hey all, new release out by the Brazilian quintet Satanique Samba Trio, from the capital Brasilia.
For the fifteenth time, actually. After such an extensive carreer of Brazilian Rythm flasking, though, it is the first time they ramage through the Brazilian Northern traditions: in Cursed Brazilian Beats Vol. 1, they have a go at traditional styles such as the carimbó, the toada, the lambada and even the lesser-known guitarrada.
Out digitally or as 7inch limited edition single in cardboard artwork sleeve.
hey all! This thursday 20 march we organise a special Rebel Up Records label evening at the Ancienne Belgique club room in Bxl centre!
With 2 concerts, by Brazilian group Satanique Samba Trio to celebrate their new release on 21.03 on the start of their European tour, and a warmup show by Brussels duo Trance Plantations. DJ support by SebCat & Drache MuMu.
Satanique Samba Trio is an instrumental avant-garde quintet (yep, not really a trio), founded in 2003 with the sole purpose to be an idiosyncratic force on the Brazilian musical landscape. No Brazilian traditional rhythm remains unscathed on Satanique Samba Trio’s trail of desecration. From samba to forró, from bossa nova to lambada and carimbó, this Brasília-based quintet (sometimes sextet) has been adding virulence, dissonance and provocation to Brazil’s musical heritage. Their efforts on deconstructing Brazilian music’s most persistent clichés have resulted in 15 records so far. After a (post-)covid hiatus, they finally hit Europe again to promote their upcoming 7-inch vinyl .‘Cursed Brazilian Beats Vol. 1’, to be released on the Brussels label Rebel Up! Records. The 7inch will be available at the show!
And afterwards we do a Rebel Up x ECHT! afterparty @ Bonnefooi bar, as ECHT! also plays their new album release concert in the big room of the Ancienne Belgique. Expect a full lineup with underground electronic & global sounds by SebCat, Papelón Kifesh, Moon Yé and DJ Erd.
Saturday 8 Feb > Rebel Up Soundclash! present: FARIDA AMADOU& FRIENDS (ex-Cocaine Piss) | SPIRITCZUALIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER (Akuphone) | REBEL UP! DJ’S OCCII do-it-yourself mysticism | musical ritualism | €8 in before 22:00 / €10 after! No presale,
FARIDA AMADOU& Friends (BE, ex-Cocaine Piss) Farida Amadou is a Liège, Belgium based bass player, most well known for being part of the punk band Cocaine Piss and for her free improv sets with Steve Noble. Since 2014, she has performed with many musicians all over Europe, including Linda Sharrock, Balasz Pandi, Jasper Stadhouders, Peter Brötzmann, Mette Rasmussen and Thurston Moore, TONiGHTS FRiENDS Include; Terrie Hessels (The Ex) on Guitar & Frank Rosaly (US) on Drums. Listen here and here.
SPIRITCZUALIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER (Akuphone) Giving birth via impromptu instrumentals to glimpses of synchronistic magic, these Spiritczualics remain agnostic: are they magicians, or merely charlatans? Spiritczualic Enhancement Center is an outernational movement. A traveling nexus collecting dozens of participants to explore alchemical realms of sonic ritualism. Fusing DIY electronics with experimental improvisation and traditional instruments, recurring collaborators have studied under masters of Andalusian music, ethno-music research as well as important underground venues in Berlin and Hamburg’s musical scenes. Visual artist Dima Rabik contributes his miniature ink drawing style to all Spiritczualic releases – as well as a live-drawing projection during performances.
Spiritczualic (“cz” borrowed from the Polish / tʂ / hard “tch”) – a word-melange of “ritczualic” and spiritual, reflects upon the ancient practice of musical ritualism. As an idea, it greatly predates the physical occurrence of the Enhancement Center – on Christmas 2017, when an Ottoman building below the Gates of Jerusalem provided itself for a remarkable meeting. The trespassing people who happened to be there – admittingly bizarre participants synchronized by state-of-mind rather than tune or scale – began exploring sonic sessions of do-it-yourself mysticism. Witnesses of its ritualistic gatherings have indeed reported moments of divination – and possibly sorcery. This raises the question, will the audience once again behold the allurement of Higher Sources – or rather testify to trickery.“ Listen here and here.
Rebel Up DJ’s Before, inbetween & after, DJ’s Duckfood & Spliff will take you on a trip through the global underground
They are not satanic, they just make God cry. They don’t play samba, they decompose samba. They are not a trio, they are a quintet. So definitely, they are Satanique Samba Trio! Imagine Tom Zé without vocals!! Or Captain Beefheart in a Brazilian mood!!!
