Fri 5 August > Pantropical: ATA KAK (Awesome Tapes From Afrika) > Afrobot > Rebel Up’s Duckfood.

Ata Kaka

≈ ATA KAK (GH) | Awesome Tapes From Africa)
Pantropical is super thrilled to introduce the Ghanaian electronic/rap/hiplife–highlife sensation ATA KAK, the man who kick-started the whole Awesome Tapes From Africa phenomenon!
Ata Kak’s cassette “Obaa Sima” was almost completely ignored upon its release in Ghana back in 1994. But when musicologist Brian Shimkovitz stumbled upon the tape at a street stall in Cape Coast, Ghana eight years later, it formed the catalyst for his new venture, the Awesome Tapes from Africa blog. Shimkovitz wrote of Ata Kak’s music in his inaugural post: “This is it. The song is called ‘Moma Yendodo’. You may never hear anything like this elsewhere. No one I know in Ghana listens to this frenetic leftfield rap madness.” The music on the recording – a mix of highlife, Twi-language rap, funk, hip-hop and electronica – traverses a rich and varied (international) pop music landscape, while also reflecting contemporary Ghanaian music of the period. Presented with the sweaty passion of a Prince record and the lo-fi recording charm of early Chicago house music, Obaa Sima’s joyous soul and casual brilliance made the enigmatic Ata Kak an underground internet sensation and a party-starter the world over. After more than a decade of searching Brian finally tracked down the singer.

First time ever introduction to tribal guarachero in NL?!
T3tris

DJ TETRIS (mx | n.a.a.f.i., guaracha)
DJ Tetris, from the southern state of Oaxaca, has been a key part of the Mexican tribal guarachero scene for quite some time now. The origins of this particular style of dance music are from Monterrey and is characterized by the use of pre-hispanic rhythms, cumbia, and electronic beats, mixed with flute melodies, accordeon and synthesizers. With his signature style (a mix of tribal guarachero, Mexican fanfare, Mariachi en musica norteña Tetris quickly found a home with the N.A.A.F.I. collective (Lao, Siete Catorce, Mexican Jihad, Fausto Bahia). N.A.A.F.I. are famed for their special events and their unconventional ways of celebrating street/subculture. Tetris’ ultra-danceable ‘Costeño’ came out on N.A.A.F.I. in 2014.

DUCKFOOD (nl | rebel up!, pantropical)
Always on the search for new sounds from around the globe, Duckfood’s massive music collection absorbs anything from renaissance to Moroccan trance. His DJ selections are colourful and not hampered by any preoccupation about genre. Duckfood is connected to both Rebel Up! and Pantropical.

CHRISTIAN BAAS (nl | meanwhile in manolya, pantropical)
We threw him in the deep end with his maiden Pantropical set at the MDOU MOCTAR / ChupameElDedo double bill (14.07.16), but this young man unequivally impressed with his skilful set, that even ended up as a live jam with Mdou’s 2nd guitarist.

Fri 22 July > Rebel Up! @ Recyclart Holidays party w/ Mabiisi, DJ Tetris, Munchi & Godwonder

13432219_10153850951005345_225271404206347998_nAkwaaba! hello Brussels!

This Friday 22 July, a seriously amazing party at Recyclart Holidays festival which Rebel Up! helps organising.
A Special lineup with artists from various southern countries > Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mexico, Dominican Republic & exotic Belgium.

Mabiisi (GH/ BF)
Mabiisi means “brothers of the same mother” both Frafra of northern Ghana and in Mooré language of the Mossi people of central Burkina Faso. The association of rural and urban music from both cultures (Ghanaian kologo music and African hip hop) was the desire of the Burkinabe social critical rapper Art Melody, which has now been fulfilled. He went into the studio with famous Ghanaian kologospeler Stevo Atambire and the catchy result testifies to natural intuition and chemistry between these two experienced musicians. The Akwaaba Music label from Ghana released the record and arranged a first tour of this duo with steamy stop at Recyclart!

DJ Tetris (MX)
from Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca state, Tetris has been around for quite some time in the national Mexican ‘tribal Guarachero and electro tribal’ scene originated in the northern city of Monterrey and characterized by a mix of cumbia, pre-Columbian rhythms and electronic beats and melodies of flute, accordion, guitar and later, synthesizers. With his distinct style, which exercised a mix of tribal Guarachero and Mexican fanfare, mariachi and nortena, Tetris found shelter at the N.A.A.F.I collective and label (alongside Lao, Siete Catorce, Mexican Jihad, Fausto Bahia …) from the capital DF, famous for their special events and situations that celebrate street and club culture. Tetris’ eclectic and ultradanceable first album ‘Costeno’ came out on N.A.A.F.I in 2014.

