Thu 6 July > Rebel Up! @ Pantropical presents: Los Mirlos, WORM, Rotterdam

Hola!
this thursday, concert of famous Peruvian chicha cumbia band Los Mirlos in Rotterdam!!!

Pantropical is extremely proud to present the legendary Los Mirlos during their first ever European tour! Widely known as the masterminds of Peruvian-Amazonian Cumbia, Los Mirlos have recorded over 500 songs during their career. If you haven’t been living under a rock, chances are you have heard at least one of them, one way or another. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see this fantastic 8-piece live band led by founder Jorge Rodríguez Grández.

LOS MIRLOS (PE) – starts 21h15 !
Named after a black bird in their native jungle, Los Mirlos are the uncrowned kings of tropical Peruvian Cumbia, or Cumbia Amazonica. The band came together in Lima during the oil boom of the 70s and created a uniquely new and powerful party music inspired by the Anglophone psychedelic rock and surf music of the time. Fast-forward some 40 years, and Los Mirlos have travelled and performed in almost every Latin American country, and are still considered essential for the culture of Amazonian Cumbia, not in the last place because of popular compilations such as “Roots of Chicha”, “Back To Peru”, and “Cumbia Beat Vol. 1”. Songs like ‘La Danza de Los Mirlos’, ‘Sonido Amazónico’, ‘Lamento en la Selva’, ‘Muchachita del Oriente’, and ‘Chinito en Onda’ are kept in the memory of many people worldwide, who all danced to them at one point of their life.

DJ support by Rebel Up! SebCat & DJ Pinchado (AR), everything Peruvian from huayno folklore, selva, cumbia, guaracha & chicha cumbia!
Visuals by Jonathan Castro (PE).

Fri 30 June > Rebel Up @ Recyclart Holidays; Peruvian Night w/ Los Wemblers de Iquitos, Dengue Dengue Dengue, Shushupe & Cecilia Yzarra

This friday, heavy cumbia action at the start of Recyclart Holidays, a true Peruvian Night with almost a complete Peruvian lineup!  Tamos listo?

Chicha Amazonica & Peruvian bass!

Los Wemblers de Iquitos (PE)
The inventors of the Amazonian chicha cumbia, Los Wemblers are a group that started in the 70’s by a shoemaker/guitarist and his five sons in Iquitos, a city in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. This legendary group, especially rediscovered by Dengue Dengue Dengue, has just released a new EP in the spring and is exploring the Brussels bush. Selva-delic!

Dengue Dengue Dengue (PE)
The most psychedelic electronic duo of Lima, who behind their crazy masks and vibrant colorful visuals bring massive Peruvian electro bass! With a mix of digital future, cumbia, tropical bass, dancehall, chicha from the 70s, they are in constant motion and constantly release new sounds with influences allover. Expect a set bridging the gap between Latin America, Africa & the West. One thing is sure: they’ll fire up the Recyclart!

ShuShupe (PE)
The name of this female producer comes from one of the most venomous snakes in the Amazonian forest, makes its full sense on the dancefloor. She will inject toxic rhythms into your limbs and make the heat rise until you catch a tropical disease. Also she is part as activist of a growing LGTB scene and a woman on the forefront of the female Latin American electronic sound.

DJ’s SebCat & Cecilia Yzarra (Bxl/PE)
This Belgian & Peruvian duo will do the outdoor warmup with cumbia, chicha, boogaloo, guaracha, criolla and much more Vinyl only, with lots of vintage dusty discs. SebCat needs no introduction but Cecilia Yzarra is one of the few female dj’s from Peru, with an incredible selection of vintage vinyl.

Also, they explore new sounds created from traditional roots with a slightly digital edge. Hearty, lively rhythms and flood the crowd with a colorful wave of love, joy and Cumbia! Inspired by earthly ancestral trips, they show us a path, an idea and a project aimed at challenging the senses on all fronts, shooting out sounds explosively charged with good vibes, light and hope.

Thu 28 July; Rebel Up! @ Pantropical > DJ Tetris (MX), Duckfood & Chris Baas

First time ever introduction to tribal guarachero in NL?!
T3tris

DJ TETRIS (mx | n.a.a.f.i., guaracha)
DJ Tetris, from the southern state of Oaxaca, has been a key part of the Mexican tribal guarachero scene for quite some time now. The origins of this particular style of dance music are from Monterrey and is characterized by the use of pre-hispanic rhythms, cumbia, and electronic beats, mixed with flute melodies, accordeon and synthesizers. With his signature style (a mix of tribal guarachero, Mexican fanfare, Mariachi en musica norteña Tetris quickly found a home with the N.A.A.F.I. collective (Lao, Siete Catorce, Mexican Jihad, Fausto Bahia). N.A.A.F.I. are famed for their special events and their unconventional ways of celebrating street/subculture. Tetris’ ultra-danceable ‘Costeño’ came out on N.A.A.F.I. in 2014.

DUCKFOOD (nl | rebel up!, pantropical)
Always on the search for new sounds from around the globe, Duckfood’s massive music collection absorbs anything from renaissance to Moroccan trance. His DJ selections are colourful and not hampered by any preoccupation about genre. Duckfood is connected to both Rebel Up! and Pantropical.

CHRISTIAN BAAS (nl | meanwhile in manolya, pantropical)
We threw him in the deep end with his maiden Pantropical set at the MDOU MOCTAR / ChupameElDedo double bill (14.07.16), but this young man unequivally impressed with his skilful set, that even ended up as a live jam with Mdou’s 2nd guitarist.