SATANIC SAMBA TRIOwas founded in 2002 with the sole purpose of posing as an idiosyncratic force on Brazilian Music landscape (hence, the reference to the word “Satan”, a derivation of the Hebrew expression shaitan, which in turn can be translated as “the adversary” or “stray”). Two years later, the quintet – not actually a trio – released their debut EP, MISANTROPICALIA.
In 2007, the band unearthed the critically acclaimed LP SANGROU, which led its way into Concerts on Brazilian Soil that also featured names as big as Tom Zé and Naná Vasconcelos. After a 3 year-long recording hiatus, as they toured around Brazil (big country, you know the drill), BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #2 was released with undeniable success. The “putrefaction trilogy” had just started: BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #1 from 2011 (yep, one year AFTER #2) and BAD TRIP SIMULATOR #3 (2013) would eventually follow the conceptual path of decay. By the earlier months of 2014, the band put together a digital compilation called BADTRIPTYCH (Far Out Recordings – UK) intended to lump up the “catchier” songs from the aforemented trilogy. Still in the wake of a creative spike, the quintet (remember: not a trio) released a 7-inch (45 RPM) vinyl record called MÓ BAD on 2015. Now they might be hitting your shores.
If you ever wanted to know how traditional brazilian music would sound if it went absolutely bonkers, Satanique Samba Trio is the fastest and coolest way find it out. http://www.sataniquesambatrio.com.br/

CINEMA SOLORIENS – 20th Anniversary Celebration with special guests, acts and multi sets of electro acoustic and electronic odyssey.
Since beginning this ambitious project 18 years ago with Marshall Allen, leader of The Sun Ra Arkestra, filmmaker/musician James Harrar sees Cinema Soloriens as a constantly evolving creative and spiritual learning center. It is a multi-media performance consisting of James Harrar’s experimental and highly personal film and video images with a live musical rendering of soundtracks for each film. The musical concepts are created, directed and performed by Harrar (tenor sax, flute, bulbul tarang, reeds, voice and effects) with Marshall Allen (alto sax, flute, keyboards, EVI and effects) and Rogier Smal (percussion and electronics) plus a stellar changing line-up of gifted musicians such as Anne Laberge, Yedo Gibson, Vasco Trilla and Arvind Ganga.
The project places attention on Artist collaboration, exploring the moving image with live performance and when combined, an attempt to reveal deeper levels of interpretation within Harrar’s visceral film poems. These presentations also celebrate the early beginnings of cinema, providing live music to support and elevate the silent movie experience. Any musical incarnation of Cinema Soloriens reveals a group possessing a penchant for psychedelic rock, outre ethnological improvisations and Marshall Allen approved jazzy stomps of which these performances deliver in equal measure.
LINE UP:
set 01 trio : James Harrar – tenor, ethnic reeds, EVI, voice and electronics Marshall Allen – alto, flute, EVI, keyboard and effects Rogier Smal – Drums, percussion.
set 02 big band : James Harrar – tenor, ethnic reeds, EVI, voice and electronics Marshall Allen – alto, flute, EVI, keyboard and effects Rogier Smal – drums, percussion. Anne Laberge. flutes. Yedo Gibson. saxophones. Vasco Trilla. drums. Arvind Ganga guitar.
Sublime Frequencies in North and West Africa: The films of Hisham Mayet

Vodoun Gods on the Slave Coast
A Film By Hisham Mayet
Sublime Frequencies – 50 minutes/2012
Hisham Mayet’s exploration of West African possession ceremonies continues in Benin. The cradle and birthplace of Voodoo, Benin was formerly known as the Slave Coast, and most of the slave industry was exported from its shores. Voodoo worship is integral to the every day lives of the people of Benin. This film, shot in 2010 during the country’s rich Vodoun celebrations, is an impressionistic lens on the myriad ceremonies that this rich and diverse culture has to offer. Showcasing intimate observations of a variety of Voodoo ceremonies: The cult of Sakpata (god of pestilence and healing), Egoun dramas shrouded in magisterial costumes and the secret police of the Zangbeto nightwatchmen, among other highlights. This will be the premiere screening of this visual feast.
Mayet will be premiering this brand new film as well as discussing his methodology and that of Sublime Frequencies, a label he founded with Alan and Richard Bishop in 2003. Highlights will include stories of his experiences with the now legendary clutch of Saharan guitar groups (Group Doueh, Bombino, Inerane) he came upon in the region, as well as sharing his many adventures travelling and documenting possession ceremonies in the Sahel for the last 10 years.
Followed by the AFTERPARTY with Rebel Up! Soundclash dj’s + Hisham Mayet for a rough exploration into global lo-fi rock and pop, unheard ethnographics and exotic dance sounds and other special outerworldly sounds.
