoming shows during Amsterdam Roots festival in the last weekend of June. The first event will take place this Sat. 25th in the Tropentheater and next day at the gratis Roots Open Air in the Oosterpark.

Saturday 25th > Amsterdam Roots Festival 2011: Dansen in Marmer (dancing in marble) with Rebel Up! Soundclash

This Rebel Up! Soundclash night was supposed to be in OCCII, but for one time we move to the Marmeren hal of the Tropetheater as a collaboration between OCCII and Tropentheater. We will spill out our rarest and most peculiar selections from 22.30 up till 3.00, right after the naturally great performance of Maître Tambours du Burundi. This antique band is better defined through this quote, “Maître Tambours du Burundi is returning to Tropentheater because of the resounding success of her previous appearance. Twelve Burundi percussionists conjure intoxicating, pulsating rhythms from their barrel-high drums. Somersaults and other acrobatics form part of the spectacular performances by this mother of all percussion groups.” We will for sure be mingling with the crowd to take part of the dance craze that shall be going on for this full visual and soundwise ritual.

Info for the full event: Maître Tambours du Burundi (starts at 20.00).
Tropentheater is doing a special deal of *buy 2 tickets, get 1 free!* which adds up to 13€ per person if you pay it smart. If you only want to come to the afterparty, it`s 7.50 €.
We might have some spots left on our guestlist, so just ask us at info at rebelup dot org.

next day, Sunday 26th > Rebel Up! crew at the Club Stage @ Amsterdam Roots Open Air in Oosterpark (A`dam east)

The free Roots Open Air festival is a multiculti musical delight every year and we`re very proud to be playing here for the first time and especially as we are closing at the Club stage. It`s the perfect setting to deliver our full dancefloor flavour with tropically insane, voodoo-like enchantment and bodily trancendentalism. After a night of genuine African drums, we’ll be surrounded with contemporary world bands mixing traditions and urban fusion. Line up with no less than afrobeat funkers Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou (not to be missed!), tropical cumbieros La Makina del Karibe (right before us on the same Club Stage), mestizo funk by Sergent Garcia, the raw gnawa of Oudaden, desert blues of Terakaft, gypsy Parno Graszt and more. We will be fuelled and as usual we’ll try to surprise you with striking mixes of global styles for some sunday dancefloor action. Expect a trip that will take you from African electronics to digital folk styles, trancendentals spheres and beyond.

Info  on the festival: Sunday June 26, – Roots Open Air in Oosterpark, Amsterdam
our set is from 20.30 to 21.30 at the Club Stage > >  and remember, its free in and funded by well spent tax money! 😉

our event on facebook here.
with:

HOQUETS (BE/Brussels)
www.hoquets.net
Indiepop, rock and world songs about the weird/historical/culinaire facts of Belgium, all played on self-made instruments put together from discarded and recycled materials. Hoquets is a trio with members Maxime Lê Hùng (BE/ ex-Some Tweetlove), McCloud Zicmuse (US/Le Ton Mité & Maher Shalal Hash Baz ) and François Schultz (FR/Vive le Rouge).
They have just released their debut album ‘Belgotronics‘ on Crammed Discs and recently reworked a song of their friends Konono No.1. The eccentric live power of Hoquets is one of the best surprises of the year!

JEAN MIKILI (BE/Brussels/Liege)
www.myspace.com/jumbojumbojet
Sweet French pop & folk songs with African Soukous guitar rhythms and songs inspired by folk sounds from Laos and much more.

Afterwards DJ’s Brian Hainaut (Hoquets) and Jean Mikili will join us with the dancefloor sound from Congo & around.

The Rebel Up! dj’s will play a mix of sounds from Suriname, Antilles, Indonesia and South Africa to celebrate the rich musical heritage of these freed ex-colonial countries and music of the diverse immigrant groups in Holland. No orange sounds, but only MULTI-COLOURED sounds! 🙂

Tonight’s funds will go to the Belgian/Rwandese humanitarian organisation Igitego Inyange ASBL, who support education and healthcare projects in Rwandese villages in the Gahanda region. We once did a fundraiser night for them around 2 years ago, so time to again bring them into the spotlight. More info here; www.inyange.org

When dictators fall, it’s time for sound systems call

The scent of rebellion is spreading throughout the world and even if Europe is still far from following the movement, Rebel Up feels like shaking the ground a bit. So who’s gonna take a step for resistance ?

Sonido del Principe (NL) The great master of Cumbia and founder of Generation Bass will be here to remind us on good manners with sizzling cuts and mashups from every sounds, bleeps and natural noises that flow below the United States.

Saturday 18th of December: Rebel Up! Soundclash with DJ Zerkalo, Rebel Up! DJs & Process Rebel @ OCCII

Merry Chocolate Party to you all, gals and guys,

May your inspirations for 2011 be filled with true love and the will to do good. Well, if you did that already in 2010, you can search for new occupations then. I don’t know, save a boat that kills dolphins, attend Surinamese class, find a pet to your pets. Do something for your life. At least I know something you could do this Saturday. It’s meant to stimulate the heart and achieve a perfect body shape and pure feeling. It prepares you for the harshness of liver attacks for the next few weeks. By coming you’ll be forgetting all the horrors and fear to come. At least between 22.30 and 4.00.

