Friday 15th of may, Elec’tropical Night; Digtal Dub & Cumbia @ Vechtclub, Utrecht. ~live guests~ Douster (FR/ARG) & Sonido Del Principe (NL)

De Vechtclub & Rebel Up! Soundclash present an electropical night filled with the newest South American sounds. The sensual cumbia is back from the past and is scorching hot in Argentina at the moment, especially in the capital Buenos Aires.  Since a few years a lot of young musicians have been combining old & villera cumbia’s with a heavy dubby bass, lots of bass! Now for the first time, a night full of these new sounds in Utrecht, better believe it!  De Vechtclub is a new theatre/warehouse in Overvecht-Zuid, of which the interior is made from recycled materials and a mud wall! Cheap drinks, good vibes and an easy to reach location tucked away from residential area’s.

Expect digital dub and heavy bass with electronic cumbia, plus more rough global sounds!

Douster (FR/ARG)
Born & raised in the French near-alpine city of Lyon. Since 2 years he has been living in Buenos Aires and is part of the eclectic ZZK crew. His sound is a thick stew of roots, hiphop and electronica, extra spiced with the rhythms of cumbia and baile funk.  A hefty cocktail with lots of swagger alcohol for the dancefloor. Check his most recent ZZK mixtape, woahhhh!

As Sonido Del Principe he produces rough styled cumbia and plays the harder styles of the new electronic world music. Rebel Up! Soundclash #23, Saturday 25th of april; awareness night for the Schipholbrand; Free Ahmed Isa!

Time for Rebel Up! again!

Free Ahmed Isa!
~Schiphol brandt voort / Schiphol burns on~

It has been more than 3 years ago that the immigration detention centre at Schiphol airport burned down. An illegal government prison without fireproof materials, so it was a disaster just waiting to happen. 11 people died that october night in 2005. Libian immigrant Ahmed Isa is suspected of starting the fire by flicking a cigarette butt -say what?- He has been in jail ever since that night and still without trail. Testimonies by many of his immigrant inmates have proven that Ahmed Isa is innocent and that the insecure fire facilities are to blame. The government however, chose to turn him into a scapegoat. Normally his trial should have taken place this week, hoping that this night could be celebrated as his night of freedom. Unfortunately his trial has been postponed till august. Instead, let’s shake the  shackles.
We say: Free Ahmed Isa!
www.vertrokkengezichten.net

During the night we will have Senegalese and Ghanese immigrant artists playing live & dj-ing alonside us. They were in that detention centre and survived that fire. We will give them a stage to spread their message, whether in words or music. We hope you want to listen and think deeply to them. Please tell your friends, family and come along to support!

Please note that we will open a little bit earlier, at 22:00

The lineup:
Black Lion (tribal animal dance from Senegal) site
Sali (African hiphop (Ghana))
DJ Papa Sakho (Senegalese dance music)
Wontanara Takkita (various Guinean drums played by global folks)

Profits of the night will go to the immigrants of the uprising in Block L, which happened last february. Most of them still need legal help, phone credit to call their family and other items that can make their life in detention centre a bit more bearable. See here for the information: Block L uprising information site

Rebel Up! Soundclash, Sat. 28th of march with 2/5 BZ (TR) & Zea (NL) live!

Hello all

@ Worm 27th

Time for another sweet Saturday of Rebel Up! sounds.
A few weeks ago we played at the OT301 at an amazing Ethiopian Azmari night -the Ililta Band with Chalachew Ashenafi-, thanks to Andy, Terrie & Colin for having us. It was nice to see some of our regular RU visitors too!

This saturday we’ll be having 2/5 BZ straight from Istanbul! Perhaps not a famous household name, but all the better. Someone who has been a John Peel favorite surely can’t disappoint.

Serhat Koksal aka 2/5 BZ has done 2 of those famous Peel sessions, which have both been translated into a crafty cutted ep’s. Well worth checking out, listen to the sounds on his myspace page.

2/5 BZ mixes rough beats and sample cut-ups with political narratives which go from east to west and vice versa.  True spheres from the oil-orient that is! Add some bizarre visuals of 70’s & 80’s ‘Nabucco’ cult movies to the mix, along with *no exotic* political images and you’ll experience what 2/5 BZ is all about.

Lately he has been occupied with special unrooted global movements, such as the Venezualan and Iranian cultural psyche and his latest audiovisial work ‘No Cultural pipeline Dialogue“. What to expect then? Who really knows, but what is sure is that an accidental occidental grip will take your attention and make you sway to blurred eurasian pixels loaded with heavy static. Better come and find out!

