new Rebel Up Nightshop show #74 > July, between Africa and beyond

This month of July we have a 3,5 hours long Nightshop show, 9 albums of the month and new songs, with a big focus on music from Africa. Starting with songs of the day; COVID-19 kologo music from Ghana (Ayuune Sule), and jazz from International Anthem label (by Anteloper and Angel Bat Dawid). Our albums of the month start with desert songwriting by Ak’Chamel (Akuphone), the early tsapiky cassette years by Damily (Bongo Joe), Bandé-Gamboa project between Guiné-Bissau & Cabo Verdian musicians (Heavenly Sweetness) and new ethiofunk by Mulatu Astakte & Black Jesus Experience (Agogo Records). It gets more percussive and electronic with albums by Malawi ritual drumming group Doctor Kanuska Group (1000Hz), Ugandan heavy electro tribalism by Nihiloxica (Crammed Discs), Portuguese percussive dub band HHY & the Macumbas (Nyege Tapes), deep Congolese futurism by Bantou Mentale (Glitterbeat) and a Dutch-Sierre Leone EP by producer Ramses3000 (Intercept) and Nigerian female rapper Aunty Razor (Blanc Manioc). tune in!

30.01 – 10.02: Rebel Up on Euro tour w/ Nahawa Doumbia in BE/NL/DE/FR/CH

hello friends,

for the next 2 weeks from 30.01 until 11.02, Rebel Up SebCat will be touring with Malian singer Nahawa Doumbia and her acoustic band. Not as DJ, but managing the band on the road, taking them from venue to venue through Belgium (Antwerp, Gent, Leffinge), Netherlands (Leiden), Germany (Dusseldorf), France (Paris) and Switzerland (Baden, Geneve & Dudingen).

Since the 1970’s, she is one of the main female voices of the Malian Wassoulou style. Check our her recent reissue on the Awesome Tapes from Africa label, it’s pure bliss.
On the tour they will have merch for sale (CD’s and vinyls) at very fair prices.

On saturday 8 Feb, SebCat will spin global tunes in Geneva together with the Bongo Joe team at Chez Jean-Luc cabaret bar into the night. Drop by & swing 🙂

This Turkish singer / multi-instrumentalist has an unheard voice, imbued with both melancholy and desire. She is accompanied by Grup Şimşek musicians and their hypnotic psyche pop from Anatolia. A cocktail of Turkish folk, groove and psychedelism that balm to the heart.

❂ Ko Shin Moon ❂
This duo mixes instrumental and digital compositions, contemporary electronic sounds, traditional music and samples from field recordings, Ko Shin Moon blurs the boundaries.

This instrumental sextet from Istanbul integrates bits and pieces of experimental music, an improvised structure and to our greatest happiness, the psyche of Anatolia!

Sunday evening, experimental folk night with:

╬ — LA TÈNE — ╬
is a Franco-Swiss trio that plays traditional music with saturated repetition, ethereal harmonics or imaginary choreographies. Industrial, dark and psychedelic trancedental at the same time with paganistic ritual compositions that seem to have no beginning or end. Taken from the newly released LP Tardive/Issime on Bongo Joe. 15 oct they play Bxl at la Senne underground venue.

╬ — ITHAK — ╬
an ancient dream. Devouring each morning heavy guitars and bold saxophones, he digests in the sun, washes himself to the streams of the world and his cities battle, guardian of the telluric forces to the electric weapons. Her voice pierces the skyscrapers, she goes as one looks for her lost island, with ardor and patience.

╬ — OSILASI — ╬
Violon à roue, singing, percussion, celtic harp. An influence of traditional music passed by their care to the mill and raised with the noisy sauce. Sometimes intimate, sometimes feverish, motives oscillate, evolve, unfold, and transform freely according to the perception of the moment.
