This Friday evening a special evening in underground venue Le Lac (Molenbeek, not to confuse with Les Ateliers Claus)

Phoenician Drive (Bxl)
At the crossroads of Mediterranean folk music and psychedelic rock, Phoenician Drive was formed in summer 2015 by percussionist Diego Moscoso grouping 6 musicians from very different backgrounds (flamenco, Balkan, psychedelic rock’n’roll, jazz, post -punk / new wave) for blending traditional designs with fuzz guitars and oriental rhythms. In the footsteps of Erkin Koray and Orient Express and under the influence of ‘kraut-rock German (Neu !, CAN, Faust etc.) and soundtracks 60’s music, Phoenician Drive Search hypnotic trance by relying on oriental grooves. Two demos were recorded in December 2015 and quickly attracted interest in Brussels (Ateliers Claus WIELS, Recyclart, Atelier 210) and elsewhere (Rockerill, Area B in Paris). An EP is being mixed into the hands of Débruit (label ICI).

The concert will start at 20h sharp by a prologue without electricity, enlightened by 400 artisanal candles.

this saturday 19th we organise a special Rebel Up! Sounclash night in the Brussels Beursschouwburg.
a global underground night with live sets and dj sets of ethnic beats through digital folklore, dub and psychedelia.

X.A.Cute (DE) presents Shards
Founded in the early noughties in Berlin, X.A.Cute has been active in different shapes and styles, but the roots always remained the same: dub and hip hop, spiced up with whatever caught the attention of core members, DJs and producers Wuzi Khan and Freak Ass E. Over the years X.A.Cute has recorded and played with artists as (among others) Mike Ladd, Miss Red, Mark Stewart, Infinite Livez, The Shadowhuntaz, Guillermo E. Brown, and Ari Up, with releases on labels as Echo Beach, Moniker Eggplant, Anorakism and Meerkat Recordings. In Summer 2014 MPC-wizzard Guvibosh joined the line-up after moving from Jerusalem to Berlin, adding his russian percussion and a selection of bass heavy beats to the mix. After playing a number of successful club and festival gigs this combination resulted in the digital relase “Shards”. A mirror of the current live-show, it features a storm of samples and scales selected from records and musical cultures around the world, grounded by bass heavy riddims and a subtle dub treatment, including an (authorized) version of Mark Stewart & The Maffia’s “Liberty City” and one of the (nowadays) rare vocal performance from Wuzi Khan. No computers were used on stage or while recording, with about 50% of sequenced beats from the trusted Korg electribe, and 50% of the songs freely tapped in real time and space.

Spearheaded by the alter ego’s Luke Warmcop and Graham Mushnik, this duo specializes in obscure metaphysical music and global soundtracks with electronic organs, synthesizers, melodica and electronics that take you through Russia, the Middle East and the 70’s *Giallo* cinema of Italy. Their most recent LP “Al Khawarizmi” is an amazing homage to the 8th century Arabic astronomer Al Khawarizmi who invented algebra and studied the solar system. It’s filled with Middle Eastern, Persian, Indo-Pakistani and Northern African psychedelic grooves from the 60’s and 70’s, belly dance beats enhanced by modern drum sequencing, samples and synthesizers. Expect a heavy dose of eastern psychedelics that will make your mind and body swirl into a higher state.

Joxaren (SE)
David Giese aka Joxaren is a Swedish musician with a background in Punk/Dub/Hip Hop/ Electro. Deejaying since the mid-nineties, Joxaren has been focusing on hybrids and intersections of musical styles and fitting it into his peculiar bouncy Skweee sound. Relentlessly hoovering the remotest stitches of the www for the best Tallava wedding jams, trading the latest Manele compilations from the local Romanian beggar on the corner, searching through Egyptian pop charts and of course adding all the news from his fellow Scandinavian Skweee-makers, Joxaren finds ingredients for his motley blend of sounds.

11270671_1769159983310525_149696102522087183_oThis weekend, the Eindhoven Psych Lab festival is down in Eindhoven (NL) at the Effenaar venue, organised together with the Liverpool International festival of Psychedelia.
On Saturday there is a good lineup of psychedelic/experimental rock groups playing, such as our good tuareg rocking friends Mdou Moctar from Niger, The Soft Moon and Earth just to name a few.

At the afterparty our SebCat will be playing a dance set of scorching guitar & psyche folk sounds from the sahara & sahel regions and other oddities of global psychedelic rock to get lost in until the early morning hours.

