Next day on sunday afternoon there is a swapping market and musical matinee afternoon at our homestead venue OCCII. The Fly Agaric collective organises this afternoon of various swapping and with a special concert by Moroccan musician Lahcen Akil and the Chaabi Brothers. Wow!
Lahcen Akil was born in 1969 in the village of Tamlalte on the route of the thousand Kasbahs in the Moroccan High Atlas. Influenced by acoustic music and traditional Amazigh songs, he started music very young. As songwriter and poet, he writes songs about the beauty of the region which he plays on a self-made 5-stringed lothar lute, composed of a wooden handle, a palm soundboard and goatskin. Lahcen is joined by fellow villager and percussionist El Houssain Safir who plays the bendir, a traditional drum with vibrating snare. For the occasion, two more musicians come along: the bassist David and accordionist Matthieu. Be ready for a compelling evening of raw Amazigh roots out of one of the most beautiful regions in the world!
Next up this thursday is the Kick Off The Campus / Stoemp night at the KultuurKaffee at VUB university campus. It’s a party night to kick off the academic year and a fine night for students to get wild and on global sounds. and oh, it’s FREE IN, also for non-students!
head act of the evening is Merdan Taplak & his Balkan Beat Brassband, who will swingaling between euphoric balkan beats, New York hiphop and electrofunk. Merdan is a born and raised Antwerpian with Turkish roots and is known for his dj sessions and producer skills. With his new band he takes his sound a big step further and to global urban spheres. http://merdantaplak.com/music/
The band Sabena will be the perfect warmup > multicolor electropop with African grooves. Just like Merdan, this Afro-Belgian band from Leuven mixes electronics with an energetic and crazy live-act. Recently they remixed Taplaks single “All Out” (ft. Kraantje Pappie) and also worked together with Belgian global funk outfit Buscemi. http://www.sabenamusic.com/
Support by Rebel Up! dj’s Sebcat & Leblanc for your dancefloor dose of global sounds. Expect us to play a worldly warm up before/between the band and afterwards for a fine late night party!
