Next Friday, experimental concert evening at Recyclart with drones, rough guitar sounds and Pan Afrabic immigrant spheres.
*** My Cat Is An Alien is the musical brainchild of Italian brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, whose sound is packed with many forms of experimentalia. Their concerts are always very unpredictable and exciting as if being shamanistic rituals. Before (1998-2012) they used mostly guitars and toy instruments to articulate thier musical idiome. At the end of last year, they suddenly changed their approach to focus on self-made snare instrumentsĀ and dissected electronic devices to give their musical universe a new sound. This new beginning has been documented on the double LP ‘Art Is A Tear Of Noise And Infinite Silence’, released on Discrepant records in october 2012. This will be their first Belgian show in this new sound.
Rough Americana is the fertile collaboration between the couple Morgan Craft and Giulia Lolli (DJ Mutamassik) and sometimes their 9 year old son Meroe. This duo plays an array of rough improvised music styles of modern times. The āAfro-American Vikingā Craft and the Italo-Egyptian roots of Mutamassik will supply musical influences from Memphis, Tennessee to Memphis, Egypte. Mutamassik is one of the pioneers of the Saāaidi hardcore sound and expert in what she calls āPan-Afrabic Immigrant soundsā. From her speakers she will fire afro-mediterranian hiphop as well as baladi breakbeats, brotherly next to more noisy and drone-like collages. Both worked with musical personalities such as Marc Ribot, Butch Morris, Ikue Mori, Hamid Drake and Kaffe Matthews and take their own unique place within the contemporary musical landscape.
NIGHTSHOP PARTY !MERIDIAN BROTHERS, straight from Colombia, are ready to bring their mischievous blend of Latin rhythms and psychedelic grooves to Belgium for the first time. Straddling the line between new and old, this quintet is the creation of Eblis Ćlvarez, one of the key figures of the experimental music scene in Bogota. A true avant-garde guitar player and composer he also plays in Mario Galeanoās band Frente Cumbiero and was involved in the recording of Ondatrópica. In September 2012 Soundway Records released his album āDesperanzaā that features āGuaracha U.F.Oā, recently selected by Gilles Peterson as his #1 track of 2012.
http://www.meridianbrothers.com/CAPITOL K aka Kristian Craig Robinson has traversed a spectrum of electronic aesthetics throughout 13 years and 5 albums with releases on Planet Mu, XL & Faith & Industry. His 6th album Andean Dub from 2012 is an experimental cumbia masterpiece, influenced by a long road trip through Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. http://www.capitolk.com/
HUGO MENDEZ‘ dj style is a unique blend of African, Caribbean and Latin rhythms – a percussive explosion that includes heavy Afro grooves, old school mambo, tropical disco, bouncing samba, calypso funk and heavy cumbia, bringing vintage styles up to date with exclusive dubplate edits and a contemporary club slant.
After some digging trips across the Caribbean, he has put together several top albums for leading record labels, like Strut, Jazzman, Soundway and Nascente. Hugo also produces the cult Rhythmagic Orchestra project with Nostalgia 77, runs the Sofrito Specials label and makes the tropical selections for 22Tracks in Paris.

Time for another Rebel Up! session at Recyclart!
We are co-hosting this special African/Ethiopian night with the good Recyclart folks as part of a concert night with Ukandanz and Zea for whom we are playing support with eastern African and other modern African tunes.
Zea (Arnold de Boer, The Ex) will kick off the night with some of his eclectic African inspired punkrock songs with electronic effects and samples between Delta blues, Ghanese riffs, Ethiopian electrofolk and gabba beats.
uKanDanZ is a French-Ethiopian outfit that plays some serious electrified folky punkjazz with Asnake Guebreyes on vocals (from the late Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed band). Pure energy spiritualised with emotional drives to make the crowd go wild and shiver in Ethiopian dance stylee. Listen to their new album on Deezer and check out the video >
As always with Rebel Up! hosted nights, a part of the proceedings will go to a NGO project, in this case the Ethiopia-project of The Ex/Zea in the capital Addis Abeba where they support a music school for blind and handicapped children and other programmes. You can also make a donation at the bar if you like.
Keep in mind; it’s a concert night and not a late dance night, so do come early enough. doors 21:00, just 5⬠in, full info on Recyclart site.