Munchi & Godwonder (DO/NL)
From Mexico we fly through the US, over the Dominican Republic to Rotterdam and Amsterdam for two party creators and producers of big format: Munchi and Godwonder. Munchi harvested much success a few years ago with genre-defining productions and DJ sets in its own typical style, stairs, moombahton, reggaeton, cumbia and baile funk fusions to solid dancefloor bombs. At its peak, which brought him to Diplo and Azalea Banks whose money he turned down, as he retired disillusioned from “the music business” to continue working in silence to his mission: continue to make music and help other young people with musical talent from the Dutch-Caribbean diaspora to develop their musical talents. He founded his own label Selegna records and now releases steady new work of himself and of others, such as Godwonder, who for the occasion joined the ranks for the presentation of a Dominican-Dutch sound that mixes gabba and bubbling with tarraxo, reggaeton and dembow. Munchi will undoubtedly surprise you with a whole new set of dirty latino trap, hypnotic merengue, sensual bachata and heavy moombahton.

Fri 20 Nov > Rebel Up! LeBlanc @ Pantropical, WORM, Rotterdam w/ Oscilador Bass (MX), Sonido Martines (AR), No Munchi (NL/DO)+ live percussion

Pantropical: tropical party night in Rotterdam with cumbia, latin bass, & more!

12186443_509018452591411_9120844568833095647_o
On the back of our Pan-Afro futuristic October edition, we turn our focus on chunky Latin American sounds; Cumbia (vintage/nu, Chicha, Sonidera, Villera), Latin Bass, and a pinch of bachata and merengue.

OSCILADOR BASS (MX | latin bass mexico)
This friendly Cumbia-bot has housewives and washing machines alike obsessing over him all across Latin America. Now his mission is to make crowds in the rest of the world follow suit during its upcoming EU / Asia trek. Oscilador Bass is all about creating the hottest Latin Bass, expertly mixing güiro rasps, cowbells and congas with the best spatial sound, all assembled with mucho amor in Mexico!

SONIDO MARTINES (AR)
Sonido Martines is the Argentine figurehead of the South American cumbia scenes. In his dj mixes, Argentine and Colombian Cumbia meet vintage Vallenato and Chicha, and Dub hits upon electronic music. He is a tireless seeker of lost vinyl records and remixer of Cumbia classics, shaking up the dancefloors with a wide selection of tropical music from all over Latin America. His DJ sets feature a wide array of vintage psychedelic cumbia and other tropical beat music, almost doubling as history lessons.

LEBLANC (BE | Rebel Up! / Pantropical)
Last seen & heard in February deconstructing the dancefloor at Pantropical with Pinchado and DØG. LeBlanc is one of the most pleasantly obsessed and knowledgeable purveyors of Non-western, tropical music for the Benelux. Together with Rebel Up! / Nightshop’s Sebcat he’s the co-curator for many great tropical events in Brussels (Recyclart, Beursschouwburg, Les Ateliers Claus, Bonnefooi etc.), and co-hosts the Nightshop radioshow on Radio Campus. Despite the dizzying number of subgenres LeBlanc uses for his DJ mixes, they’re always focused and highly dancable. Tonight’s set will include digital cumbia, dancehall, reggaeton and other global bass.

NO MUNCHI (NL/DO)
Spins his fave vintage Dominican tunes, including Bachata, Merengue, and Palo; reverb and effect drenched, to make things a bit more compatible with the other sounds on offer on this night.

CHRIS BRUINING (NL) & NIQUE QUENTIN (DE) – live percussion
The DJ sets will be spiced up with skilful live percussion played by Rotterdam based percussionists Chris Bruining (Gallowstreet, La Banda Fantastica), and Nique Quentin (Los Paja Brava / Doktor Schnitt). Chris recently played live with Dick El Demasiado at Pantropical in September.

Wo 14 Oct PANTROPICAL x ‘Afrofuturism Now Festival’: DJ SPOKO & Rebel Up – Duckfood @ WORM

PANTROPICAL presents DJ SPOKO as part of WORM’s ‘Afrofuturism Now!’ festival.

