smoke a rebetika
This special night will begin in full rebetika style… plus let ´s also support the social protests in Istanbul at Taksim in sound!

The Kazatzikis (GR/ A’dam)
live show by Greek duo The Kazatzikis. Rebetika is the Greek blues from the 20’s and 30’s of last century, sung by Greek immigrants that were kicked out of Asia Minor and Turkey during the wars. Rebetika songs are all about the hard life of an immigrant in the harbours and ghettos of Thessaloniki and Athens, with heavy and dark lyrics that touch drugs, poverty, love drama’s and prostitution. The Kazatzikis will play these old sounds to bring us back to the times of immigrant woes and economic crisis, perhaps a familiar parallel to the present times. Their set will begin around 23:30, so please arrive on time!

Sat. 8 June: Oyé! *CUMBIA DANCEHALL Fiesta* @ Bouillon Kube, Bxl

Rebel Up! & Silver Canary crews present:
Oyé! *CUMBIA DANCEHALL Fiesta* @ Bouillon Kube
a night of cumbia & dancehall flowing together in one strong Afrolatino sound, connecting the Caribbean isles to the Latin continent without borders.

BouillonKube_OYE_210x294-poster_v3

The Bouillon Kube is an old Galician restaurant which in olden days was also used as a resting place by pilgrims who travelled the Camino de Santiago. Now it has been turned into a global cultural spot for the St Gilles neighbourbood, where the focus is put on southern music, arts, poetry and film. They operate as a non-profit place where prices are fair, with drinks are much cheaper than elsewhere in town and so we make it a cheap night for all!

Silver Canary crew + MC´s > straight up roots
The Silver Canary is a Brussel based Soundsystem consisting of a international crew of dj´s and singers who organise roots nights in Matongé and other venues allover the city. The Canary brings you a deadly cocktail of underground Caribbean-Jamaican music to quench you thirst to dance. Everything from rocksteady up to raggamuffin!

Rebel Up! crew > cumbia, bass & tropical bounce
Since 2010, the Rebel Up! crew organises not-for-profit Soundclash parties in Brussels as fundraisers for small NGO´s. These rebels dive into many different local music styles from all around the world, whether it be ethnic, urban or a fusion of folk, pop and contemporary electronic dance music. On this night the sound will be all things uptempo Caribbean & streetstyle latino bass.

Chico Parany (AR) > cumbia & latino bass
our international guest Chico Parany from Córdoba, Argentina is a dj, selektor, remixer and investigator of folkloric rhythms and alternative, rebel and mestiza music from around the world. A trip of sounds that synthetize a rhythmic encounter between South America and Eastern Europe, blending gypsy with cumbia, Latin bases with Arabic melodies, Balkan-Beats, Tarantella, Punk, “Paso Doble”, … a revolution of senses, in search of a revolutionary and universal sound. During May until August he is based in Brussels and doing his “LA TRAMPA – EUROPE TOUR 2013”

182913_10151488293875345_497024356_n

Next Friday, experimental concert evening at Recyclart with drones, rough guitar sounds and Pan Afrabic immigrant spheres.

***
My Cat Is An Alien is the musical brainchild of Italian brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, whose sound is packed with many forms of experimentalia. Their concerts are always very unpredictable and exciting as if being shamanistic rituals. Before (1998-2012) they used mostly guitars and toy instruments to articulate thier musical idiome. At the end of last year, they suddenly changed their approach to focus on self-made snare instruments  and dissected electronic devices to give their musical universe a new sound. This new beginning has been documented on the double LP ‘Art Is A Tear Of Noise And Infinite Silence’, released on Discrepant records in october 2012. This will be their first Belgian show in this new sound.

Rough Americana is the fertile collaboration between the couple Morgan Craft and Giulia Lolli (DJ Mutamassik) and sometimes their 9 year old son Meroe. This duo plays an array of rough improvised music styles of modern times. The ‘Afro-American Viking’ Craft and the Italo-Egyptian roots of Mutamassik will supply musical influences from Memphis, Tennessee to Memphis, Egypte. Mutamassik is one of the pioneers of the Sa’aidi hardcore sound and expert in what she calls ‘Pan-Afrabic Immigrant sounds’. From her speakers she will fire afro-mediterranian hiphop as well as baladi breakbeats, brotherly next to more noisy and drone-like collages. Both worked with musical personalities such as Marc Ribot, Butch Morris, Ikue Mori, Hamid Drake and Kaffe Matthews and take their own unique place within the contemporary musical landscape.
