Thu 9 Feb > Rebel Up! @ Fumaça Preta & Yôkaï, Les Ateliers Claus, Bxl

This thursday 9 Feb a special concert night @ Les Ateliers Claus.
Double concert for lovers of psychedelic tropicalia punk & afro jazz

Fumaça Preta: An psychedelic tropicalia noise fuzz rock quartet via Venezuela, Brighton (UK) and Amsterdam. A Deep throat organ over fuzzy funk drumming, then passionate ranting in Portuguese – Pupilas Dilatadas lays out its stall right from the start: a mad love for 1960s Braziian psych rock stirred up with European humour. The wild harmonized guitar chords remain unleashed till four minutes in, and the track is an impressive mix of discipline and righteous craziness. “Toda Pessoa” is even better, a concise and coolly configured mesh of bass and guitar lines strutting towards a chorus whose dumbness verges on perfection. The music shifts easily from pomp rock riffs to lounge moments, with space echo and other FX splashed generously about. Espelhos Fundidos is a casually brilliant throwaway: a high bassline, cello and bass clarinet taking turns on melody, while waves of insane laughter and echo crash over the top. This is record collection rock, if you like, but from people with very special collections. It’s amazing that the whole steaming, tropical concoction has emerged from a tiny Amsterdam studio.

Yôkaï: is pure tribal jazz. They play groovy composition in the style of Ethio master Mulatu Astatke, but also with more quiet moments where Fred Becker exchanges his sax for the ney flute. All in all a pleasant and broody afro-ethio atmosphere. For Les Ateliers Claus they will perform a special set where they” work around tribal compostions.

Support by the Rebel Up! dj’s.
what Bonnefooi says about us: These guys are some of Brussels’ most underestimated Global Groove Dj’s, with a musical network from Rajasthan to New Yorkistan and a musical selection that goes even farther and deeper into tropicalism and obscure global dance music. Sebcat is also a fulltime musical nexus, the way he blends his global grooves together in a party he also re-arranges, feeds and stimulates musical culture: as a re-distributor of records (importing Sahel Sounds records of Sublime Frequencies), in writings and research (check his writings for Gonzo Circus or his compilation on Sublime Frequencies titled *Rajasthan Street Music*) or as a curator of countless parties and concerts. Leblanc is an experienced dj & collector for the more rougher contemporary street dance music from around & below the equator. Also a distributor of African field recording records, curator of global music documentaries and a darn great cook of global dishes. Whatever you will get from him, in sound or food, it will be filled with specials spices and hotness. Caliente!

Chicha cumbia is the Peruvian style of psychedelic cumbia originated in the Amazonian north and taken to the big cities, becoming famous allover the country and stil is! In those times, the chicha cumbia was looked down upon by many people (of higher so-called *sophisticated* classes), seeing it as music for the poor, the drunk, the criminals, the immigrants from the north or highlands. Indeed, it was the music of the poor labourers, those who lived & worked in shantytowns, music that sung about their hardships, giving them inspiration at the same time. All this makes for a wonderfull vintage style that possesses a special power through enchanting melodies, tremolo guitars and strong lyrics.

The biggest bands of that era were Los Destellos, Los Diablos Rojos, Los Mirlos, Los Shapis, Chacalón Y La Nueva Crema, Juaneco Y Su Combo, Los Wemblers de Iquitos and many more. If you like to get this music, we can highly recommend the excellent Roots of Chicha compilations on Brussels label Crammed Discs or the refined Cumbia Beat compilations on Vampisoul.
