Wed 3 Dec > Ogoya Nengo & Dodo Women group in OCCII, Amsterdam!

ogoyaoccii

On wednesday 3 Dec, another great Rebel Up! concert night in OCCII, Amsterdam
with Ogoya Nengo & Dodo Women group playing!!!!

Ogoya Nengo (in drawing above) is on her 1st tour outside of Kenya. Born in the 1930s in a small village at the shores of Lake Victoria, she soon joined the socially critical Dodo singers, a genre and community which is in danger of vanishing. Ogoya became the rave of her time, singing to great chiefs, warriors and even colonial officers and missionaries. Despite Ogoya being a legendary Kenyan folk artist with a career spanning over three decades little people outside Kenya have had the chance of ever hearing her and her ensemble. Ogoya Nengo’s approach to Dodo, a genre which is in danger of vanishing, is a very personal one: Her music is characterized by her powerful, passionate and compelling voice and is as timeless as it is mystical. Obviously Ogoya is a legendary Kenyan folk artist who has had an immense career spanning over three decades, but due to limited resources her music has remained in her region, and not many outsiders did have the pleasure of hearing her yet.
Her album has just been released on the Honest Jon’s label.

Sun & Mon 31 Nov/ 1 dec > 24h Music manifestation: Touche Pas A Mon Jeu De Balle! Action callout!

24h

ahoy folks,

Brussels callout for action!

No to a car park under the place du Jeu de Balle!

The city of Brussels has recently decided to build four new underground car parks in the city center (Nouveau Marché aux Grains, Yser, place Rouppe and place du Jeu de Balle), linked by a „mini-ring“. This project is not based on any study and does not respond to any needs: in the numerous car parks in the city center, 6000 to 7500 parking spaces are not occupied. Such a projet, if realised, will disfigure several squares and places in Brussels, create additional traffic in neighbourhoods already congested and will cause years of suffering for the population of Brussels due to construction work.

We are merchants, shopkeepers, residents of the Marolles and all of Brussels, lovers of this neighbourhood and consumersatits fleamarket. We opposethe construction of this unnecessary car park under the place du Jeu de Balle with all our forces. Its realisation would have horrendous consequences for the fleamarket, the local businesses, the residents and for the existing diversity of this neighbourhood. Instead ofanother big construction site, the place du Jeu de Balle and its historic underground deserve to be classified. Unparalleled in the world, the fleamarket, which takes place regularly since 1873, and the resulting activities in its surroundings, constitute an economic, social and cultural heritage to be saved by all means possible.

Sat 22 Nov > Rebel Up! Soundclash: Chancha Via Circuito (AR) + Muevelo! dj’s (Grandpamini & Pedrolito)

rebelup_22nov_poster_smallYo folks,

our next Rebel Up! Soundclash party has a Latin-American flavor, with special guests from Argentina & Chile! You know what that means! Cumbia, cumbiaton, reggaeton, merengue, dembow, tribal, global bass, andean folklore, narco electronics & twerk folk! In short; not to be missed 🙂

with special guests >
Chancha Via Circuito
One of the foremost exponents of Argentina’s digital cumbia scene, Pedro Canale aka Chancha Via Circuito has released 2 albums on Buenos Aires’ famed ZZK label and just released his 3rd album Amanasara on Brussels label Crammed Discs. Their blend of Argentinian folklore, Paraguayan harp and Andean mysticism, all processed through Pedro Canale’s own futuristic strain of electronic music, has garnered great reactions: the albums were hailed by Pitchfork and the New York Times, among others, and Chancha was enlisted for remix work by Gilles Peterson and Gotan Project. Expect a set of dubby cumbia and minimal electronic folk spheres straight from the Andes!

Muevelo! (Grandpamini & Pedrolito)
This Chilean/ Argentinian duo runs the famous Parisian Muevelo parties and are the top of the cream of new latino bass sounds from the americas. Some years ago Grandpamini already made Brussels sweat at a Nightshop party in the Recyclart and we’re happy to invite him again to play his own fun edits of reggaeton beats and tropical bass. mas perreo, mas perreo! Pedrolito is his sidekick at Muevelo and runs a saboroso radio show for Groovalizacion radio. Expect a heavy suave mix of villera street cumbia, tropical bass and dancehall.

Ogoya Nengo will do one of her first performances outside of Kenya.

Inspired by traditional Ethiopian songs, uKanDanZ is an explosive musical hybrid of styles which, as the name suggests, are made to dance to. With guitar, bass, drums and tenor sax they occupy a vibrant place somewhere between rock, improvised jazz, noise and Ethiogroove. Front and centre is charismatic vocalist Asnake Guebreyes from Addis Abeba, chanting Ethiopian soul melodies that transcends the highly energetic music to unheard places. They deliberately cross all traditional musical borders, creating something new and unique while at the same time staying true to the origins of the genres they magically melt into one.

as always our Rebel Up! sounds will be in African, Latino, Caribbean, Arabic and Asian global spheres, tripping around the world in unknown sounds to make you bounce.
