New release: Chicha Popular: Love & Social Political Songs From Discos Horoscopo 1977-1987

Chicha Popular: Love & Social Political Songs From Discos Horoscopo 1977-1987

New release on Rebel Up Records, +5 years in the making, retrospective of worker class & migrant chicha cumbia from Discos Horoscopo label from Lima, Peru in the 1980’s.

Between 1977 and 1987, the Discos Horóscopo label produced the largest wave of Andean tropical cumbia in the world; ‘chicha’, a reference to the indigenous Andean alcoholic drink. The label was filled with contemporary iconic figures such as Chacalón y La Nueva Crema, Los Shapis, Pintura Roja, Los Ovnis, Grupo Alegría and other groups which today have a cult status in Peru and beyond. Together they created a unique style with the capacity to talk about both love and uprooting, unemployment, struggle of classes, internal violence and impossible loves.

Selection made by DJ Pinchado, Rebel Up SebCat & Jalo del Prado Nunez. Out now digitally, streaming and as 2LP deluxe gatefold edition with 12 page booklet with Liner notes by Alfredo Villar and translated song texts (in spanish & english) and graphic gatefold design by Ruta Mare.

Available as 2LP or with limited edition 7inch bonus single (Los Shapis & blind singer Nohemi)
Also very limited edition run of 60 Chicha Popular Tshirts available, designed in neon paint by Ruta Mare.
Check the bundles on our Bandcamp.

Deli Teli – Tsifteteli Club > new release on Rebel Up Records, greek psychedelic tsifteteli grooves

Mini album by Greek-French group Deli Teli, who revisit Tsifteteli bouzouki music of 60’s/70’s Greece in a groovy psychedelic sound.

New release since 05.11 on Rebel Up in collaboration with Catapulte Records (who brought you Guess What, Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek, Orchestre Montplaisant)

Bongos, bouzouki and Farfisa organ galore ! The explosive cocktail of rock’n’roll and traditional Tsifteteli hailing from 1960’s Greece is still alive thanks to Deli Teli: the Marseille-based quartet performs a string of forgotten hits that once set Athens on fire, with a contagious energy and a subtle dose of Mediterranean drama.

Far from being an exclusive Greek sound, Tsifteteli music has travelled through borders for centuries and means ‘double string’ in Turkish. In the 1960’s, it mixed with rock’n’roll, surf and Latin-american influences, and gave birth to the typical Laïko sound.

With their powerful electric bouzouki (Greek lute) and the distinctive sound of the Farfisa organ, Deli Teli have carved their style while digging through the incredible goldmine of the late 60’s and early 70’s Tsifteteli/Laïko singles. The 4 musicians met in 2019 with a burning desire to dive into electric sensations – bassist Christos Karypidis used to play oud and keyboardist Arthur Bacon played accordion in most of his former projects – and made the most of 2020’s lockdowns by building their repertoire and thinking up Deli Teli.

On this mini-album, they interpret Aris San’s psychedelic 60’s twist song “Boum Pam” as well as Koko’s “Chily Chily”, a groovy belly-dance mover; “Ekso Dertia Kai Kaïmi” an intoxicating and frenetic floor shaker ; “Tsiftetelli 1969”, a cool organ-lead surfing instrumental ; and 2 slightly freer and more psychedelic compositions, “Taksim Deli” (improvisation) and “Bournelis”, a creative re-arrangement of 2 compisitions by Leonardos Bournelis.

Vinyl available now as pre-order for 12€ (delivery date early January)

2 NEW releases on Rebel Up Records; V/A – Mamari Remix compilation & Satanique Samba Trio – Mini Bad

New releases out this month of September!

Various Artists – Mamari Remixed
13 remixes between global electronic beats, afrohouse, bass and more….

The remix compilation ‘Mamari Remixed’ is the little electronic sibling of the album ‘Mamari’ by Muito Kaballa Power Ensemble. 13 producers from Africa, Europe and Latin America give their own spin on the original songs by making them ready for the dancefloor. All producers combine 19 different nationalities and show their ability to make bass music that stays true to the organic sound. The remixes not only use the original instruments but also manage to convey the political messages from the Power Ensemble.

Jan Janzen (keys) and Niklas Mündemann (saxophone) of Muito Kaballa are also DJs and enthusiasts of the underground clubbing scene. With ‘Mamari Remixed’ the two musicians want to create bridges between the worlds of “live music” and “club music”. Remixed included are by Nuno Beats (RS Produçoes), Catu Diosis (Nyege Nyege), Lee Bass (Gato Preto), Lua Preta, ARN4L2, DJ Satelite & PolBack, DJ Flavya, DJ Makala, BYDLY, Quixosis, 115 Solaris, Ekiti Sound and Rafael Aragon.

The countries represented on this compilation are Portugal, Uganda, Poland, Angola, Cabo Verde, Germany, Ghana, Colombia, Brazil, US, Spain, Netherlands, Ecuador, Belgium, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, UK, France, Uruguay and Algeria.

A limited edition vinyl pre-order as active as well, delivery is expected 15 december.

Satanique Samba Trio – Mini Bad
B sides from the Brazil’s experimental jazz underground.

From 2004 to 2020, Satanique Samba Trio has dropped 11! records into phonographic existence. Naturally, some compositions from the quintet’s (not really a trio indeed) catalogue didn’t make onto any album for one reason or another. ‘Mini Bad’ is a remedy for this situation, as it amasses 10 tracks that were almost part of albums like “Bad Trip Simulator #3” (2013), “Xenossamba” (2017) and “Forrivel” (2020). You can call it B-sides from B-razil, if you dare.

There is also a very limited edition 10″ vinyl, only available in Brazil. Check the bandcamp for more info.

Sunday 05.09 > Rebel Up & Friends @ Saintklet, Bxl w/ Cami Layé Okún, Edna Martinez, Fresh Nunas & SebCat

After last year’s fun, Rebel Up & Friends are coming back at Saintklet summer outdoor terrace on the Bxl canalside! with a great international lineup of special guests DJ Cami Layé Okún, Edna Martinez & Fresh Nunas, hosted by SebCat.

Cami Layé Okún (Havana, Cuba)
Cuban DJ/selector who collects vinyl records from allover the world as a way of sharing stories through music with similar organic roots. Her sound spans from the tropical to the tribal; think African and Caribbean rhythms mixed with a Latin soul and sensibility, engaging audiences and dancefloors with Cuban disco, Afro-Caribbean rarities and tropical Amazonian funky grooves. Currently based in Havana, she is so far the only local DJ that produces and promotes events in a 100% vinyl format. Edna Martinez (Cartagena, Colombia / Berlin)
DJ / curator, artist and radio host from the Colombian Caribbean based in Berlin, Germany. Her musical selection is linked to her artistic research in which she explores autobiographical migratory routes with the concept of resistance as its axis. Her sound involves Afro-Caribbean organic rhythms, jazz bases, tribal polyrhythm, Arabic folklore, and more. She is the woman behind projects such as “Latinarab” a trip from Jaffa to the Arab Caribbean, and “El Volcán El Orgullo de Berlin”, the only soundsystem picó party in Germany. She also moderates monthly radio shows on Radio Alhara (Palestine), Worldwide FM (London) and Boxout.fm (India).
