On the back of our Pan-Afro futuristic October edition, we turn our focus on chunky Latin American sounds; Cumbia (vintage/nu, Chicha, Sonidera, Villera), Latin Bass, and a pinch of bachata and merengue.

Sonido Martines is the Argentine figurehead of the South American cumbia scenes. In his dj mixes, Argentine and Colombian Cumbia meet vintage Vallenato and Chicha, and Dub hits upon electronic music. He is a tireless seeker of lost vinyl records and remixer of Cumbia classics, shaking up the dancefloors with a wide selection of tropical music from all over Latin America. LEBLANC (BE | Rebel Up! / Pantropical)
Last seen & heard in February deconstructing the dancefloor at Pantropical with Pinchado and DØG. LeBlanc is one of the most pleasantly obsessed and knowledgeable purveyors of Non-western, tropical music for the Benelux. Together with Rebel Up! / Nightshop’s Sebcat he’s the co-curator for many great tropical events in Brussels (Recyclart, Beursschouwburg, Les Ateliers Claus, Bonnefooi etc.), and co-hosts the Nightshop radioshow on Radio Campus. Despite the dizzying number of subgenres LeBlanc uses for his DJ mixes, they’re always focused and highly dancable. Tonight’s set will include digital cumbia, dancehall, reggaeton and other global bass.

Spins his fave vintage Dominican tunes, including Bachata, Merengue, and Palo; reverb and effect drenched, to make things a bit more compatible with the other sounds on offer on this night.
CHRIS BRUINING (NL) & NIQUE QUENTIN (DE) – live percussion
The DJ sets will be spiced up with skilful live percussion played by Rotterdam based percussionists Chris Bruining (Gallowstreet, La Banda Fantastica), and Nique Quentin (Los Paja Brava / Doktor Schnitt). Chris recently played live with Dick El Demasiado at Pantropical in September.

Far from the current Ayatollah Oriental fashion, which flood us with Orientalist and post-colonial clichés, Arabstazy is the action that created its own movement. The collective was founded in 2013 by a handful of artists spread across Tunis, Paris and Berlin, they organize their independence by starting to organise their own parties and edit their tracks on their home label Shouka (*thorn* in Arabic). They establish unthinkable links between different pieces of the puzzle of the North African identity, moving smoothly to esoteric Sufi Stambeli possessions … Thus, in the hands of this young Franco-Tunisian collective the united spirit of North African trance is fully expressed. At their parties, eclectic artists such as SKNDR, Tropikal Camel, Wetrobots N3rdistan were all part of the amazing Project Chaos made in Tunis. True to their taste for dark superstitions, Friday the 13th they will tread the soil of BXL for the first time. They are missioned by their guru Mettani 滅, producer Deena Abdelwahed, female VJ Waf and shaman Tropikal Camel, who just released his 11th album on Shouka in K7 format.

Uses videos and photos to embody her thoughts, emotions and to translate questions. Driven by a desire to treat the idleness of sensible beings to create chronic heterotopias at her disposal, she gradually opens a creative future that puts the scenography at the center of her research. The visual soul of Arabstazy since its creation, she is also part of other projects such as Wafolyv and Planningtorock.

This saturday our international friends of El Pulpo Collective are organising a special night in La Tentation, helped by Rebel Up! though we’ll not be there this night, as we are in Budapest for WOMEX.
The evening starts early with a concert by Galician folk musicians Narf & Uxia.
El Pulpo night will then kick off with special guests Los Demonios de la Cumbia!!!
This is the band project by DJ Kumbia Beats aka Marco Bustamente, resident of Antwerp but originally from Beni, Bolivia. This insatiable traveller, multi-instrumentalist and producer has formed a strong reputation over the last decade or so in the indigenous folk & electronic music scene of Bolivia. Los Demonios de la Cumbia is the result of a mix between 2 worlds, as they blend alternative electronic styles like moombathon with Colombian cumbia and Bolivian folk. Through this mix of traditional instruments and electronic effects one will hear the different Latin American nationalities represented in this group; Cuba, Bolivia, Chili, Paraguay and beyond. Fiesta pura with these demons!
Afterwards the DJ’s of Groovalizacion Radio /El Pulpo will provide all the tropical tunes you need to dance the whole night!
Groovalizacion Radio is a web radio station that started in 2008 and consists of journalists and cultural activists presenting shows with music from allover the globe, from traditional to urban sounds. Gaetano Dub from Liege, who brings the wildest latin & roots tunes and Venezuelan DJ Jo Selectorfrom Bruxelles will give you all the latin & african flavours mixed up for a heavy session of dancing.