■ DJ SPOKO (south africa)
Raised in the rural town of Tzaneen (northern South Africa), Spoko started producing at age 12. After moving to Atteridgeville (a 99%-black township outside the mostly white city of Pretoria) he lived in an area called Ghost Town, near Atteridgeville’s cemetery, where as the neighborhood’s premiere producer, young Spoko earned the nickname The Ghost. In the early 2000s DJ Spoko traveled south to Soweto, where he studied sound engineering in the studio of Nozinja, creator of the SHANGAAN ELECTRO style. After Spoko built his own studio back home, he took a producer named DJ MUJAVA under his wing, leading to Spoko’s great but uncredited triumph as the percussion mastermind behind Mujavas Bacardi House indebted “Township Funk.” Since the release of “Ghost Town” (his first official western release) Spoko has continued to develop his own Ghetto Boyz entertainment – working with local Atteridgeville talent.

Sat 12 Sept > PANTROPICAL > LA BANDA FANTASTICA (nl) + DJ BONI (ao/nl) + DUCKFOOD (nl)

Special open air showcase as part of the ‘Kunst in het Witte de Withkwartier’ festival. Zigzagging from the dense ‘Kunst in het Witte de Withkwartier’ program, you can hop straight into our corner stage area for a good Pantropical fix.

LA BANDA FANTASTICA • have top musicians from Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Rotterdam in their ranks. With Amsterdam as their main operations base, they quickly became the prime movers behind the great ‘Fantástica’ cumbia parties (currently ‘on hold’). Musically they know exactly how to throw a great party, mixing Latin-American classics with their own blend of various cumbia styles, such as the psychedelic guitar based Peruvian Chicha (or Cumbia Amazónica), Cumbia Villera, etc. The band performed at festivals like Fusion, Berlin.
la banda fantastica

DJ BONI • has been making a name for himself at quite some venues in and around the Angolan / Afro clubscene in Rotterdam. At a previous Pantropical last year November he held is own playing with the great Nigga Fox.

DJ Boni
DUCKFOOD • Pantropical / Rebel Up! resident DJ. One of Rotterdam’s most knowledgeable music omnivores. Will tie all sounds together in a way only he can.

Fri 13 Feb > Pantropical @ WORM Rotterdam w/ DJ Pinchado (AR), Rebel Up! LeBlanc & DØG (BR)

10959905_410038305822760_8429437161431509339_n

Ok, call it winter denial, but we won’t be shivering in our badly insulated homes. Dance with us n this friday the 13th to feverish cumbia, funk carioca, juke, afrotronics & other hot tropical global bass at this Pantropical party!

▨ DJ PINCHADO (argentina)
One of our favorite DJ’s from below the equator! Pinchado is a specialist excavator of the finest cumbia and other tropical gems from the vaults of half-molten record jungles across Latin America. He edits these into fun lo-fi mixes, either slowed down (rebajadas) or lovingly left intact to be spinned in clubs around the globe. Pinchado is closely tied to Holland’s own Dick El Demasiado, who released on Pinchado’s own Silbando Discos (next to the flamboyant Peruvian singer and hairdresser La Tigresa del Oriente).

▨ DJ LEBLANC (bruxelles | Rebel Up!, nightshop)
This man from is beyond a shadow of doubt one of the most pleasantly obsessed and knowledgeable purveyors of Non-western, tropical music for the Benelux. Together with Sebcat he’s the co-curator for many great tropical events in Bruxelles (Salle Rogier, Bonnefooi, Recyclart, etc.), and co-hosts the Nightshop radioshow for Radio Campus. Despite the sheer dizzying number of subgenre styles Leblanc uses for his unique DJ mixes, they’re always super focused, tight and highly dancable. Leblanc’s set will include digital cumbia, global bass & afrotronics.

▨ DØG (brazil)
DØG exists in multiple spaces simultaneously, raised in global suburbs, based in digital realms, sometimes visual other times musical. DØG divides his time between geeking out with A/V installations (as ‘ehCaetano’), and über-dancable DJ sessions as one of DØG’s multiple incarnations. This night he’ll serve up a high-octane mix of funk carioca, ghetto house, afro, and juke, with a pinch of tecnomelody and lambada. Heavy beats from the west suburbs of the planet.