Ps., should you be living in the Rotterdam area, 2/5 BZ is also playing a live set @ Worm on Friday, so plenty of chances to catch the gullible guy!- wormweb

Our 2nd live guest of the night will be none other than Amsterdam local (and Rebel Up supporter & OCCII volunteer) Zea! Instead of a 2-piece duo,  Zea is continued as Arnold’s solo project for now (plus he has become the newest member of The Ex since a month!). As he puts it himself, he’ll be bringing some ‘buzzing pop and outernational rock music, yay!  See way below some awesome video’s of Arnold in Ethiopia last year.  ‘Song for Electricity’, such a great song and clip isn’t it? It makes us jump and jive 🙂

Song for Electricity

Also we’ll be joined by the mysterious DJ de Boer,  who will play ‘agrarian dance music’ from allover the world and possibly some ethnical Friesland sounds, Holland’s own foreign rebellious state 😉 Try to take a good guess as what his identity of semi-indie fame is. It ain’t that hard really.

Ofcourse the same old Rebel Up DJ’s will be dusting their records and swiping cd-r’s for your pleasure as well as our VJ team. New visuals will once again collide into millions of pixels, raw footage and whatnot loops.  Sure, we’ll serve the syrup mighty sweet and sour!

Charity Matters, we stick with Islamic Relief for the 3rd and last time tonight. Families in Gaza and Palestina keep on needing your support. The majority of Gaza citizens are still without water, electricity or gas. Food is running out, and around 80,000 people are estimated to have been left homeless.

Islamic Relief is an international relief and development organization which has been working in the Palestinian territories since 1994. In spite of ongoing blockades and enduring limited humanitarian access, Islamic Relief Palestine has managed to supply and will continue to supply food parcels, medical supplies and blankets to the people of Gaza, co-operating with the Palestinian Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and other aid agencies in order to alleviate the pains of the people of Gaza. Your donation may seem but a tiny step, but lots of tiny steps combined will surely enable something of a positive leap to occur in the lives of our fellow humans in the Gaza strip!

Hopefully the Dutch website of Islamic Relief has been made free of criminal or anti-islamic phishing.  If in doubt, redirect your digital money to islamic relief/ or just come along to our night and drop them in our tin box!

Oh, one of our dj’s has a little backlog of Nepali topi hats, caps and other locally crafted goods from the secluded mountainous Tansen valley from last year. Again up for sale for those interested in uniquely streetwise Nepali youth & grandpa fashion 🙂

Rebel Up! Soundclash double dose; WEEKEND TOUR -> Fri 27th @ Worm, Rotterdam & Sat 28th of february @ OCCII, Amsterdam; with Filastine (US/SP) & Malorix (NL)

Hello there,

It’s your soundgrocer knocking at the digital window, bringing some sweet saffron smells.  🙂
We are preparing for another Rebel Up! Soundclash, this time a full weekend of Rebel Up! clashing in Holland’s 2 biggest cities!  Let’s just call it a ‘Tour of the Dams’ thing, so that people in both Rotterdam & Amsterdam can get a cultured listening by the hands of Filastine, Malorix and our Rebel Up! crew.

On Friday 27th of february the friendly people @ Worm are taking our rebel Up! crew and Filastine (US/SP) in their playhouse. The night is hosted by Redrum Recordz and is set up as the album release party for local Rotterdam resident artist Malorix, who has just released his crisp new album ‘Sound System Culture Clash’ on the same label. Expect a display of broken world beats with different flavours and dippings. Since we are kinda co-hosting too, we will happily provide the playaround sounds and visuals throughout the night!  We also heard rumours that Arnold of Zea (and also The Ex) will be taking bar playing duties, wahey! 🙂   so, Rebel Up! does Rotterdam a go-go!  Damage is 7 euro’s, first 25 visitors get a free Malorix album!

@ Worm 27th

But beware, unlike our Amsterdam episodes, this night will start @ 21ish and will be finished at 2am. (not 1am as wrongly stated before)

That’s good news for all you Utrecht-ites; now is a direct night train going from Rotterdam to Utrecht in 40mins, not the 2 hours of boredom and snoozing as before!