Next day on sunday afternoon there is a swapping market and musical matinee afternoon at our homestead venue OCCII. The Fly Agaric collective organises this afternoon of various swapping and with a special concert by Moroccan musician Lahcen Akil and the Chaabi Brothers. Wow!
Lahcen Akil was born in 1969 in the village of Tamlalte on the route of the thousand Kasbahs in the Moroccan High Atlas. Influenced by acoustic music and traditional Amazigh songs, he started music very young. As songwriter and poet, he writes songs about the beauty of the region which he plays on a self-made 5-stringed lothar lute, composed of a wooden handle, a palm soundboard and goatskin. Lahcen is joined by fellow villager and percussionist El Houssain Safir who plays the bendir, a traditional drum with vibrating snare. For the occasion, two more musicians come along: the bassist David and accordionist Matthieu. Be ready for a compelling evening of raw Amazigh roots out of one of the most beautiful regions in the world!

Raised in the rural town of Tzaneen (northern South Africa), Spoko started producing at age 12. After moving to Atteridgeville (a 99%-black township outside the mostly white city of Pretoria) he lived in an area called Ghost Town, near Atteridgeville’s cemetery, where as the neighborhood’s premiere producer, young Spoko earned the nickname The Ghost. In the early 2000s DJ Spoko traveled south to Soweto, where he studied sound engineering in the studio of Nozinja, creator of the SHANGAAN ELECTRO style. After Spoko built his own studio back home, he took a producer named DJ MUJAVA under his wing, leading to Spoko’s great but uncredited triumph as the percussion mastermind behind Mujavas Bacardi House indebted “Township Funk.” Since the release of “Ghost Town” (his first official western release) Spoko has continued to develop his own Ghetto Boyz entertainment – working with local Atteridgeville talent. https://www.facebook.com/djspokoofficial https://soundcloud.com/djspokom

as the title says > Puxa: Luso African Dance Night stands for a night filled with African dance music from the Lusophone countries such as Angola and Cabo Verde with styles like Semba, Funaná and more. Expect some serious tropical sounds impossible not to dance to.
‘Puxa’ means ‘pull’ in Portuguese (and not ‘push’ as would seem logical) and is used as a musical shout to pull your dance partner closer to you. Be ready to hear Puxa! night long!
Live concerts by Chalo Correia and Band from Angola via Lisboa, Tabanka from Cabo Verde via Rotterdam and the Celeste Mariposa dj’s from Lisboa.
Chalo Correiais Gonçalves António Correia, an Angolan musician and singer who grew up with Semba music in his blood. Chalo was born in Luanda, the capital of Angola, in 1968. During his boyhood he was fortunate to encounter musicians from revolutionary semba bands like Os Merengues, and Os Kiezos. He moved to Lisboa, Portugal in the beginning of the 90s and started to learn the classical guitar on autodidact and academic level with a strong will to make it by playing vintage Angolan music. His debut album ‘Kudihohola’ has just been released in June by Celeste/Mariposa Discos and is testimony to the development of his remarkable vision on Angolan music. Chalo Correia as a band retains the explosive, organic sounds of Semba and Rebita, but also remains in touch with the modern urban afro music scene in Lisbon. Semba is the swinging afro style from Angola, it comes from the word Masemba, which means ‘belly bumping’, a reference to some serious tight dancing. It’s the original base for styles like Brazilian Samba, Kizomba, Rebita, Kazukuta and it inspired the birth of urban Kuduro sound. Check his new video below for that sweet Semba sound.
Tabanka is a 7 piece Cabo Verdian band from Rotterdam, playing the fast swinging funaná music, thé dance sound of Cabo Verde. Their delirious funaná is ruled by the diatonic accordeon (gaita) and the ferrinho (metal stick) for some scraping rhythms and changing speeds. The group got its inspiration by generational musicians such as Bulimundo and Américo Brito but with their own modern interpretation and sound. Check it out! >
TheCeleste / Mariposadj duo run the famous Afro-Baile dance nights in Lisboa where they bring the Lusophone music culture together in sound. Their research is all about music from the former African Portuguese colonies; Angola, Kaapverdië, Guinee Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tomé & Principé, digging up old vinyls on markets and visiting studio’s in Lisboa. They just started their own label Celeste Mariposa Disco’s on which they released Chalo Correia and for sure more Luso African releases will follow!