Hayvanlar Alemi is a psychedelic folk rock band founded in Ankara. They got together in secondary school in 1999, when they were 14. Classical rock and heavy metal were big influences on teenagers in Ankara then, and they started their musical venture playing hard-and-heavy covers, but very soon self-discovered free improvisation and moved into a more avant-garde approach, and later on occasionally deployed traditional instruments, found-sound elements like live radio, and colorful stage theatrics. They were influenced by the new folk-infused experimental rock scene of the late 90s Istanbul, but isolated from any music scene in Ankara, their sound and song-structure diverged from their contemporaries as they incorporated elements from the findings of their musical research into their sound, which included folk, pop and hybrid sounds of South East Asia, East and West Africa, South America and Russia, as well as Jamaican dub reggae and Californian surf. In 2010, their album Guarana Superpower came out on outernational label Sublime Frequencies and they have just released their latest album Twisted Souvenirs on Unrock.
arrest
is the project of pianist Annie Lewandowski from Minnesota, a place full of things that are long and longer: church services, dinner tables, and worry lines, to name a few. Somebody said there are ten thousand lakes there; if that’s true, each of them shows up in some little way in Annie’s songs. She writes under the name Powerdove, which began as a band of one in California in 2007 and was soon joined by John Dieterich (of noise pop outfit Deerhoof) and French guitarist Thomas Bonvale (L’ocelle Mare). Her new album ‘Arrest’ was recorded in one day and features playfull ballads that sound soft and dangerous like stolen kisses, sensual yet filled with joyous threats from the heart that disregard reason.

Rebel Up! Soundclash & OCCII present: Sahel Sounds showcase, hosted by label boss Christopher Kirkley.

Sahel Sounds
Is a more than special label of field and studio recordings of tradional and modern popular music straight from the African Sahel, headed by American musicologist Christoper Kirkley. It all started as a cultblog named *Music From Saharan Cell Phones* where local folk and pop music was collected on sim cards and USB sticks, which is the main source of hand-to-ear music distribution in the Sub Saharan region. Since then the Sahel Sounds project has unfolded as a label that has steadily been releasing unknown artistis and bands from the Sahel region with a website that goes far beyond any typical label with road trip stories, free musical uploads and background info. Christopher Kirkley will play a dj set with selections from his own label and other special finds.

*his very first European tour*
Mammane Sani Abdullaye is a legendary name amongst Niger’s avant garde. A pioneer of early West African electronic music, for over 30 years his instrumentals have filled the airwaves. The instrumental background drones of radio broadcasts and instrumental segue ways of TV intermissions borrow heavily from his repertoire. The dreamy organ instrumentals drift by sans comment, yet are known to all. Mammane first found the organ in 1974 as at the time he worked as a UN representative in Africa and bought it from a Rwandese colleague. Mammane’s composes in technique that can only be called minimal, relying on the simplicity and space. It is a remarkable manipulation of sound that uses the silence to invoke the emptiness – a metaphoric desert soundscape. Unsurprisingly, his source material is folkloric Nigerien music, and many of the compositions on this record are reproductions of ancient songs brought into the modern age. Interpreting this rich and varied history of Niger’s dance and song for the first time in contemporary musics, Mammane electrifies the nomadic drum of the tende, the polyphonic ballads of the Woddaabe, and the pastoral hymns of the Sahelian herders. Accompany this repertoire are a few compositions, such as Salamatu, the deeply personal love letter to an unrequited romance. His sound can very much be compared to the contemporary works of fellow African composers Francis Bebey and William Onyeabor, and on a western level Terry Riley and Kraftwerk are never far away.

His first and only album was recorded in 1978. Mammane stepped into the studio of the National Radio with his organ, where it was transposed and overdubbed in two takes. In coordination with the Minister of Culture, the album was released in a limited series of cassettes showcasing modern Niger music. The cassette project unfortunately did not progress as planned, and merely a handful were released. Today his cassettes are rare objects, highly sought by fine art connoisseurs and experimental music collectors in Niamey.

This Congolese band from Brussels will play vintage Congolese rumba soukous songs from the 60’s to 80’s, led by vocalist Yan Koy along with master members such as Petit Poisson, Pappy Muntu, Alonzo Baba and several others who played in famous Congolese bands such as Franco’s OK Jazz, Zaiko Langa Langa and Ndombe. In a 2 hour live set they will play classic rumba songs and take you into the Congolese underbelly of tropical rock with psychedelic guitar solo’s, hypnotising percussion and polyphonic vocals. Not to be missed!

Belgian trio from Brussels that specialises in Congolese rumba with fresh indierock while keeping it real for all to swing and shuffle along to. It’s gonna be *Tout Puissant* for sure as perfect warm-up to Color Rumba!