We decided to have a fused menu this end of year 2010, that’s been fruitful in emotions and wild guests. Ours this time is an insider somehow, from the Netherlands, here is

DJ ZERKALO. He uses a rocket to transport you from Thailand to Haïti, some echoes of Columbia y Cuba, no transit and straight to Africa. You can tell he loves this continent with all its grooviness and rough rhythms. He’s searching deep in our planet jukebox, just the way we do.

www.djzerkalo.com

REBEL UP! DJs. The Good Belgian, The Ugly French and the Baddass Dutch reunited as in the days of old. The Triumvirate will be severe and strict in one point, making you argue all night long, what you just heard, where could it come from and how the hell someone could produce such craze.

www.rebelup.org

PROCESS REBEL. If Seattle, San Francisco and Amsterdam had something in common, that would be him. Our mad banana lover. Not only has he been living in those three cities but he’s got that uncompromising style from Seattle, the cool attitude of SF and the cosmoEuropolparty understanding of A’dam. He will process you into his tough bass blood and new funk selection. Keep some strength for that one.

www.subinfinity.com

VJ M is back to give our optical organs a well-deserved massage. He’ll bring along a big box of sublime cultureclashing visuals that will awaken your third eye while gently tickling your skin with photon bombs.

After that, we go to bed satisfied and ready for more in 2011.

Our charity funds will go this time for Warriors Without Weapons, an organisation that develops goodwill projects to conceive and realize especially in Africa. Alejandra from WWW will come with her shaker to sell you the best cocktails and raise more money for the cause. Seek for more info :

Saturday 27th of November: Rebel Up! Soundclash with Awesome Tapes From Africa & Process Rebel @ OCCII

Hey all,

As winter slowly approaches our northern hemisphere, Rebel Up! brings you a fresh harvest of all the warmest sounds our sonic biotope has to offer on either side of the equator.

This month’s edition will feature a special DJ set from Brooklyn’s Brian Shimkovitz a.k.a. Awesome Tapes From Africa. After researching the local hip-hop movement in Ghana he’s accumulated hundreds of cassette tapes of rare African music from Zimbabwe to Ethiopia to Senegal. He has been sharing his bounty through his immensely popular blog, and now on the road as a DJ.  Expect a highly explosive and danceable trip to the amazing music cultures of an entire continent!

Also from the US is Process Rebel with his nextstep fusion of bass music that traverses the electronic music diaspora with a lean towards dub, dubstep, post-dancehall and global ghetto tech.

Our nomad Rebel Up! DJs and VJ will follow a varied audiovisual trail, trespassing the borders between musical genres by bringing together elements from the furthest terrestrial realms and digital corners into an ethnopsychedelic potpourri that is as rooted in tribal sensibilities as it is in the labyrinthine urban jungles of the information age.

Since we almost didn’t collect any money for the good cause last time, the charity for this edition will again be Stichting Mopti, an organization active in the poorest parts of rural Mali. With its gardening and horticulture projects for women, Mopti aims to support basic subsistence needs independent of market fluctuations and promote the self-organization of women. More info can be found on their website: http://www.mopti.eu/

Saturday 22nd May Amsterdam – TransGobal Bass – Sonido del Principe // Process Rebel

Saturday 22nd of May @ OCCII – Rebel Up Soundclash meets Sonido del Principe and Process Rebel

Somewhere we have a say that goes “In May do whatever pleases you”

And us in Rebel Up we’re meant to respect that kind of free-minded motto. So we feel like pleasing each other with the crowd and our crew, music-wise mainly. Listen, don’t you hear the distant sound of horns spreading in all directions, beat down by the claves del America del Sur. Cumbia will be one of our centerfolds of the night only to allow us to go in various other destinations. Let’s have the program :

Rebel Up! Crew
– The saga continues with the reunification of our three original soundclashers. After having travelled for so long through the mountains and ending up in Armenia, Rik will distillate some of his crunchy curry material that you might find if you go through the desert. Seb shall boomblast the dancefloor with the stuff that’s not been created yet, he already has it. Looking for music from out there and beyond just ask Seb. The French dude will still pass on his motion-virus to the crowd and we’ll all get unstopable groovy legs. Maarten’s visions will splash on the screen all along the night.
Hot music and vids from our global understanding with beats and bass to your liking.

Sonido del Principe (NL)
– As a co-founder of Generation Bass blog, we owe a huge respect to SDP. He delivered in the past years dancefloor hits como “Cartagena”, under the brightest labels like Bersa Discos and Zizek. Now, the man is back to let us share is world of massive cumbia. Not one to take a nap on the counter but rather here to prove your skills at shaking your hips and shoulders. Here is one tropical base exploding in a firework of infinite possibilities. From Mexico to Buenos Aires you will hear genuine old school sounds mixing up with dubstep, electro and even hardrock.

www.generationbass.com/tag/sonido-del-principe/

Process Rebel (US/NL)
– Our friend will this time bring the battle gears to invade the last bits of reality you have left and transform it into a recreation world where strange whales are conversing with bushmen. His new stuff will be so hot that your comprehension of dancehall and dupstep will never be the same after that. He’s been heard in SoundCloud and many other links that you can get through that :
http://soundcloud.com/processrebel

http://www.subinfinity.com
Obviously, we’ll end up clashing our face with the last tune that hurts it’s so good.

We’ll go one last time for the Project Cinema in Jenin fundraising and hope to reach 300 euro from your donations and the simple fact that you’re coming in. See more infos here :