See here for more info at the Worm tube;
http://agenda.wormweb.nl/agenda.php?id=2440
and if you can not make it on Friday…..

the next day, Saturday 28th of february, will ofocurse bring us to our faithfull nest that is the OCCII in Amsterdam oud-zuid.
Here all the shine will be on Grey Filastine, coming from his Barcelona holdout. He has also just released his new album ‘Dirty Bomb’ on French experimental label Jarring Effects & Soot Records. What can we say, this album is even better and rougher than his previous one. The album was recorded in many corners of the world and different deep bass styles seep through the soundpalate. Filastine has been quite active in the last 10 years as part of anitcapitalist improv group Tchkung! and marching band Infernal Noise Brigade that performed at WTO meetings. Anyone who has seen Filastine live at work before will remember that his solo sets are all about bringing his sounds live to the dancefloor, with live drumming in shopping cart setups! Filastine will serve up a spicy melange of balkanized ragga, gunshot dubplates and endless critical political mashes between the eastern and western hemispheres. This IS the brave new world in full sound.  To get a serious travel in taste, listen to his 2007 Blentwell mix.
http://www.blentcast.com/Blentcast_no7_Filastine.mp3
http://www.blentwell.com/blentcast/blentcast7.html  (tracklisting)

Check out his website and hidden blog about his travels in Asia and on recording his album.  And scroll down for some live video’s!  red hot.

Malorix surely is no unfamiliar face at Rebel Up! anymore and will also present his freshly new album in a good live setting. We’ll also shape the night with our warm-up and cool-down sounds & inspiringly tantalizing visuals! Our promise -> a thrift store experience of ethnical influences and unknown styles, mashed with the obvious sounds of cumbia, kuduro, rumba, gypsy, maghreb, dabke, molam, gamelan and any other sizzling folk/pop/rock/hiphop/noise/ambient combination, who knows!

About charity matters. Last time unfortunately we didn’t  collect much funds for Islamic Relief so we are raising the roof for them again. Hope we can provide some deserved aid to families in Gaza and Palestina this time. As many of you will know, things are not going well in Gaza at the moment. Around 900 people have been killed and over 4000 have been injured during the last sieges. The majority of Gaza citizens are currently without water, electricity or gas.

A word of advice; we recently heard that the Dutch Islamic Relief site is prone to ‘phishing‘, so do not pay them straight by credit card but by Giro 2002!
Also refer to their international website unless you’re sure of the safety of your paying method. This phishing incident does raise the prime question; who are behind it; just simple web criminals or Western intelligences blocking the money flow to the East? Perhaps it’s a combination of both, it wouldn’t be so odd really.

Oh, I still have a little backlog of Nepali topi hats, caps and other locally crafted goods from the Tansen valley that I took back with me last year. Up for sale on both nights for those interested in uniquely streetwise Nepali youth & grandpa fashion 🙂

Hope to see you somewhere!

Percussion bits for Filastine Live at Transmediale 2009, Berlin from Grey Filastine on Vimeo.

Some site troubles; fixed

I had a bit of a scare last week when I found a sneaky hacker inserted some code on the Rebel Up website. I don’t know if any of you dear visitors have seen any of it, but sometimes visiting the site a warning popped up claiming your computer needed to be scanned for viruses. It’s called ‘Advanced XP Defender’ or ‘XP SecurityCenter’; totally bogus software that gives totally bogus warnings that try to cheat unsuspecting surfers out of money after fake virus scans.

I don’t suspect anybody went and bought anything, thinking that the Rebel Up crowed is not fooled easily, but a malicious hack like that is really annoying. After some googling and cleaning and putting up some more defenses I think the site is save again. I hope nobody was inconvenienced by this.

Here is some more info about the ‘Advanced XP Defender/ XP SecurityCenter’ and how to remove it if you have it on your computer:

Lost iPhone @ OCCII last saturday

Hi all,

Thanks for coming out last saturday!
It was a mighty fine busy night with a super heavy live set by Maga Bo and Bnegão.

Maga Bo is seriously hungover, not from sodapops, but from losing his brand new iPhone. He just had it since a week ago and bought it on his tour down under in Oz.
We hope that someone found it on the dancefloor or at the bar. Please let us know earnestly if you have found it.

It’s nasty to think, but it might have been stolen. For now it seems to point that way as Bo left his phone upstairs at the OCCII for a lil’ while, lil’ enough for a pesky thief to strike its luck (truly bad karma on you!).
It truly would be a sad day to realise that our artist’s belongings are not even safe in the swell OCCII, bah 🙁

well, let’s hope for the best.
